  1. Weak story lines are a consequence of developing for a "larger audience" and not necessarily a result of developing a sandbox / open world RPG. (See below...) http://youtu.be/JweTAhyR4o0?t=4m30s Edit: The Might & Magic series was essentially open world and had some good story lines. No, I'm not talking about since they were bought by 3DO and whoever owns them now. I'm talking way back to MM2: Gates to Another World and the two Xeen installments. And it's not just about the story, what stuck with me is puzzles like this:
  2. Actually, I'm not opposed to an ISO open world. As much as I liked NWN, etc. I get tired of linear world space where you have to do x, y and z to get to another area, and then that area is essentially vacant of any function, save for the time-sink of traveling through it, for the rest of your game.
  3. Yes, fantasy-horror please. Original IP, inspired by Lovecraft and similar settings, but not a copy of them. Please no slendermen, I find it disturbing that so many people are actually scared by that shallow atrocity of fiction. (Yes, it's shallow as all they do is sneak up and essentially say, "Bo!" There is never story behind him that wasn't made up on the spot by someone.) Real darkness is long overdue! I want a torch to be a godsend. I want that "there's something creepy out there in the dark" feeling, without it being immediately undermined by an ambient light level that never drops below what you see around sunset. EDIT: No saving the world either! Yourself, the damsel, the town... that's plenty. Messianic protagonists are getting old at this point.
  4. I watched "Sparkle Sings Dylan" for about the 500th time... Love that video. http://youtu.be/DYI9neNiFSc
  5. I like your sister, she has the right attitude!
  6. Catching up on news, I ran into this article on RPS this morning: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/12/14/obsidians-bold-future-eternity-meets-skyrim-a-second-ks/ I'll now quote the article, which quotes Feargus , "What I’m trying to figure out is, how could we make something that is more like a Skyrim for PC – forget console for now – with the engine we made in Unity for Eternity? Where we are with our conversation, quest, data editors, and all of that. If we were careful about scope and let Chris Avellone go wild with creating a new world, more of an open world, what could we do?" Later, "What could we do that would be interesting enough and at the right quality level?” he ponders aloud. “Because the one worry we have about moving away from pre-rendered stuff, is that as soon as we get into first-person or third-person or something like that, the expectation of triple-A-level console graphics comes in. So what can we do for a lower budget but let people still say, ‘Whoa, that’s crazy’?” Obsidian... Guys&Gals... I have one word for you: MINECRAFT Seriously, we loves open world and sandboxy RPG settings. Skyrim's success in spite of it's many terrible narratives and even, at times, nonsensical NPC interactions ("Here, take this and hold on to it.") is proof that many of us are dying to play the character we make up as we go along playing. Minecraft's success is proof that people will overlook graphics quality in the face of a great playing experience. So, Obsidian wants to kickstart an open world RPG for PC with a great story, a rich and detailed world that has "only" Unity quality graphics, holds on to text based dialogue windows and only has voice over for the 10 most important world characters? I'm IN! Where do I pledge? EDIT: Just pleaaase make mod-friendly part of the design goals. I was really looking forward to doing something for Skyrim right up until I read about the community content navmesh bug.
  7. Spiritual successor to "Stroker 64" Note: If you want to know, look it up. But keep in mind that what you're likely to find is NSFW.
  8. Sorry - it's a K for you Damnit! Foiled again...
  9. I have no K, but no hurry... In fact, I'll trade the K for next week's winning PowerBall numbers if you have that.
  10. As I once read from a developer... Ideas are cheap. Put a group of folks in a room, give them an hour, and they'll have at least 3 decent game ideas. The hard part is generating enough interest for money and time to be set aside to pursue that idea in earnest.
  11. OP: See below... http://youtu.be/JweTAhyR4o0?t=2m18s I like Skyrim, I really do... But playing with a mouse and keyboard is really frustrating if using the default user interface. Edit: I'd also like to add that the now unspoken requirement of voice acting for every line of dialogue has been a terrible move for RPGs. Voice acting is expensive, and as a result dialogues in many cases have reduced trite and meaningless babble that you're fed up with after the first hour of play. Good character interaction is far easier to write than it is to act, and far less expensive to produce. Want and example? At no point when playing Planescape Torment did I run repeatedly into a dialogue bubble saying, "I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow in the knee."
  12. I tried this and the remapping was ignored by many programs. I use a SSD and did this by logging in as administrator, opening the registry, and changing the master path for user directories to my E: Drive, which is a 2TB mirror.
  13. Just an FYI for you guys... Saving "user specific application data" in the "My Documents" directory is the "Microsoft Way." Just like /home is for *NIX OSes. On Windows Vista and newer, you might need to run the application as an Administrator in order to save some things in the %PROGRAM FILES% environment. Personally, I prefer it to save in my user directory (My Documents) because I know all my saves get backed up with my user profile.
