  1. I'd assume - perhaps wrongly - that the appeal in the case that Zalpha is talking about is the self-identification with a protagonist that is common in fiction. Otherwise tearjerkers would never have someone reaching for a hanky and scary films would never elicit a jump or cry of fright. Which we know they do. There is a certain degree of self-investment in any fictional storytelling that engages the reader/viewer. In that light, identifying with his protagonist and their relationship with Aerie to an extent that it moved them isn't surprising and not that dissimilar to someone saying that two characters romance in a book was "deeply touching and moving" or similar. That said, there are the unhealthy investments in fictional characters that happen with some people which I understand is what you're talking about but I think a distinction has to be made between the two camps as often in these discussions - frankly - it seems like anyone who is "pro-romance" is seen as the unhealthily obsessed and not those who've engaged in a movie story or character point in a healthy, typical to fiction way. I agree. I wasn't trying to imply that everyone who wants X is a self-inserter, just that self-inserting in a game is strange and often leads to unhealthy attachments with characters or seeing the game as nothing more than a combat simulator.
  2. Which one is bad? I liked FEA enough(played every English FE release and FE4 and FE6 through translated emulators) but thought it screwed the pooch when it came to balancing skills and enemy reinforcements.
  3. I quit because the quest to get Firebeard's scroll is broken. A minor thing I know, but pretty damn annoying. IMO, it isn't worth the extra $10, especially when you can spend that $10 on BG2 and do BGT. I don't want Beamdog to crash and burn because of it though, I just will avoid BG2EE unless they provide content that a mod couldn't similarly provide.
  4. IIRC, weapons will be in groups to avoid the "damn, no +5 Katanas" that happened in BG2. I do think that there should be a wide variety of powerful magic equipment available at higher levels, but I'm pretty sure I don't have to worry about that.a
  5. I'm going to play on whatever difficulty allows foes to play by the same rules as the party(no +/- damage, no more/less effective abilities, etc.) and has friendly fire. I'll take a better look at the modes when the game comes out, but I'm currently leaning towards expert if anything.
  6. Well at least I'll have a use for my popcorn stockpile now. The thought of promancers and antimancers making bad arguments and flaming excites the troll in me. What a horrifying statement. Call me old fashioned, but I tend to reserve my most intimate, vulnerable, and personal emotions and sentiments for actual, organic, cognitive, human beings. It is the reason why I will be married in the spring. What a brave new world we live in. In the interest of not being in here just to drink tears, I'll use this statement to make a point. The biggest problem IMO isn't romance, it is self-insertation. You aren't the PC. The PC is a fictional character and is not your alter ego or whatever. You can create a PC that is like you(despite living in a fictional world and likely being idealized), but that is a character and not you. The relationships that character has are not your own, and being friends(or romancing or being hated enemies) with a fictional character is weird.
  7. I wouldn't mind seeing NPCs in various towns having kids as time passes(assuming PE takes place over more than one year), but IMO adventurers having kids and carying them around while they kill monsters and **** is insane. For one, that is some serious child endangerment.
  8. Freaked out because I thought my gpu was overheating, turned out to be nothing.
  9. Well that is incredibly ****ed up and makes me ashamed to be the same species as these bastards. If it wasn't for that other Wals thread that I'm spamming with images of scantily clad women, I would do that here to cheer myself up.
  10. Man sounds so good, that you can go after cops over there by pressuring local politicians. That kind of **** simply doesn't fly here. The police in Texas are pretty much untouchable unless you have undeniable proof and even then it is harder to see justice served. Perhaps is is because politicians here love being seen as "tough on crime" and have no problem condoning police overkill or brutality.
  11. Today I have a bitch of a hangover and the house to myself. I'm going to be spending a good amount of time playing videogames. True. Illusion is pretty much useless(other than invisibility and muffle) if you don't put perks in it. If you need some build advice PM me.
  12. I don't know if they changed the mechanic because of people bitching on the internet or not, but I'm disappointed and satisfied at the same time. I'm happy that there isn't a skill that makes items more durable, but I would have liked to see item durability implemented. IMO, a better system would have had a set amount of max durability points for a base item(unenchanted weapon or armor) that increased in durability points and durability damage resistance by being enchanted(or improved with smithing) or made with better materials, and that you could perform basic field repairs on the item to prevent it from totally breaking down.
  13. It has been stated that the Barbarian will be prone to exhaustion. Whether this is due to them taking more stamina damage than health or Frenzy eating up stamina is unknown, but I'm positive there will be some reason for it.
  14. Perhaps if they do subclasses, one of the Barbarian's subclasses could be named that or Jugernaught. Yes and no. Since the Barbarian takes less health damage, he has a higher longevity than other classes. He actually needs to rest LESS. Sawyer said that the Barbarian would be more likely to pass out than other classes. I don't know exactly how it will be implemented, I assume that it would be tied to Frenzy. More info is needed I suppose. Ideally, the classes should be constructed in a way where both having a weapon master fighter and a meat shield fighter are both viable possibilities. I'm optimistic about OE implementing classes in such a way.
  15. From what I've gleamed Barbarians will: 1) take less damage than other classes 2) have a frenzy ability 3) possibly collapse in combat 4) have minor AoE abilities Sounds quite a bit like a traditional Barbarian to me, charge in and smash then take a breather. I'm curious, will the number of targets they can attack be dependent on a modal ability? I think that being able to switch from weaker AoE attacks to more powerful single strikes would be a good way to handle them. Also, will there be an offensive counterpart to the Fighter's Defender stance?
  16. That is where my vote goes.
  17. I'm sure there are, I just have no desire to post pictures of them. ^Much more appealing to me.
  18. I'll keep that in mind, but I'm currently engrossed in a BGT playthrough. In addition to being awesome, it is making me very anxious for PE.
  19. Hmm, perhaps we could develop a game that replaces craming? The tagline: "**** studying, play this!". I've had some pretty terrible teachers(went to a under-funded Texas school district), so that might be an improvement. I remember my 8th grade Spanish teacher would stop teaching to talk about her hair.
  20. If I had a teacher like Hurlshot for Algebra or Calculus in highschool, I probably would have got "A"s and paid attention, instead of getting "b"s on tests and sleeping through everything else.
  21. I made a large pot of chili and wrapped good hotdogs(from a meat market, not the crap you get from a supermarket) in bacon, which I intend to grill with some burgers. Made a 2 cookie cakes last night and am going to stack them and frost with cream cheese frosting. Currently drinking a nice stout and about to fire up BGT. I've been thinking of reinstalling that, any worthwhile mods I should know about?
