  1. Bad luck - the 4800 is so much better than the 5200. The FX line was never great - the 5200, 5500, 5600 and 5800 really didn't deliver what they promised. For example the 5200, 5500 and 5600 boast pixel shader 2.0 support but physically can't deliver the perfomance needed to run it. The 5700 (non le) and 5900 are good cards though and the 6 series rocks...
  2. A lot of agp cards are keyed so they will only work in certain agp slots. For instance a 6800 (agp 8x) will also work in an agp 2.0 slot (4x) but not agp 1.0 (2x) as it physically won't fit. Different agp revolutions are different voltages, which can also affect compatibility. Always check which version the card and your motherboard support before buying.
  3. It really depends on your soundcard. Creative cards like the Live 5.1, Audigy and Audugy 2 all have hardware support for eax so there should be little or no performance hit. Other cards like the Live 24bit and Audigy LS (and all the onboard soundcards) process eax in software mode, which really does kill performance.
  4. I dont want to sound offensive. But the game industry is very much a business, with an agreed-upon business plan and deadlines of when the game goes alpha, beta, final etc. What even makes u think obsidian didnt know the time lines and were rushed by lucas arts? Both parties knew the timeline, both parties agreed upon it. You would be really stretching it to say it's LA's fault. Obsidian isnt clueless, they are an experienced developer that knows how long projects needs to be done. They are at equal fault with LA. obsidian should have said they need more programmers or designers. They didnt. They share equal responsibility. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I haven't seen the contract, and I'm sure you haven't either, so we have no way of knowing what the agreed deadlines or conditions were. At the end of the day, it's up to LucasArts to say whether or not they are satisfied with the finished product. Clearly they were or they wouldn't have released it. Going by all the confusion with release dates, and remember the original release date was February, rather than December, I get the impression that dates were brought forwards. That's fine if you can get a patch out on release to correct any immediate issues, but fans have been let down by both parties here - quite simply the game is unplayable for a lot of people and there is no rush to fix it.
  5. Sorry mate - you're pretty much out of luck. Very few people have managed to get the game running with the graphics chip (remember it isn't officially supported by the game). You could head over to the intel website and try the latest drivers there (or work through older ones, some people have got lucky that way). I'd strongly recommned upgrading your graphics card if you're running a desktop system.
  6. Right - I've added the line but near as I can tell it hasn't changed anything. I can only assume that the features are enabled by default. I had a look through the .ini for KOTOR and found the emitters line there though... The interesting thing is that in KOTOR2 I can force 1280x768 through the ini file, but when I try that in KOTOR it just defaults to 800x600 (looks like they did more to the engine than it seems).
  7. I really still rate BG2 - the devs paid far more attention to the story back in the olden days... Neverwinter Nights is another good one (the original wasn't great but the expansions are much better). Anyone had any thoughts about Bard's Tale, whenever that's coming out?
  8. Thanks for the clarification. I'm running an Nvidia card btw.
  9. Excellent guide, as usual. Quick quetsion though. I don't have an entry for emitters in my ini. Would inserting emitters=1 enable the effects or disable them, and are they already enabled? Cheers.
  10. Trust me, it's there. Go to www.nvidia.com Click on "Downoload Drivers". Click "Graphics Driver". Click "GeForce and TNT2". Click "Windows XP/2000". Click "go". Click "primary download site". Now follow my earlier instructions to get the new driver set up.
  11. Head over to Guru3d and have a look through the older drivers in their downloads section (would suggest maybe 61.77 or 56.72). Newer drivers are opitimised for newer cards, and the mx440 is the oldest nvidia card still on general release, so you may well have more luck with something older (like other people seem to be running). Good luck!
  12. Looks like you're running a laptop, so you can't upgrade your video card. The latest ATi drivers should have opengl 1.4 at least. What ever you do, you aren't going to be able to run the game until you get a bit more moemory in there. To install the new drivers: Download Driver Cleaner Pro and the latest drivers for your card (official ATI or Omega). Next, install Driver Cleaner Pro, but don't run the program. Now: 1. Uninstall your current driver. 2. Reboot into safemode. 3. Press cancel if it asks if you want to connect to the net to download a driver 4. Run Driver Cleaner Pro a. from the tools menu, select Cab Cleaner and then start. b. when that's run, from the main screen select only ATI then press start. c. when that's done reboot normally 5. Cancel when Windows prompts for a driver. 6. Install the driver you just downloaded.
  13. *Bangs head against wall* Please can the mods make a special whinging forum? I know you have something to get of your chest but this is technical support forum.
  14. Yeah a virus and spyware scan is deffinately in order! I assume you've reinstalled it... Do tyou have another cd drive you could try? Are you running any virtual cd drives - if you are, disable them.
  15. Reload an earlier game... Maybe try disabling movies. A bit more info would be helpful. Post back with your PC specs and driver versions.
  16. Is this perhaps an argument for the introduction of the Euro in UK... I think Dell's Dollar and Euro prices are nearly the same. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If I thought that would actually happen that would be great...
  17. If it was anything but a Dell I'd say upgrade. Sadly Dells are really hit and miss on the hardware side. I'd build a new one. It's not that difficult.
  18. 71.84 seems to be the only version for every OS. What are you running? Here's a link to the WIndows XP driver.
  19. Check the disks are clean as well. If you can, try it another machine, it might not like your cd drive.
  20. I don't think it's about better graphics, it's about different graphics. Graphically the KOTOR engine is limited. Vampire Bloodlines used the source engine and, technical bugs aside, was an entertaining game. Personally my pet rate with RPGs is that the standard of graqphics has deteriorated since they went 3d - the standard of art really took a nose dive.
  21. I just looked at the dell site, and you do realise that it doesn't come with a 6800 by default? I'd say go for it if you change the config. It needs at least another 256megs of memory in there and could do with a faster processor. As an alternative, look at HP. IMHO they're a much better brand than Dell. They're also a fair bit cheaper at the high end.
  22. Alienware laptops are about as highend as you can get, though they really are pricey. Sounds like that Dell should be excellent value for money (I'm quite jealous actually, it's about twice as expensive in the UK).
  23. Sorry mate, but you're not going to find a magic fix posted here. Anything worth doing is in the guide I linked you to. Beyond that if you want a quick perfromance boost you'll have to pay for it.
  24. OK - I'm not sure how you installed the drivers, but as you're a noob I'll walk you through it. First off, download Driver Cleaner Pro and the latest drivers (there's been a recent update, 71.84 are the newest. I'm not sure if you have them or the last driver). Next, install Driver Cleaner Pro, but don't run the program. Now: 1. Uninstall your current driver. 2. Reboot into safemode. 3. Press cancel if it asks if you want to connect to the net to download a driver 4. Run Driver Cleaner Pro a. from the tools menu, select Cab Cleaner and then start. b. when that's run, from the main screen select only Nvidia then press start. c. when that's done reboot normally 5. Cancel when Windows prompts for a driver. 6. Install the driver you just downloaded.
  25. And you believe them? Maybe they've got it, maybe they haven't - there's no way we can confirm it. I find the notion of them bother to do Q&A on the patch rediculous. They can only have tested the game on the most generic system in the 1st place, so why start now?
