how does the penetration mechanic feels like?
AndreaColombo replied to Ancelor's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
On this I agree. But it's what this thread is about -
[Bug?] Nairi mentioned Anaharu but I can't acknowledge it

That might depend on your skills/stats? I clearly remember her telling me all about what happened to him. -

how does the penetration mechanic feels like?
AndreaColombo replied to Ancelor's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
We're looking at it from a different angle. My problem with AP vs AR right now is that being just 1 point short of your enemy's AR means your frontliner is useless in combat. A Fighter with a Fine estoc using the estoc modal has 12 AP; one of the lagufaeth kinds has 13 AR (can't recall which one.) The Fighter is useless against the lagufaeth and there isn't much else it can do in the fight except dealing minimum damage. The dip in DPS for being below an enemy's AR needs to be gradual. The extra 30% damage for exceeding an enemy's AR by 5 points is harder to get unless you are building your entire (custom) party around stacking AP and/or are purposefully fighting under-leveled foes. However, I understand the 30% is currently multiplicative, which is way too much bonus damage. It should be additive. This way it would be just another damage bonus you could pursue, as opposed to THE damage bonus you want because it's so much better than any other. If 30% additive is too little for what it takes to get it, let's go with 50% additive—same as a critical hit. It would still be more balanced than 30% multiplicative. -
[Bug?] Nairi mentioned Anaharu but I can't acknowledge it
AndreaColombo replied to AndreaColombo's question in Backer Beta Bugs and Support
It is true about Nairi, but then you could be given the option to tell a white lie to avoid putting her in trouble, or the option to be honest and say she mentioned him. The options given now seem to imply that, to the best of your knowledge, she actually never mentioned him. -
how does the penetration mechanic feels like?
AndreaColombo replied to Ancelor's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
And that's bad? If you want a DPS-oriented character, you stack Accuracy and damage modifiers. That's how it should be. If you want a different type of character, you focus on other things. Right now all characters must stack as much AP as possible or be completely useless. Spells don't have enough penetration to do anything (and take too long to cast and are too easy to interrupt to be a tag along) and even an Estoc with its modal is not enough to overcome a lagufaeth's AR. Packing large amounts of AP is disproportionately more important than anything else. -
[UI] Minor ease-of-use tweak request
AndreaColombo replied to AndreaColombo's question in Backer Beta Bugs and Support
This has been mentioned more than once elsewhere but I figured I'd put it here to give it visibility with QA. It would be majorly convenient to be able to click any of these shield icons at the bottom of the character creation screen to go back to their title screen: At the end of character creation and having second thoughts about your sex and race? Just click the "Sex & Race" shield to go back to it while keeping all other selections from all other screens. Very convenient indeed -
Start a new game. Go to the shrine at the top left corner of the map. Talk to Nairi and exhaust all conversation options. Make sure you learn what happened to Anaharu. Go to the chieftain's hut and talk to Ruanu. Talk about Nairi and observe the following conversation node: Observe that Nairi totally mentioned Anaharu but you in order to acknowledge it you must lie, as though in reality she hadn't mentioned him. But she did, so saying "She sure did." would be the truth and the other two options are lies.

