  1. Santorum and Gingrich are very much selfish, they really seem less concerned with the welfare of their party (and the country) and much more concerned about their public profile. This always reminds me of the story of Richard Nixon in 1960. The election between him and Kennedy was extremely close, and many of his supporters wanted to challenge for a recount, but Nixon chose not to pursue it because he didn't want to come across as a sore loser. I believe this helped his image when he won in 1968. So this leads me to believe that Nixon, the only president to resign in disgrace, has more character than these guys Also Santorum is frightening, like super scary.
  2. I was surprised that all the news outlets were calling "John Carter" a bomb because it only pulled in 30 million on the first weekend. I know it was super costly to make, but that seems like a pretty great take for a new property with relatively unknown actors. Hopefully it will have staying power, though. I might get out to see it this weekend or next.
  3. I thought more about this soldier and I think they need to make this trial public. He still needs to be tried with a US military court, but I believe the Afghan people should be able to see it happen. Steps should be taken to make sure it is visible. There is still going to be some violence and problems as a result of this tragedy, but that help somewhat.
  4. Yep, that's what I have my problems with It's too bad NATO is so ineffective, the dream scenario is the US goes in, removes the Taliban, and then an international police force comes in to help establish a stable government built around basic human rights and no corruption.
  5. If the US just wanted to plop a few military bases down in Afghanistan for strategic means, they could have done so ages ago with a lot less manpower and resources committed. Instead they are trying to help Afghanistan establish a stable government with an effective military. I disagree often with the way the US is handling itself in Afghanistan, but don't lose sight of the fact the Taliban is one of the most vile groups in modern history, and handing back control of the government to them is a terrible idea.
  6. Boo, are you trying to imply this is about oil or something? That might be a good argument for the war in Iraq, but there is very little economic gain to be had in Afghanistan, it really was a war against terror that put us there. Back to this tragedy, do you folks think he should be tried by an Afghani court? I know this is a bit of a complicated area of the law, like when a diplomat commits murder. My feeling is he should face the Afghanistan court system. I could see him getting some protection from the US government if he got into a confrontation with someone and there was a death, but this lunatic killed children. He wasn't out on patrol in a warzone either, he went into these people's homes and murdered them. If he did this in Texas he would get a fast pass to the gas chamber.
  7. Ah, Jefe is boss, I should have known that.
  8. My Spanish is pretty bad, but I believe it is talking about education and humility, and how a guy named Jeff connected with the president by saying "Have a good day" But really I just like the idea of our president fist bumping all the custodians in the White House.
  9. This image made me smile. I haven't been a big supporter of the guy, but he does have style!
  10. Isn't that 8 hour sleep thing a myth? Maybe toddlers and kids needs it, but I'm fairly sure adults don't. Nope, for most stages of your life, 8 hours is the recommended amount of sleep. Obviously this varies based on a lot of factors, but that is the accepted standard. I'm 33 and I feel terrible if I don't get at least 7, but I also get interrupted at least once a night.
  11. The Spectre weapons look pretty sweet, plus a few do things that are rather unique. I like the explosive disc shooting pistol.
  12. While having a fun and rather reminiscent moment with Garrus and Wrex, it struck me how bizarre it would be to have one of them be dead in this game. Bioware really did pull off an amazing bit of choice and consequence here over a trilogy.
  13. It's funny because I have two videos I show about China in my class, and one says you can see the wall from space, while the other claims that is a myth. It's a good opportunity to teach my kids about not trusting sources, at least.
  14. I took it as a joke, Malc
  15. I didn't know where else to put this, put yesterday my students asked an astronaut he could see the Great Wall of China from space. He said he could if he looked really hard.
  16. I did that yesterday. Clean a room or something, the guilt will go away. Then you can triumphantly declare you stayed home to clean up and organize. Don't spend more than 20 minutes on it, though, no need to go overboard. That sounds similar to when I try to convince myself that masturbation is a form exercise and I cannot be out of shape, because I exercise regularly. That depends on if you stretch beforehand.

  18. I don't think I can even really comprehend what free time is anymore. Don't have kids, people. I'm just kidding, they are awesome and make life meaningful
  19. You only rem sleep for 20-30 mins, the rest of the time you might as well be dead. So being dead doesn't count towards your free time either? If you are getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep, then you are already spending 1/3 sleeping. So basically obykveven wants us all to have lives of leisure with no obligations or work time.
  20. Awesome pics Rosbjerg, I hope to visit Kyoto some day.
  21. But I thought laissez-faire capitalists hated regulations on the labour market such as worker's unions, minimum wage, and restrictions on shifts such as length and break requirements? The free market will sort it out, no need for regulation. There is a fine line here though. Obviously a business owner is going to want to keep costs down, and all of those things add to costs. So the government steps in and regulates to protect workers, or allows them to unionize. But there are all sorts of pitfalls here. Corruption in the government or the unions, rising overhead that forces businesses to close down, the inability for small businesses to compete... the list goes on and on.
  22. Isn't sleeping free time though?
  23. I don't pay any attention to the rank stuff in this game. I have no idea what my own rank means. There is a map that tells you where all the quest stuff is on the Citadel. I believe you hit the M button.
  24. fix ...and I can even push for change on many different levels of slavery... Today as always, men fall into two groups: slaves and free men. Whoever does not have two-thirds of his day for himself, is a slave, whatever he may be: a statesman, a businessman, an official, or a scholar. Does this include weekends and holidays? How did you work out the 2/3 number? Since I spend most of my non-work time taking care of my kids, does that make them slavemasters?
