I ran across this article on PC gamer where Monaco designer Andy Schatz explains: Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't content that can be created scale with development funds available? I mean, you can get a price quote for remodeling your home that includes a room by room breakdown. How many rooms you ultimately get remodeled would depend on how much is coming in that tax return. I'm just curious where this guy's all-or-nothing ideology is coming from...

Wouldn't that depend on how much silica is in it? I saw a NatGeo program once that compared different viscosities of lava around the Ring of Fire. Some, they explained, were runny like pancake batter and others were almost clay like in density; do to high silica content. As I understand it, the the thick and heavy type is the one responsible for blowing off the top of mountains and what have you.

Lets not beat up on Obsidian too much. I suspect they weren't given a lot of maneuvering room on that project.

"Have you ever seen the accused causing or near events like those that befell Ember?" OBJECTION! Proximity to a crime is not the equivalent of committing a crime... bitch!

There is one potential down-side, a big one... If the intent of this, and Intel's announcement that it's leaving the motherboard business, is to push Trusted Computing. Microsoft has managed to slip that one into SurfaceRT without public outcry, but I only see that getting worse if they're making desktops now. Hopefully business will have the sense god-give-a-dog and not lock themselves in further while M$ sits back and watches the Open Source movement die. Edit: For those that don't know... Trusted Computing's ultimate goal is to prevent the execution of unsigned code. Guess who decides if you get a certificate or not?

This is a bad move... M$ is already falling into disfavor with lots in the industry and more importantly with their customers. Alienating them further by competing in the PC space will likely push people towards linux distros and more importantly towards a potential google OS. I mean, that would be good for the consumer, but this is bad for the M$ monopoly.

Sorry guy... I was actually just kidding. Didn't mean for it to actually bother you.

Am I disagreeing that what you wrote is the same as what I wrote in both form and essence? Absolutely... Unless of course, in the case that you did not write what you actually meant. I essentially wrote that D&D rules are not well suited for CRPGs. I understood your statement to mean D&D mechanics are not acceptable for CRPGs. <shrug> Perhaps my own statement wasn't clear, I don't know... I don't derive any satisfaction out of this sort of back-and-fourth. However, when I feel like I'm being misinterpreted, or that someone is trying to put words in my mouth, I will argue that point.

It sounds like the issue is exactly what you have mentioned, you don't understand the D&D ruleset so a game that uses it is confusing and daunting. I grew up playing AD&D so it makes sense to me but I can understand your concern. I understand the rules fine... they just do not play smoothly in a CRPG. I've mentioned the problems in other threads: the very nature of the "round", bizarre buff lengths, silly miss rates with concealment, etc. What's worse, is that the AI definitely doesn't understand the rules and does all sorts of flaky and annoying things. Okay but then take the AI off and spend more time choosing what your characters should do in combat when you use pause. I really don't remember major issues in combat when I did this, so I don't agree that the D&D ruleset is not appropriate in a CRPG. What I wrote was, "they don't play smoothly in a CRPG." 'they don't play smoothly in a CRPG' != 'D&D ruleset is not appropriate in a CRPG.'

I wouldn't know... Permission to what? I was just saying I wouldn't go taking their images, doctoring them up and then putting them on facebook or whatever. If someone were to mistake whatever you did for "official" stuff from Obsidian and then criticize it for whatever reason and create a ruckus on gaming sites, etc. Obsidian might be a little upset.

A Spell-free Project Eternity?

Um... Who was being rude? Some of us made passing comments about religion, me included. However, I don't recall anyone personally attacking him. Admittedly, I thought him to be posting flame-bait at first, until he used the word preternatural. I've met few people whom know what it means, much less use it in any sort of non-formal writing. BTW: Sean-nós may not qualify as "chanting" but ya'll may enjoy nonetheless. http://youtu.be/X4Eu51gyHy8- 99 replies

I don't see it that way... They're still making something from a tile set which means using tiles in itself doesn't equal bad graphics, which was my point. I think the IE games used the 1 piece backgrounds because, when they came out, 3D modeling & texturing was still in its infancy. Tiles can look good, provided there is enough variety and they're well done. Hopefully there will be a way for modders to use them.

It may be too that I just don't like D&D mechanics in CRPGs without more modifications to the mechanics. I was really happy to read Josh's update today. They seem to be focused on building mechanics that work well in the digital realm for P:E.

South Park Studios VS THQ
Luridis replied to C2B's topic in South Park: The Stick of Truth: General Discussion
Uh, correct me if I am wrong but... Didn't SPS choose Obsidian as the developer? They may be making an attempt at preserving their right to choose the publisher. With UBI's current customer dissatisfaction level, this could be an attempt to prevent a company they perceive as potentially annoying their customers from making a mess of the release. -
Which is precisely why I have always, and will continue to, refuse to purchase any game from Steam with the "3rd Party DRM" tag.
-
Chances are better than not that those tiles are more than 2D textures. They may be wrapped on actual models. Also... Be careful about messing around with a company's unfinished IP. They may take offense, and rightfully so, if they start seeing all sorts of renderings built from their artwork when the game itself isn't finished. If something you were to do happened to show up and receive criticism on a gaming news website Obsidian would likely be pretty upset because their work was misrepresented.

A Spell-free Project Eternity?
Luridis replied to frgodfrey's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
And in your statement is the truth, good and evil are subjective and ultimately tied to the narrow and intimately personal porthole from which we view another. Very similar to the way reality itself is subjective to an observer. I believe there was once a somewhat well known scientist by the name of Einstein that had a well known theory that revolved around the idea that reality is relative to the observer. Now, if we just had a definitive way to find out if intent on the part of the observer has any effect on the collapse of quantum super position... Hell, we'd have an explanation for a whole lot of things now, wouldn't we? Pardon my digression of the thread, I have no real intent to hijack here.- 99 replies
