PC version: why performance so poor?
adrich81 replied to PinkJedi's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
They can go a bit OTT on graphics in some RPGs. My favourite RPG has to be Baldur's Gate 2 - the graphics are really dated but it's an excellent story. Despite what other people on the boards say, I actually think the story in Sith Lords is more original than in KOTOR 1 (albeit about as predictable). -
Clean your cd, uninstall any virtual drives and try again. Failing that dump the contents of all the cds to your hard drive and run setup from there.

You're a bit limited as far as options go, but seeing as it's a Dell there are a few things you could do to boost performance in Windows. Have a look at the guide here It is probably the most definive guide for tweaking windows (it's a lot of reading, but the only way to get any real gain out of tweaking is to put time into it). Also grab a copy of the latest driver at TweaksRUs ( http://www.tweaksrus.com/ ) The site has been up and down lately, but the drivers are really worth getting (install the nv3x / GeofrceFX drivers. If you want a real performance boost in games I strongly recommend getting a new graphics cad (either a Geforce 6200 or a Radeon 9600 (not the se) ). You can game on a Dell or HP system - my current system started out life as an HP (admittedly the only original components are the motherboard and one of the hard drives).

Don't worry - that's not artefacting (that would be massive texture corruption or white patches on your screen). What video card are you running, and which driver do you have installed?
-
Have you taken your game back yet?
adrich81 replied to Xavier97x2's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
No, I haven't taken mine back and I don't intend to either! (Is it me or is this forum suffering from a massive overdose of Counter-Strike Forum syndrome?) -
In all honesty I skip them anyway - the quality's that crappy!
-
Exactly - Obsidian are doing their job under LucasArts' constraints. This means if LA want a rushed game, they get one. Obsidian doesn't make the decisions about when or in what state the game or a patch is released, LA do. I personally will most likely hold off buying any LucasArts game in future for at least a couple of months until I see what state it's in. I'd be far less dubious about buying another Obsidian game. @Battlewookiee - that's exactly what happened with Vampire Bloodlines, when Acitivision decided that the best policy was to deny anything was wrong with the game and blame it on people running underspec systems (please - does my system look underspec?)
-
Also empty your temp folders, and browse through anything that seems to have a random folder name. With a drive that size you won't have any space porblems, so copying the cds to your hard drive should solve the issues. There are a number of freeware junk file cleaners that should let you work out where the missing space has gone.

kotor 2 + new laptop = playable?
adrich81 replied to stop_him's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
How much will that set you back? You should really check out Alienware laptops. They really own (I don't think even the people who've posted here will try to make that hey can't run games)! -
Here's mine (last save is just before the last battle) [Movies Shown] Movie10=0 Movie 9=0 Movie 8=0 Movie 7=19 Movie 6=191 Movie 5=222 Movie 4=248 Movie 3=255 Movie 2=255 Movie 1=254 Movie 0=224 I guess you just set it according to which ones you've seen.

Check under c:\program files\lucasarts\swkotor2 that's the default install directory. To solve the bug, disable all antivirus software, virtual cd drives and and cd burning software running is you taskbar. Failing that (if you can make the space) copy the contents of each cd to a folder on your hard drive and run the install file from there.
-
The only way that extra stuff will come in is if people mod it. There's more than enough real issues for them to deal with in this patch (and probably the next one) as it is without adding more content. Do we even know how far this material was developed? If it's coded they might just do it, but I don't seem them putting any more than minimal effort into it (though I do remember that bonus content was added to the Icewind Dale expansion after fans complained it was too thin on the ground).

I've not noticed anything like that. Post some pics when you get a chance. What video card and drivers are you running?

Maximization problem with window
adrich81 replied to Landale's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Sounds like your install is screwed. The .ini file contains all the config settings for the game, so there is no way it does nothing on your system. Dialog.tlk is in the SWKOTOR2 directory by default. -
PC version: why performance so poor?
adrich81 replied to PinkJedi's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Which is really wierd 'cause the engine seem to be more or less unchanged. -
It is quite sloppy as ports go. Particularly things like refresh rates, and movies @640x480 (I mean WTF!), not to mention the sound qualtiy. In all fairness though, I think that's down to LA's time constraints.
-
(Or you could buy an lcd monitor )
-
Can't help you with the ATI drivers... (If they're the latest, try an older set). What soundcard are you running. They seem to be the root of all evil as far as this game is concerned.
-
It's possible, but not certain. You could also disable sound in the config program as well. Can you post your system specs (and driver versions if you know them)?
-
If you're feeling bored you could always experiment with older driver versions. You may get lucky.
-
In the swkotor2.ini change Disable Movies=0 to Disable Movies=1, or just select disable movies in the config program.
-
Try disabling sound, replaying from an earlioer save and reinstalling the game before you bother with a reformat.

kotor 2 + new laptop = playable?
adrich81 replied to stop_him's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Got with the mobile 9700 rather than the 9200 (even the desktop version of the 9200 is terrible, whereas the the 9700 is more than adequate). If you're planning on gaming with the laptop you'll really appreciate the better card. Games are not unplayable on a laptop. -
Disable moives and try it again.
-
Sorry to confuse you - the idea with upgrading hardware is that you remove the old hardware and put in something newer and better. So no, there won't be a conflict as the card won't be in there any more. If you're new to hardware it's a good place to start. We'll be more than happy to talk you through the upgrade process.
