  1. I don't miss anything from the classics that it's not inPillars besides, maybe, the more consistent and fluid writing. Text walls must die.
  2. It has to do with the mood of the time. For example in Pillars 1 I made a female wild orlan barbarian (who I will continue to Deadfire). I haven't played a melee oriented character in an rpg for very long, fighter seemed one of the same so I was intrigued to try barbarian because of its mechanics (carnage - high intellect = more aoe basic damage etc). Also there was no barbarian companion in the base game so I took that into consideration also (I wanted to try as many classes as possible). Wild Orlan because it felt thematic to the class and because I've never played a "small race" in an rpg before. So, Pillars made me break all personal traditions regarding character creation in rpgs while making me love what I was avoiding (because everyone else made it unappealing). That's one of the most positive aspects of Pillars imo: everything about character is interesting.
  3. Bloody hell, this is the first I heard of it. Completed it 3 times by now and could've used it all those times. To be honest, the strategy guide was not that useful to me. I didn't read much of it to begin with, because I already knew most of game's mechanics by following the production closely and watching beta videos. Now it is even more irrelevant because there were so many patches it's outdated. The lore part, though, was great and read it more than once
  4. Buing the first game you get a PDF with lore, background etc. I think it's the strategy guide or something similar, so you can sit back and read official lore stuff. Other than that there is the Pillars wiki page and I'm pretty sure several youtube videos (though I haven't checked, I just find it hard not to be some ). Now, about gameplay time, finishing the base game plus the White March 1&2 expansions on normal and maybe skipping some side stuff it took me around 90 hours. It's a big game (as any self-respected rpg should be ).
  5. We should keep in mind that, from what devs have said, the main difference between companions and sidekicks is that the latter don't have a quest tight to the main story and don't participate in the relationship mechanic. Now the latter is kinda big but they'll have opinions, interjections, dialogues, a main quest that you should accomplish in order for them to follow you etc. They might be more involved and fleshed out than what we think.
  6. I was expecting Deadfire to be bigger... oh, well hope there is more uncharted islands to discover. After all it might look small but have noumerous maps.
  7. Indeed I found it! I hope the presentation of this document will force the devs to either confirm this is real or show us the real one to prove this isn't the one
  8. Ok, ok... So here's the result of my quest: After a thorough search in the endless junk maze that is the antique stores area of Monastiraki https://drive.google.com/open?id=11tqGQ-oiruAMzQArHWuAfouywueEACs1 I came across some old man called barba-Kostas, who claimed to have met a weird person some 36 years ago named Messier. That person claimed to be a companion of some supposedly famous sailor named Fulvano. He sold barba-Kostas a map of a far away land he traveled with that Fulvano guy. The map (barba-Kostas was kind enought to let me borrow the map for a quick scan) is this! https://drive.google.com/open?id=131r0wBlTh48FucT0PDTINTsDIoypRSKN So there you have it... the closest depiction of Deadfire Archipelago I could acquire. EDIT: for unknown kinds of problems the above images could not be shown. I changed them with direct links - hope it works :/
  9. Yeah, that’s my only concern about the ship system in Deadfire; how are you going to top it in Part 3? IF there is ever a part 3, I'd like it not to have a player base. Maybe only roaming here and there, adventuring and seting camp on the fly like Dragon AGe Origins. I miss this deeling of being an adventurer and not some big guy with power and real estate belongings.
  10. PoE3 plot leaked. POE is actually a prequel to Baldur's Gate, lol. Yes, and PoE3 gonna be a prequel to PoE1.
  11. I'm pretty sure that adra dragon will be there, because if saved she is seen (as Faloenred) boarding a ship in New Heomar. What better way to see consequences of this if not in the most "shipy" game yet? Or, maybe the devs are keeping her as a long term consequence for the third part (doubt that)! Of all the encounters in the first game, meeting the Adra Dragon again is what I'm mostly looking forward to.
  12. Sidekicks are companions without a questline tied to main plot and relationshim system. Think as what Minks was in BG2. PS. sidekicks were extensively explained in Fig campaign and several times by Sawer in updates and interviews.
