I finished up a load of studying, and am now trying to go to sleep. Going to go to classes tomorrow, work Thursday, then get epically drunk on Friday.

Drama in indy gaming and games journalism part 2
I'm still not sure if I'm supposed to be dead or dying. Gaming journalism is too shoddy to be clear in its own muckraking attempts.

Is it just me or combat is really tedious?
Recently tried out a Muscle Wizard on hard and got stomped because of the DT bug. So too hard to say currently, it feels more.involved than vanilla BG to me, somewhere around SCS.

Lets discuss Game Balance in RPG design and how it affects PoE
PK htiw klaw eriF replied to archangel979's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)I don't see PoE BETA as unfun because of Sawyer's desire for balance, I see it being unfun because it is currenly buggy as hell and unbalanced.

Scottish Independence?
Do the Scots really want independence, or can no one else understand what the hell they're talking about through those accents?

My Personal comments so far..
Well, I think I might have found one reason for its pretty hard. Those prerolled BB_heroes havent been given any weapon talents... lol.. Not to mention they aren't equipped very well for the level they're at.

Don't complain about battles being too hard
For some reason I was able to steamroll through the beta with a Monk, but Paladin and Cipher were difficult.

What are you reading?
In my admittedly small experience, those that don't think they need an editor need one the most. It takes additional sets of eyes to pick out glaring flaws in your prose, even if you feel that it works as is. *Shrug* And I like King as well. It was probably one of the worst things 12 year old me could've read, but I loved it.

Bludgeoning weapons, go for the wood beetles, use the cleric spell that suppresses hostile effects. The spiders are worse though, DoT stuff as a whole really needs to be toned down.

Choosing spells in your Grimoire...
Seems to be, although we haven't seen a whole lot of levels yet. You can change the spell loadout at any time (although if you do it during combat, you'll lose the ability to cast. Not sure for how long. I think until after combat ends). Oh I figured it was like a D&D mage or Sorcerer and you had to rest to replenish?? The closest analogue is Pathfinder's Arcanist. Essentially you select spells to memorize, and can cast from that list if you have spell slots available. IMO, Wizards should get more spells known on level up.

Is the PoE beta + the update info on target with the KS goal - IE spiritual successor?
Almost everything in the EE can be achieved by installing BGT, and the original content isn't very good. It is easier to mod and has more things you can change than BG2 though. In a few years and several good mods are created, it might edge out the originals for the go-to for classic D&D RPGs. YMMV.

The single thing that would make you happier with POE.
Yes. If you $10 and a few hours to kill, play the original vanilla. Encounter design and enemy variety sucks, there is almost no character development wit NPCs, and the story is a bit lacking. I'd go as far to say that IWD is better in all areas except for exploration. do the BGT if you feel like playing through BG1 content, and add a lot of mods. The EE added some nice things, like 2 evil NPCs that made it possible to have an all-evil full party, but with the lack of support for Ascension and no compatibility for a plethora of older mods, I honestly can't recommend it. In fact, doing a BWP install of BGT would be the best course of action, but it takes like 3+ hours to do it manually with SCS' AI components taking a very long time. Worth it IMO, currently playing as a SK'd Kensai Magus(google Pathfinder Kensai Magus if confused) and am having a real good time. To get back on topic, I would tweak Cipher to be role-ready for gish stuff. Paladins and Gishs are my favorite characters to play, and I don't think the PoE Cipher is that great as a gish. IMO, it needs a higher base deflection, health, and melee accuracy along with powers that focus on debuffing enemies or strengthening combat ability.

You're insane! BG is fantastic. No, BG2 was. Vanilla BG is the worst parts of low-level D&D shoved into a vidya game.

I'm afraid we're going to have to put you down, old boy. *Missing String*

Oi, don't compare that piece of **** to Baldur's Gate. Baldur's Gate was pretty bad. Play BGT without any AI mods(which is a waste of time, tbh) and the difference in quality going from BG to BG2 is pretty startling. Currently playing BGT-BWP with SCS right now and without the enhanced AI and encounters, the BG section would be pretty boring.

List necessities you think would fix the game in broad strokes
Yeah I agree. IMO, Ciphers should get quick Powers that complement gishing, like boosts to combat abilitiy and quick debuffs. The Charm is way too OP for a first level power that can be used a lot in one day.

Combat. As it is, combat is pretty wonky and DoTs are horrendously overpowered.

I actually think the Cipher could use some beefing up in terms of HP and deflection. IMO it doesn't work well as a gish, which IIRC it is supposed to be. I don't disagree about the charm power, that seems like it should be level 3 or 4.
