  1. That's only really going to help if his machine uses a branded mobo (seeing as he's a noob I'm guessing it's a Dell or an HP or something). Hudson, that program I pointed you to should be able to tell exaclty the make and model of your computer (if you're concerned I can assure you that it is virus free and won't harm your machine). Is your computer branded?
  2. Yep, getting low res movies on a 6800 Are we sure there's only one movie res cos that sucks, they were much better in the original.
  3. Given all the problems people have been encountering getting the game up and running, I think it would be helpful if people posted working/nonworking hardware configs and relevant driver versions. It might help narrow things down a bit. To get the ball rolling, the game is running fine for me so far. My config is: Pentium 4 2.8 276mb pc2700 GeForce 6800 (nu) running Forceware 66.77 Soundblaster Audigy 2 Value (running 5.12.5.522) MSI 6577 (Intel 845ge) Windows XP Home Edition (sp2)
  4. I really hope this doesn't go the way of Bloodlines, with no effort to release a decent patch (although allegedly there the problem was that Activision refused to support Troika in releasing a patch). I'm guessing a lot of peole here are interested in NWN 2 - certainly any decision I make in buying it will depend on what I see of Obsidian here.
  5. That's a real shame - there area some great PC games out there, and in my experience they always look and perform far better than the console version (by all accounts the XBox version has it's own problems). I totally agree with you about Vampire Bloodlines - it has a great plot but has to be one of the worst coded games I have seen - it's slow even on my machine and has a major memory leak. To make matters worse Atari deny most of the performance bugs and blame it on people running it with machines below minimum spec, then released a patch which fixed only the most superficial bugs. The problem isn't PC gaming IMHO, it's developers who for one reason or another release a game without full testing, and hope they can patch the issues at a later date.
  6. Can you post the name and manufacturer of your motherboard (not the soundcard) and I'll have a look for older driver versions. It you don't know, download cpuz here and post back with the the manufacturer and model from the mainboard section.
  7. Ok the eax setting is actually good then (solves one issue by itself). Have you also tried selecting software sound on the same screen? (also have you tried checking the "force software sound" in the configuration program?) I seem to remember I posted detailed instructions earlier on selecting the level of hardware accleration for your soundcard in windows. Did you try them? If you couldn't follow them, post back and let me know.
  8. Just for the hell of it - have you tried alt-tabbing out of the game, opening up the config box, and reenabling sound there? What we're suggesting you try with the sound (apart from changing your hardware acceleration in Windows - can you confrim reults with it set to no acceleration and basic acceleration?) is this: With sound disabled, go into the game. In the options menu select sound and select "no eax" (or whatever they list it as) and select "software sound" (this last bit is very important). Exit the game and relaunch it with sound enabled. Please post back with your results, and confirm the steps you took (it's far easier for us to help you if we know more or less exactly what you've tried).
  9. I get the impression that all this patch does is iron out problems introduced when they did whatever is they do to turn a US pc game into a UK pc game. Not that I've noticed any problems with the UK version other than it starting windowed (which is annoying).
  10. Hudson - just a few thoughts that might help: First off, the game doesn't require eax to run. Have you tried cycling through all the audio quality options in game? Try using the software sound option (or if that's already enabled, switch to hardware) You could also try using older versions of the soundcard driver (do you have the driver that came with your machine?) - you may get lucky with a particular version (driver support for onboard sound can be iffy at times). Another options is to set your hardware acceleration to a lower setting. To do this, go into control panel and open sound and audio devices. Click on the audio tab and in the default device box click advanced. Under performance move the slider to basic (one notch before the end). Your speakers won't be causing a problem unless you aren't hearing sound in other games either. What I would really recommend for you if you have the money available is upgrade to a good quality soundcard - I guarantee it will make a big difference over any onboard soundcard, particularly if you have 5.1 speakers. The Audigy 2 Value is a bargain at the moment (and that definitely works with the game so far.
  11. It'd be nice - more people have widescreen monitors now for home-entertainment. Fingers crossed.
  12. Does anyone know if TSL will support widescreen resolutions? More games seem to these days...
  13. In terms of upgrades, I've just gone form a Celeron 2.2 to a P4 2.8, and had about a 150% performance boost. 3DMark is a gfx bm, so of course it will show more of an improvment with a gpu upgrade vs a cpu upgrade. Has anyone had any experience with the 6800le? It's not that much more than the 6600gt + has mad potential if you unlock pipelines.
  14. I'd imagine system requirements would only be a problem if you had very poor performance in KOTOR. Same engine so they can only push it so far...
  15. As many as that? How much more can they have left to do, assuming they don't add any extra content?
  16. I suppose it depends on how many cds we're talking about. It's not really worth putting a 2cd game on a dvd, but anything over that would be much better on a dvd (if only cos you'll have less of the bloody things to store + it must be cheaper to press 1 dvd than umpteen cds). I'm figuring they'll catch up eventually, look how long it took them to ditch disks! The arguments about people not having the hardware doesn't make sense considering how often the industry seems to want you to upgrade your graphics card. Maybe they don't want to invest the money in it yet?
  17. According to Amazon it's released on the 11th, and available tfor preorder now. (I think it's just bad wording on Game's behalf). With all the delays, I did consider holding off buying it but, then figured what do they care? The only profit threat they care about is piracy - and I don't think you can get away with telling lLucasarts that you've decided to move the payment date back
  18. It's just to make them look like they're doing something other than sitting on the PC version. (Let's us know deep down they care)
  19. It'd be a shame if the delay is just to put in copy protection - some 12 year old will find a way round it 1/2 and hour after release, so why bother? It's already at the point where legit games are unplayable cos the copy protection is too aggressive.
  20. I know - it'd be like having FMV in Empire Strikes Back (oh, wait...)
  21. I'd vote for a new engine. The KOTOR engine will have had it's day with Sith Lords. Source engine is OK (if they can iron out the bugs) but by the time they get around to KOTOR 3 it'll probably be obsolete anyway. Also with Source you can only control one character, which is fine for Bloodlines, but would suck for a more traditional rpg like KOTOR. (Bring back Infinity Engine )
  22. If they made it into a proper trilogy, cool! If it's just flogging a dead horse then forget about it. I've been really impressed with what I've seen from Obsidian all the way through - can't wait for NWN 2! On the other hand, Lucasarts have left a lot to be desired in their approach - I get the feeling that if they do a followup themselves then it will just be trade on the KOTOR name, a rushed job purely for the XBox.
  23. I'm a Medieval Studies graduate, now studying to be a solicitor. (lol just saw last post! - Another one!)
  24. Anyone else find it ironic that most of the delay between the US and UK release is for localisation? They have to translate the game into errrr English. I know that XBox has to be done in a different format, but the English PC version will be the same whatever country it's released in