[UI] Minor ease-of-use tweak request
AndreaColombo posted a question in Backer Beta Bugs and Support
Upon reaching the Attributes screen at character creation I noticed that the only way to display an attribute's description in the right pane was to assign or remove a point from it. Simply clicking the attribute wouldn't do. I would request that clicking the attribute's name on the left pane (or, even better, clicking anywhere in the rectangular space that hosts an attribute's name) brings up its description in the right pane. Pretty minor, but it would be convenient. -
Master Thread of Typos and Text Errors
AndreaColombo posted a question in Backer Beta Bugs and Support
Hello. I figured I'd start a master thread where to collect all typos and punctuation-, grammar-, and syntax-related mistakes we run into in the backer beta. I'll provide screenshots of each I find to facilitate their finding on the devs' part. I would ask Obsidian to confirm whether these will be looked at, for there would be no point in keeping an eye out for them otherwise; appreciate they are minor issues compared to most other things right now, so it would be understandable. In the mouse-over text for Kohopa: a) "Many Huana worship Berath as of Rikuhu"; I believe "of" should be omitted. b) "...two constituent eels, Kohopa..."; I believe a colon is in order after "constituent eels". c) Never mind the third underlined item in the screenshot; I've changed my mind about it -
Animation offset bug with 2-handed weapons
AndreaColombo posted a question in Backer Beta Bugs and Support
Start a new game. At character creation, select at least one proficiency with a 2-handed weapon. I personally encountered this bug with Estocs and Great Swords (the latter is depicted in the screenshot enclosed.) Once in-game, go to your inventory and equip the 2-handed weapon. Click the small icon in the bottom right corner of the part of the screen that shows your character model (i.e. the button that makes your character draw the weapon and wield it.) Wait until the initial animation stops playing and your character rests the 2-handed weapon on their shoulder. Observe that your character's left hand is below the weapon's hilt. Your character's hand should rest on the weapon's hilt and hold it. Screenshot: -
armored graze description correct?
AndreaColombo replied to Madscientist's question in Backer Beta Bugs and Support
aartz, my apologies for the necro but something to consider: I understand the penalty to recovery time from wearing armor has been made significantly steeper in Deadfire. Going by memory, in PoE Brigandine and Plate Armor gave a 50% penalty; in Deadfire it's 100%. Shouldn't "Armor Grace" be rebalanced around this? 20% was a much bigger deal in PoE than it is in Deadfire; for the tier you get Armored Grace from 20% is rather unimpressive. -
Feedback - Races & Appearances
AndreaColombo replied to Falk Schütze's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
True, but as somebody else pointed out, they are not in the same art style as the other portraits in the game. For that reason, as far as I'm concerned they may as well not exist; there's no way I'm having my main stick out like a sore thumb for using a portrait that differs wildly in style from every other. Plus there's the watercolor version to account for—appreciate it might be relatively easy to pull off for some people, but it certainly isn't for many others. As for the eye-color shader, I trust the devs' ability to prioritize. It's a cool-to-have; if it takes long to implement, it should be ditched. I think it's fair for people to throw in ideas like this one, though. Feedback is the entire purpose of the beta. -
how does the penetration mechanic feels like?
AndreaColombo replied to Ancelor's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
If the penalty for being but 1 point short of your enemy’s armor rating wasn’t so harsh, stacking penetration wouldn’t be the be all and end all of combat. EDIT: To clarify, I like the mechanic itself; I just think it should be gradual as opposed to "1 point short? Your DPS is severely undercut and you become useless in combat." -
suggestions to improve the game
AndreaColombo replied to Madscientist's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
The dynamic weather system is very good, but in Tikawara (sp?) it often felt as though it was on a timer rather than random. Every X time it rains. This way the effect feels gimmicky and gets old fast. It would be better if there was a random chance of rain to go with winds of different speed. Characters don't seem to turn toward you as you initiate dialog. I talked to Poko-dude in Tikawara and he kept doing his thing and moving around instead of facing me, which felt really odd. Descriptions of abilities, classes, races, etc. could use more specificity. A lot more. What does "Resistance to X" mean? How much resistance? Is it immunity? Is it Y % chance of the effect failing entirely against you? The Fighter has an update for Knock Down that makes the enemy fly in the air before falling prone; does it do anything mechanically on top of adding visual spectacle? The ability's description doesn't say and I'm not wasting a precious talent point for mere razzle-dazzle action. Race descriptions don't mention racial abilities. Etc. Every time there's an ability or spell to pick, I'd like to know exactly what it does mechanically; how much it adds/subtracts to which stats and for how long. If it's a % increase/decrease, it would be good to know if it is additive or multiplicative. During CC it would be useful if we could use the shield-shaped icons at the bottom of the screen as shortcuts to reach the relative character creation screens. -
Backer Beta First Impressions
AndreaColombo replied to Adam Brennecke's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
My overall impression so far is that the new system shows promise but is rough around the edges—unsurprisingly, being new and in alpha stage (Josh himself said the game's in alpha stage in the video for update 42, even though this is called a backer beta.) With some polish, it has the potential to be better than PoE. Current priorities for me are more gradual armor rating vs. penetration system, and more oomph to spell casters (currently spells take too long to cast, are too easy to interrupt, and you generally have too few available.) -
Feedback - Races & Appearances
AndreaColombo replied to Falk Schütze's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Seconded. I haven't perused other models enough to judge them, but it would help to have the option to change eyebrow color too. This way we can have it match or mismatch to our liking instead of being forced to stick to a standard. -
Use the code FindGameData to find item codes. For example, “FindGameData Sword” will list all resources that have “Sword” in their name.

I agree that eyebrows should always match hair color. It always looks unnatural to me when they do not; I doubt adventurers in ancient times dyed their hair (a scenario in which eyebrows wouldn’t match.) -

Penetration/Armor should be more linear
AndreaColombo replied to mifest's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I agree the penetration/rating system is currently too "all or nothing." It's a good system but it needs to be more gradual. As it is now, stacking penetration is the be all and end all; no other thing comes close in importance as being just 1 point short of your enemy's armor rating curbs your DPS to the point your contribution to combat is nil. A gradual approach would make penetration a strategic and/or tactical concern on par for afflictions, buffs, etc.. -
