  1. I have a lot of Mandarin speakers in my classes, and at the end of the year I would often show a couple episodes of Firefly. They would roll on the floor laughing at how bad the pronunciations were.
  2. One positive thing I've seen is the NRA has come out in favor of restricting bump stocks. I've been very critical of their handling of these events in the past, but it is encouraging to see them enter the discussion in such a way.
  3. So how about that Cam Newton? Classy guy.
  4. I was uncomfortable hitting the like button on that, but it was a very interesting read. People seem to ignore the mental health problems we have in this country in favor of arguing about guns and politics.
  5. I've been watching the Rockies game, and my dog decided to bring me a baseball. He has never done that before, and oddly enough the ball was one my daughter got at a Rockies game a year ago. Spooky, it's like he knew they were trying to rally. One more inning to get back in it for them.
  6. This Colorado-Arizona game just got interesting.
  7. I've been to Lafitte's in New Orleans. It was pretty neat, although comes across a bit like a theme bar.
  8. North by Northwest is worth seeing though. It holds up.
  9. I am very surprised they did not take the plates out a year after surgery. I had a rod in my leg when I broke it and they took it out as soon as the bones healed.
  10. I agree about stand alone expansions being vastly superior.
  11. We aren't exactly close to abolishing the 2nd Amendment, so everyone can relax about their guns. As I said, if Sandy Hook didn't result in any dramatic changes in gun control laws, this is not going to do anything either. That being said, having a gun would have been fairly useless in this scenario. You aren't going to take out a guy on the 32nd floor with a pistol. It would be terribly reckless to even try. So what about the cake decorator case. Is cake decoration an example of art?
  12. The light is on but nobody is home. He is off life support, so just a matter of time.
  13. Aren't we? Sadly most of us have had these conversations before. I'm guessing the missile through the hotel window option is frowned on by the hotel industry.
  14. I can tell you our school response system is thorough and has evolved over the years. It is also important to note that Sandy Hook, while terribly tragic, had the potential to be much worse if teachers had not followed the procedures in place. You aren't going to be able to stop this stuff from happening, but hopefully you can limit damage. Also we are bombarded by this stuff when it happens, but the odds of being involved in something like this are still extremely small.
  15. I can see decent hotel chains implementing a bag scanning system. That doesn't seems too crazy.
  16. If we didn't push through any gun control after Sandy Hook, when small children were gunned down with a legal weapon, I don't see how we push anything through for this. In that I can see where KP is coming from.
  17. Airports are pretty different after 9/11, schools have implemented changes since Columbine. I'd guess clubs have changed as well since Orlando. There is obviously a limit, and as a lone gunman it is nearly impossible to really stop when it comes down to it. I'm not sure what kind of response KP is looking for though.
  18. Would KP's post qualify him as an Edgelord? I'm not really hip on these internet labels.
  19. no its not, there are tons of buildings overlooking a large concert venue, what is so special about hotels in that regard? You can purchase a hotel room and carry up a number of heavy bags to said room. What other buildings allow you to do that? Also I am not sure how many tall buildings look down on open concert venues, I would not guess there are that many. In Vegas literally every tall building is a hotel.
  20. Because it happened in a hotel overlooking a large concert venue? That seems like a dumb question.
  21. I think we are getting caught up in the details of the gun, when that seems a bit like a dead end. Whether it was illegal or not, modified, etc. is going to mean very little because you will have one side crying out for gun control and the other (NRA) side shutting down any notion of that sort. It will get us nowhere, and I see it as pointless. Besides, is it really any better if he has to fire slower? The guy was in an elevated position and there was no simple way to get to him. I'm more interested in what hotels will be changing and how will large concert venues handle security differently. Bag checks? Cameras in the rooms? Metal detectors?
  22. Oddly enough, Vegas has been making a huge push to set up cement barriers to protect pedestrians from vehicles.
  23. Regardless of the weapon, this is going to fundamentally change the way we check in to hotels. Other than that I'm pretty much at a loss. Are we going to have snipers set up at all major events from now on?
