Belgium, Hawaii to ban, regulate in-game loot boxes as gambling
It isn't that I think EA can regulate itself, it is that I am cautious of allowing the government to step in unless it is a legitimate health concern. Them being greedy and consumers being dumb enough to feed that greed is not grounds for Big Brother stepping in to sheild us. I also believe it is early and the market will correct itself.

The deciding factor in many multiplayer games isn't who is good, it is who has the most time to sink into it. I guess that is better than paying to be leet, but it still seems pretty silly. It is why I tend to stay away from the whole idea of competition in games. Plus I am old and slow. All of this matches up pretty well with the way the real world works.

Hmm...Kamala Harris is a pretty smart choice. I can't see the dem leadership being smart enough to choose her.

You did WHAT Today
I have some fancy dinner to go to tonight, but I needed to take my son to hockey first, so I go all dressed up. Now I look like a coach and prospects from the Kings and Ducks keep asking me questions. I guess they are in town for a tourney.

Tombstone would be on my list. There is a whole Western comedy genre, really.

Best movie by genre WESTERN/COWBOY
Can we put Deadwood on the list? I love most westerns, but Deadwood is probably my favorite thing to come out of the genre. I tried to watch Young Guns the other day. That movie did not age well.

You did WHAT Today
Key word there is "looks". Always ask people what benefit they get from marriage or a kid, but I just get vague crap so is hard to judge its merit I can be very specific about the benefit of marriage, but this is a family friendly forum. Financially I'd say it has been a boon for me, although that can vary pretty widely. Given that we make the same income though, it definitely helps to be able to combine our buying power. Also a friend of mine ended up with this crazy bloody nose situation where he passed out at home, and his wife called the paramedics and dealt with it. Maybe he wouldn't have died from it, but it is crazy to think what would have happened. I guess you can get that same benefit from a conscientious roommate though.

Memphis was easily one of the richest cities in terms of history that I have been to. Sun Studios and the Lorraine Motel are places that everyone should visit, and yet they haven't been over commercialized like so many important landmarks. Plus, the BBQ!

Movies You've Seen (or would like to see) Recently
I watched Kong: Skull Island. Man, that movie started off really well and just died. Considering they want to make a whole monster universe, why didn't they just slow the story down and do a trilogy? They just rushed through so much content that could have been great. I mean the whole tribal thing is basically a footnote.

I just hope they wrap some of this MCU stuff up before one of these guys gets hit with sexual harassment charges. That could derail the entire thing.

The Weird, Random and Interesting Things That Fit Nowhere Else Thread
The irony is the people want the "government" to help the homeless. This usually comes from the misguided notion that nothing ever happens except when the "government" does it. But instead of helping the homeless the government hurts them by shutting down the people who actually ARE helping them. And I might add, doing it in such a way that costs the tax payer nothing. I didn't read all the articles, but I assume it is because it messes up the neighborhoods. I mean, technically it will cost taxpayers money because you need more police in the area, and it can lower property values which can affect taxation as well. Obviously it's not a good excuse, since it just pushes the homeless to other areas, but I imagine the neighbors don't care as much about that. Heck, We have cities that give the homeless free train tickets to get them out to other towns here.

Belgium, Hawaii to ban, regulate in-game loot boxes as gambling
None of that has anything to do with gambling. Microtransactions and parents getting crazy bills have been a problem for years. I completely agree with it being a messed up business practice. I want disclaimers and complicated authorization procedures to make it easier for parents to avoid massive bills on their credit cards. I don't want to government banning stuff and calling it something that it isn't. That is a massive overstep. I do not see how this is any different than the decency laws drafted to protect children from violence in video games.

Belgium, Hawaii to ban, regulate in-game loot boxes as gambling
The fact you can't get any value out of it (outside of the game itself) would seem to make it less of a gamble. It is a product you are paying for. I've seen plenty of games that do tell you what will be in each box (one weapon, one mount, etc.) Are you telling me EA just needs to be more clear about what is in the boxes and it will no longer be worthy of government intervention? I'm not arguing that it isn't a terrible business practice. I'll sign petitions or whatever to pressure companies to pull back on this stuff. But I have a big problem with the government labeling it as something it really isn't so they can police it.
