Better without stronghold?
Katarack21 replied to halfoat's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You can add them to your library now, manually. I think it would be nice to have a mechanic where the game tracked that and had it influence the lore bonus in Brighthollow. -
I'm using a custom might/con/resolve barbarian as the off-tank in my party, with my MC a cipher and the rest premade companions (Eder, Aloth, Durance, Grieving Mother). The barbarian in question does pretty decent single-target damage with a big two-hander, can take a lot of damage when in heavy armor because of her high resolve and endurance, and works pretty well as the off-tank in the group. I'm thinking about making something similar for my PC on a playthrough some time.

There's a cipher ability whose name I can't remember right now...basically you target an ally, and it deals pierce damage to an enemy that is engaged with that ally and pushes the enemy back. It's really excellent for those occassions where an enemy starts wailing on your rogue--it pushes the guy off and deals it damage, and proves time for your your fighter to use into the fray and force engagement so your rogue can safely wale on it's backside.

Better without stronghold?

The curio shop and the botanical gardens are worth it as a source of otherwise rare enchanting ingrediants, I think. And the warden for bounties. Brighthollow to rest, and the merchant to buy campfire supplies--for clearing the Endless Paths with. Other than that, it's no good. -
Why don't you type down, now, all the conditions in PoE and their effects? You do realize that this is the Internet, on a forum, with access to google and Wikipedia, and you have given no time limit of any sort on my response? Regardless, my point was not that I have everything about PoE memorized. My point is that just because you suck at manipulating and understanding the combat mechanic does not mean it's over engineered. It's there if you want to take advantage if it; if you don't have the intelligence, attention span, or motivation then you don't have to. Ok look. the combat is not a problem here. I may not like it 100%, its a matter of taste. I will grow fond of it. Doesnt matter. Balance and bugs are problems. non-issues like Firedorn memorial certainly are not. Do you get my drift? They aren't assigning priorities as they should. EDIT: And combat in PoE *is* over-engineered. No one said that's a bad thing. Its rather a matter of taste. For example I love getting hemorrhoids while playing Temple of Elemental Evil and Wizardry 8. If you played ToEE you probably got hemmorrhoids when it uninstalled your system files like it did to me. **** that game. **** it right in it's Windows-uninstalling face. Look, about the backer poem thing...I don't care. I didn't care about the poem, I didn't care about the twitter message, I didn't care about the controversy, and I don't care about the debate now. I don't care. At all. The bugs are a problem--the actual software bugs, glitched maps and whatnot. A patch has already been put out, and a hotfix to fix an issue with the patch. Another patch is being worked on now. Combat in PoE isn't perfect, but is very good. It's extremely fun, and exactly as deep and complex as you want it to be.

What? You mean *you* can't memorize. The system isn't that complex and is really only there if you want to go that deep. Using and manipulating that knowledge (along with the various buffs, debuffs, damage types, etc.) will make the game easier but isn't needed to play or to win. It's the very definition of optional depth. Reading that line comes across as you complaining because you can't understand it and therefore expect that nobody else can, either.

I'm enjoying the combat system in PoE *much* more than I did in the IE games. Infinity Engine combat was always very difficult for me; partly because there was no actual way to force your tanks to hold an enemy and I generally played a mage or sorcerer, and partly I think because I'm just not a very strategic or practical person. But I've been playing PoE on normal difficulty with a cipher, and the combat is the perfect degree of difficulty for me--challenging, with some fights requiring repeated efforts, but not so much that it seems impossible and with a great feeling of accomplishment and reward after I succeed. Even the easy fights sometimes feel like they could go wrong if I'm not careful, and even the hard fights feel easy when I get exactly the right tactics and set ups. I like the combat in this game a *lot*.

I agree that I would like to set more than one trap, and that the discrepancy between traps that hit me and the traps I set is crazy. However, I would like to point out that you *can* combine seals and traps. You can set a seal at a chokepoint, then set a trap directly behind it...or even inside it. A noxious burst trap ontop of a knockdown seal in combo with a wall of fire and an AoE paralyze is a nasty combination.

I have a custom barbarian with might/con/resolve (low intelligence, imagine that) that I use for my main off tank. I imagine it would be more difficult if I was using her as my main--honestly she doesn't get to do much in most fights. She rages and she hits things and she takes hits, that's about it.

If you pay attention to the bestiary and exploit the damage types properly, exploit choke points, use the right weapons, use traps and scrolls, and make creative use of various connecting-ray spells you can go quite long and far without ever having to rest. Especially since I'm a cipher and I use grieving mother--ciphers never worry about resting. It's never really been an issue for me.

Your RPG system sucks!

Fog of War Options, Please?
Katarack21 replied to Asmodean-'s topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The grey fog is to indicate that you've been there but aren't currently within sight of that location. So you know that tree is there but can't see if there is an enemy there. It's meant for Obsidian to use for strategic and tactical enemy placement. -

I"ll get the curio shop and the botanical gardens, and the warden. Screw the rest of it. -

...what? Well, that was a lot of utterly pointless upgrading I just did. I know, right? I felt exactly the same way. It's basically worthless. I thought the whole point of that was to end up with a really great stat bonus that cost you a lot. Not a whole bunch of pointless low-level crap. -
Is my country the only one with condoms, pill, morning after pill and Sperm Banks? Do you people reproduce asexually? Because unless you're spliced with frog DNA, people have to have sex to reproduce unless they pay large amounts of money to use high technology--which isn't available to everybody for obvious reasons. The vast majority of human beings are the product of sexual intercourse, man. And yet not all sexual intercourse ends in pregnancy, in fact I dare say MOST sexual intercourse going around all over the world doesn't end in pregnancy. So no, saying "I saw their birthrates so I know how much they hump each other" is an infantile facetious statement. So is saying that sexual intercourse and birth rates aren't related to each other at all. It's not a direct 1:1 deal do to the vagaries of technology and biology, but one does directly effect the other.