  13. Strangely enough this is one of the main reasons Josh said he decided to change to system - to make it clearer when your weapon is working and when it is not. In beta1 it was even more extreme as you would do only 30% damage when you were below pen. This change should actually make it easier to play with less digging into stats. What it does, is communicate to you clearly when you play badly, while in PoE1 you had to do more analyzing. Many complained about thac0 system. Was it complicated? Not when it was explained. It made sense. But it was a badly designed system, that's why Wizards switched to D20 system. It accomplished the same thing but it was easier to use and explain. I feel that Deadfire makes a switch from D20 to thac0 with this new pen mechanic. Is it that complicated? No it's not; not when it's explained at least, but it's bad - it has holes and there are way better solutions that make even more sense and are easier to explain/communicate.
  14. What bad whould do if 1 point or armor reduced 10% of damage and 1 point on pen negated 1 point of armor? Simple, straight, easy to explain. Edit: OK, sorry this isn't the thread to complain about the mechanic. Won't waste OPs time any longer.
  15. Temple of Elemental Evil wants a word. I started and quit that game 4 times. In addition, it had bad interface too. When I say that they don't translate well, I mean that they use 20-sided dice roll to resolve stuff which is bad for modern standards. Rolling a dice on your own is great, it has tension and it makes sense in a tabletop environment. Video games must be video games. Pillars is a great example of how to depart from that mentality. Dragon Age too and basically every other computer game that doesn't use board game rules
  16. Still don't like it. I don't like at all that it has dead zones and I might add up or remove 1,2,3 pen and it'll be irrelevant. And even if it shows when I mouse-over I don't feel like doing so in a real-time game even with pause. When I pause in these games I only give orders, I don't hover the cursor over every combatant on the screen to gather basic info... I don't know. I really hope in action is very different.
  17. Pathfinder looks great in all but using the Pathfinder (or DnD 3.5) system. These. Systems. Translate. Bad. In. Computer. Games, goddammit!
  18. I'm sure that there are ways around lack of pen and the rest but my problem is that I don't want to micro, pause, bring up combat log etc every time I see "no pen!no pen!no pen!" and start calculating if my buffs are enough or not. Bad design in my book. And don;t want to be forced to walk around with a estoc or this or that weapon because the devs came up with bad combat mechanics. This is the first time ever I think so much over combat mechanics of a game in general. Usually I either really like them (the mechanics) or I'm indifferent. This sounds frustrating - hope it's not that much at the end.
  19. People don't play dwarves because in most cases they don't make them look that distinct. They usually look like short humans. In Warhammer Dwarves are more unique with their proportions right and their beards covering their entire bodies. DOS2 had great Dwarves too imo. Just look how they walk. I mean I played one! And they are unique in the world; you can do a lot as dwarf with others dwarves too. You can feel like one. WoW had very good dwarves also. Pillars' dwarves are some of the worst I've seen in fantasy tbh and they didn't even made them stand out as a race. This goes for Pillars' elves too. Only maybe Boreal dwarves and Pale elves are somewhat more interesting because of culture if anything.
  20. I haven't played the beta so my opinion could just be crap, but I follow the development closely and I also watch let's plays. And after a post by Sawyer on tumblr regarding penetration, I have to say: I really hate the mechanic! Youhave that much pen, and if that doesent' go over that much armor it doesen't do jack and if you have low and can't buff it over that much you're wasting your time and all that. Seriously... this sounds bad design imo. I don't want to waste time on counting how much pen I need at a time! I want to know that if I have low pen I'll do less damage, if I have high pen I'll di more damage. If I have low pen and buff it, I'll do as much damage more as I buff it and so on. Plain and simple. Usually I learn how a mechanic works and I keep it in mind and when I fight I plan around that and leave the computer do the calculations. Now there are dead zones? Nah-ah. Don't like at all, sorry. And usually when there's a mechanic that doesen;t work that well you just ignore ity and life goes on. Like Pillars 1 DR system. I thought it was cool, others said it didn;t work well but I didn;t care. I did what I did and the game progressed nicely. This time around I believe pen will get in the way and I fear I won't be able to enjoy combat :/
