On the case of grittness

You mentioned FATAL and maturity in the same sentence. Dividing by zero creates less of a paradox than that. -
Children
horocaust replied to kmelt93's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I don't care whether there will be children or not, but if they will be present then I'd prefer them killable without penalizing the player for it. I find it laughable when the player can sell people into slavery, obliterate entire towns and make Hitler look like Gandhi, but harming children? No, that is wrong, how could you even think of that?- 117 replies

Yes, I do hope that elves won't all live in forests and dwarves all be blacksmiths, and concept art of vaguely Indian dwarven ranger does give me that hope, but if you want Indians, why not just make Indians? That's my biggest objection to DA considering races: dwarves were unusual because they had a caste system and were resistant to magic, and elves were gypsies and jews when they weren't druids. But if you just took humans and gave them the same properties that elves and dwarves had, the game wouldn't have lost in quality. So in addition to fantastic French and Byzantine people you'd get fantastic gypsies.

[Merged] Durability
horocaust replied to Audron's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Considering that the game will have limited and predetermined loot, I don't want unique, which is all of them, pieces of equipment to break. -
But the audience, the entirety of it, is, in fact, hardcore, else they wouldn't support this project. Considering polls, people want Eternity to be like Torment and Baldur's Gate, and both of these are not the softest of games. Considering polls again, most people who support the project have gaming experience which spans decades, and they've seen elves and dwarfs done to death and beyond. Now, maybe there's some appreciation for it and I'm just being a hipster, but I really think we have too much cliches to ask for more.

I know I'm going to be in minority, but here's this. I prefer games I play to be pleasing aesthetically. I prefer seeing well done character portraits, I prefer armour and clothes people wear to be stylish, I prefer character models to look good even if they are ugly (though there has to be made a distinction between intentional and unintentional ugliness), I prefer weapons to look cool and architecture to be breathtaking. However, it has to be within reason. Full-plate armour which shows cleavage is ridiculous, so are swords three quarter the wielder's height (unless they're designed to be used against cavalry, which they never are). Unfortunately, striking the balance is apparently very hard, as in most works people either look like anime cosplayers or bring a tear to the eye. I don't want the choice to be between ugly and reasonable, but that is, quite sadly, the norm. From what I've yet seen considering PE… I don't know. On one hand, one concept art shows fairly realistic armour which doesn't actually look bad, on the other there's that albino elf in what's not a bikini only because it has fur. Ultimately, I hope Eternity will be walking the edge between cool and completely realistic without falling on either side.

Making armour available for members of distinctly non-humanoid races is easy, just go Torment route and make everyone protect themselves with ink. Now that's a badass protection means if there ever was one. On that note, I hope there will be lots of unusual inventory slots. It was simply beautiful when TNO could use replace his eyes. Now, while I doubt that there would be things like that in Eternity, having slots for earrings and tattoos would be nice.

I wanted to give my take on the classes, but then I stopped and thought that there's no point. I enjoy games the dev team made in past for the story, characters and atmosphere. Behind the Great Chinese Wall of Text of Torment I didn't notice the game even had gameplay. So yeah, when PE comes out I'll take the class with which pacifist run makes the most sense and roll with it.

I like villains who aren't really villains, just people whose path had crossed with the hero's. People who could be your allies if only you weren't opposing each other. Like The Transcendent One, who wanted nothing but just live free, or Kreia, who wanted to free the world from tyranny of the Force, or the Master, who wanted the best for humanity. Yes, methods they used weren't the nicest, but then again, the protagonist is not necessarily the messiah, either. The conflict I like is not the conflict of black and white, or even of different shades of gray, but the conflict between blue and orange, purple and brown, one opinion with which you could wholeheartedly agree and another. Using Kreia as an example, if I could support her until the bitter end, I would've done so, because I agree with her on the points she made, at least considering the Force. I expect antagonists in PE to be reasonable, likable, strong as persons, and ideally for the game to give an option to take their side in whatever conflict will arise during the story, like in New Vegas with Caesar.

I didn't make a proposal. I just said what I'd like to see. I don't really think my ideas are worth as much as seriously considering them.

Now, a little rant. While I have faith in the dev team and believe that they can make a masterpiece out of anything, I'm very disappointed with their choice of including elves and dwarfs. Not to mention that it has been done to death decades ago, these 'races' simply aren't distinct enough. Elves are just slender people with pointy years, dwarves are just stocky Norwegians with puffy beards, and even if they would be played differently that still wouldn't change the fact that they're just humans with minor cosmetic changes. Yes, they could be made magical, they could be made long-lived, but the same thing can be done with a group of humans. There just really isn't any sensible reason to take an ethos, give them magical abilities and pointy ears and call them a different species, especially if it comes to the territory when such races can interbreed. If you want magical gypsies, then make magical gypsies instead of breeding entities. What's worse, it could and often does degenerate into planet of hats setup where all members of a race are the same, just according to ethnic stereotypes, like in Dragon Age, when humans have counterparts to various real cultures, but dwarves, elves and especially kossith were all the same when they weren't like humans. It's really like a different race instead of a different species. Now, if they were included as subraces of humanity that would be great, that would be awesome and it'd add diversity without simultaneously taking it away. But as is, it's just sad.

What doesn't stop to continue to amaze me is that people really think dev team would actually consider their ideas. Really, the amount of threads with people proposing various additions and tweaks is astonishing. Yet I would be surprised if a single idea actually made it to development stage, not to mention the game itself. That said, I'd really, really like snake folk. I'm all about snakes. Nagas, lamias, gorgons, I can't have enough of it. I hope there will be some at least as NPCs or in future games of the franchise. Also, insect race, if done well, might turn out to be very, very good, if their alienness is explored and played for all it's worth.

Tropes vs Women

I completely and utterly fail to realize why would anyone want a game from Obsidian to be a sandbox. If I wanted to see NPCs going about their business I'd play Gothic or TES. I play games from Obsidian for the compelling story, interesting characters and worlds which are fun to explore. I don't think having NPCs have schedules will add to the game.

Tropes vs Women
horocaust replied to Qorem's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
There were two damsels in distress if P:T (they were even called precisely that!). One was leading TNO into an ambush by bandits, and the other was a demon in disguise. Mentioning that, I really don't think such cliches would be played straight, if at all. Have faith in the development team. -
How old is everyone?
horocaust replied to qstoffe's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'm 18 and I played KOTOR II when I was 11 and Planescape: Torment when I was 13. Fun times. -
Are you people serious about letting such big parts of the market as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Ex-USSR and other countries where English is uncommon go? It's akin to throwing out money just because they're in Yen rather than dollars. Localization is a must. As for the multiplayer: no way. Fan modules? Sure, but no co-op. It simply diminishes gameplay experience.