  14. Unity is, by default, not desinged to run uncompiled scripts. However, several plugin vendors have made run-time script parsers available for Unity for everything from Lua to F#. Obsidian would need to acquire one of these and then give us the details of what globals there are to modify and what they do, etc. Hopefully that would/will be setup as some sort of Object/Struct heiarchy instead of a huge flat list of global game vars ala Elder Scrolls. As far as assets are concerned, the community could easily use UnityFree to create things like areas, triggers, NPCs, etc. However, Obsidian would need to setup a dynamic load & parse for that with heavy duty exception handling to prevent engine crashes created by buggy mods. Because, even if they shipped the uncompiled project to modders, and they won't do this, we still couldn't compile our mods in without Unity Pro. Additionally, the areas are 2D backdrops created from 3D tilesets that were rendered, and then captured as an image. Unity definitely doesn't have a built in tool for that so, Obsidian would need to make a for-community version of the tool and provide it to us. That is, assuming they're not just using Blender and a few plugins. (I'm not an art guy, so I dunno how or what handles the tilesets they showed.) I'll have a look at the game files during the beta and see how things look. But, I won't make any attempts to reverse-engineer or uncompile anything unless Obsidian says that is okay to do. But, at this point we just have to wait and see on the whole modding subject, it's entirely possible they've got plans for the Steam Workshop, etc.
  15. DRM Free scares you? That means it doesn't have any copy protection. Given the new portal, I'm going to assume the options will be Steam, GoG or direct download from the game's portal site. (There was a download button on the delivery part when finalizing your pledge information.) I'll probably use Steam since it will manage my patches. That is unless Obsidian has some expense tied to Steam delivery of backer products. In that case I'll just download it from the portal or wherever so it won't cost them anything.

  17. Synonyms for pillar noun column of building, or freestanding column Edit: Wrapped the endless list in a spoiler.
  18. Before I vote, I have a couple of questions. First, are you guys getting tight on developement cash? Because, if you are, please say that. Most of us here do realize: We funded a project, not purchased a finished product. Crowdfunding isn't an exact science and it's possible you pitched a little too many features. Obamacare inflated employee costs by no small amount, for everyone, everywhere. That said, it's pretty obvious by the videos and picutres that you guys have been developing a game and not just riding out funding. (Not that you would.) If money has gotten a little tight I don't think many of us would complain about buying a t-shirt to see it finished, given what we've seen so far. I mean, people have tossed in excess of 30M at Star Citizen so far... Now, if everything is on target. I wouldn't mind throwing in a little more for wilderness areas provided that we're not talking about 4 months of additional development. How much time will these extra additons take? Most of us aren't game developers and can't accurately guess at that. Now, with everything looking as good as it does... Any idea if y'all will be starting another crowdfund? That is, assuming some of the profits from Eternity sales will fund expansions.
  19. That video looked spectacular... I'm really looking forward to this now. I did notice something missing though, as others have stated. Once combat started the battlefield looked a little too static. You might want to put in some idle-time animations of characters jokeying for position or even just bouncing from location to location a bit so it feels a little more alive.
  20. Looks interesting. Would that be intelligible to a non-techie? Yep, language-impartial as far as I know. And, would help a person understand why making 6 line consumption calls to boiler code is really just the tip of an iceberg.
  21. C/C++ are good stuff. But not the greatest for rapid prototyping when you're trying to learn how game engines work, etc. Just about any library you would want to use in C/C++ has an available Python wrapper.
  22. This dog is finally going to hunt on November 15th, just in time for my birthday. The engine looks just spectacular... Makes me wonder if they're using double-precision for the world space coordinates. http://www.egosoft.com/community/news_en.php

  24. I get into just as many arguments with religious people... Random hater says, "Damn homosexuals are an abomination!" Me, "1. The word wasn't translated correctly and a more correct interpretation is taboo, as opposed to abomination. 2. Aren't you a Christian?" Hater, "Yes I'm a Christian, that's why I don't like homos." Me, "Well, that doesn't make sense to me. You're quoting the Old Testament, which Jesus said he came to fulfill. Hence, you should turn the other cheek instead of seeking an eye for an eye." Hater, "But it's God's law..." Me, "Render onto God what is God's. Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord. So then, are you purporting to be the instrument of God's justice? That's pretty arrogant and self-righteous to assume that you know God's intentions. As a matter of fact, when an angry mob was about to stone an adulteress to death Jesus stopped them and said, 'Let you who is without sin cast the first stone.' So, are you then perfect as well? That you may cast judgement upon another?" Hater, "Umm... But the pastor said..." Me, "Oh, so you're carrying on based upon someone else's interpretation of what you have failed to read and interpret yourself? You run around casting hatred and disdain upon others when Jesus said to love your fellow man as if he was your own brother. Maybe you should go back and read that book yourself and let God handle its own business and attend to your own. It is people like you that caused Ghandi to say, 'I like your Christ, but not your Christians.'" I have read a number of "holy books" and it never ceases to astonish me that so many people can purport to put so much stock into a book that they quite obviously have not read.
