The Deadfire Scavenger Codes - WE FOUND THEM ALL - Cutthroat Cosmo! - Bonus Pets!
injurai replied to Ethics Gradient's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)I just went with the totally obscured numbers. Any reading on that die will be somewhat arbitrary. Though reading off the top might be the best assumption for a bunch of nerds. I went with what was most directed towards the camera, seeing the die as a clue prop.

Is there a map of Deadfire Archipelago?
injurai replied to Mazisky's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Much to the south, so probably not in the game, because the size of Deadfire is just too enormous. No? I though we were gonna meet Sagani in Deadfire somewhere? I'm pretty sure Josh suggested we may run into old party members, but didn't mention who. Sagani keeps being assumed or mentioned to be returning. I'd like to see a source if she actually is returning, but I'd imagine they'd prefer it to be a surprise. edit: I'm also certain they have said Naasitaq won't be in the game at all, regardless who many be returning.

The Deadfire Scavenger Codes - WE FOUND THEM ALL - Cutthroat Cosmo! - Bonus Pets!
injurai replied to Ethics Gradient's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)The d20 in post 215 Now that Obsidian is giving clues beyond the codes, let them be warned about letting detritus creep in. A clear view of something like that will not be ignored, nor should it. Which is why I think it probably means something, but who really knows...

Politics Princess' Sweet Sixteen
Alright BruceVC, what are the deets about this "dekulakization" going down in South Africa? I'm hearing both reports of parliamentary land reform by fiat, but also populist mobs forcing people off their land. I've read some of these reforms are over-due resolutions, I've also seen it re-framed as the buddings of a genocide against whites. Clearly a lot of biased reporters have a dog in this race, so it's hard to really get a good picture. I honestly don't know much about S.Africa's political climate, and nor do I think many of the people reporting due. The most interesting parallel I've seen drawn is against Rhodesia/Zimbabwe but the analogy doesn't yet seem perfect. A collapsing of the agricultural sector does seem like it's at risk however.

The Deadfire Scavenger Codes - WE FOUND THEM ALL - Cutthroat Cosmo! - Bonus Pets!
injurai replied to Ethics Gradient's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)A part of me is still partial to the idea Obsidian is just pulling a benevolent pr stunt or giving out they're excess humble-bundle codes. But getting media partners involved in that seems to kill that theory. Why not just stick to twitter codes. It seems to me maybe they are generating some encryption scheme in order to make the codes match up with gog codes just as an extra fun throw in. Which makes me think the codes form a Vernam cipher, because you could concoct some encryption scheme to plan what the cipher codes are, and thus allowing them to serve that dual purpose of hidden message / gog codes.

The Death of System Shock - how Nightdive's SS1 remake Kickstarter imploded
There should have just been two different products, I don't understand the sense in back-tracking. Plus System Shock 3 was around the corner. Albeit a different dev, but the same publisher. You'd think releasing a redux of the first game would help garner interest in the series again. Instead they took the worst of all options.

DOOM, OpenGL and Vulkan...
Games render with massive parallelism, and OpenGL is a GPU API graphics library o that allows programmers to write rendering code that target's GPU architecture. OpenCL can be used for example to write more generic non-graphics code that targets GPUs. OpenGL's history is fascinating but to suffice to say. It's the produce of a budding and growing industry and the library is the result of trying to keep pace with rapidly evolving proprietary technology, and numerous other attempts to make improved standards. After many cluster****s and corporate nightmares, OpenGL was able to become something quite respectable, even if a somewhat fractured and warted standard. It's perfectly fine to write in, but going forward it's in less of a position to really take advantage of the newest architectures. Vulkan is a fresh start that reevaluates how graphics libraries should be designed for modern GPU architecture. It forgoes a lot of backwards compatibility with cards that have no business seeing a flow of electrons. It has a huge advantage of hind-sight with respect to best practices. It's also lower-level to some extent, meaning it offers a more granular set of primitives that can be composed to fine tune rendering code to the implementors desire. Meaning it's a bit more laborious to work with, but the shader implementor will be able to better map rendering algorithms to the underlying hardware, and will be better able to make performance trade offs. OpenGL is certainly less suited for the future of graphics code, but I also think part of the performance disparity has to due with Vulkan better targeting new hardware and simply being more worthy of the coders time when it comes to performance tuning.

The Political Quinceañera Thread
Gotcha, this article is a fascinating read. I really owe it to myself to read more into the history of the Reagan era, it seems to be quite the precipice to our modern times.

Not surprised by indictments, but I had no idea there were convictions or even prison sentences against presidents. What exactly are the sentences for? They clearly don't serve them.

Or maybe the height of guilt. It would be hilarious though if it was just the result of a megalomaniac finally getting a big button.
