Defeating enemies, through whatever means at disposal, is what should be rewarded, not the act of killing. I could play a game with no XP and be perfectly satisfied. But if you are doing something(combat in this case) solely for the XP, not because of enjoyment, then you should probably play something else. I certainly don't. Especially in a game where almost everyone has supernatural abilities.

The ratio of combat abilities to non-combat abilities has not been confirmed, so your example is flawed. Tying XP to completing objectives or challenges is better than tying it to a body count, because the character actually has to succeed at something to recieve XP. Surely it is more reasonable to correlate growth with success rather than slaughtering mooks.

I personally like it when fantasy does twist what we take for granted so I voted "Challenge". My second vote was for the "I'm not actually particularly attached to fantasy genre", because IMO most settings can be interesting if done well. In terms of RPGs, while I would appreciate a break from the usual suspects(I think a well-done superhero/villain RPG would be fantastic, if it was possible to balance well), I don't feel an incredibly strong need to break away from post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, and fantasy simply to break way.

Excellent point. I like (role)playing a character who's doing things the smart way and avoids combat if it's the optimal thing to do, even though as a player I really enjoy combat. The character needs the incentive (in the form of XP), not the player. Wait what? I mean, this is literally the stupidest thing I've ever heard in this context. I can feel my IQ drop by just repeating this sentence, nay, by looking at it. I'm wondering how the character knows that by killing something, he will gain a certain amount of XP and have a boost to all of his abilities my self.

I disliked both DA2 and ME3 for mechanical reasons myself. Then again, I generally dislike action games and shooters so YMMV.
