White march = dungeon crawl?
rjshae replied to teenparty's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Since presumably it's an optional side quest to the main campaign, they can probably get away with it being fairly linear. -
I don't know for certain, but I'd like to think so. Statistically it varies quite a bit based on where you live. This study was pretty interesting, for example.

Just about every week I hear another news story about bigotry and think, "it must be in the south". I find I'm rarely incorrect. Cultural inertia, I suppose.

Neil Gaimon's American Gods gets full series order on Starz. So... hurray! Finally. I'm curious to see who they cast as Shadow. -

What are pets for?
rjshae replied to DaWu's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Pets are there so that the designers can say that pets were included. That's about it. -
Western spies forced to pullout : Snowden to blame
rjshae replied to BruceVC's topic in Way Off-Topic
That's like shooting yourself in the foot and so discovering that your gun still doesn't have enough hitting power because your foot didn't come off. The primary benefit of Snowden's activities went directly to states with low standards for personal liberty. He's an intelligent fool. -
What's on the idiot box Part 4 (or something)
rjshae replied to LadyCrimson's topic in Way Off-Topic
Did anybody catch the premiere of Whispers? It's a sci-fi series on ABC about children being contacted by a mysterious invisible entity; possibly an alien. I wasn't sure about it at first, but I think it has some potential. -
I think we should have a separate WTF count to cover WOT posts...

Chris Avallone left Obsidian
rjshae replied to GrayAngel's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Well a change can be good for the creative juices, and this will leave a slot open for new blood in Obsidian. Hopefully it'll work out well for everybody concerned. -
Is it snipe hunting season already?

If they follow the usual trend of getting a funding bump at the end, they'll probably make it.

Listening to a well-crafted piece played by skilled and creative musicians Extra hard apple cider Pulling out a victory by the home side at the end of a hard-fought game Creating a visually appealing 3D model Hiking to an alpine lake on a summer's day up where the air is thin and crisp Steaming hot chimichangas Solving a difficult and complex problem Watching a good comedian do his act Wisps of clouds clinging to the wooded hills on a cool autumn morning The smile of a beautiful and intelligent woman Feeling sharp after a good night's sleep Being drawn into a good computer game Getting together with the family on Christmas day Finding out that somebody I've just met is honest and honorable Staring up at the stars by a fire after the Sun has fallen

Update #98: The Bard's Tale IV and Update 1.06
rjshae replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Not sure. I don't know that specific issue. Was it happening in 1.05? If so, it may still be in there. Thank you for responding. Unfortunately, on my play through I was well past that point when 1.05 was released, so I don't know. But I haven't seen it listed in the fixes. It was mentioned here and here, among others.- 23 replies

Update #98: The Bard's Tale IV and Update 1.06
rjshae replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Great. I'll just ask this again, since I never got an answer the previous times: is the bug with the Ondra's Gift lighthouse door fixed? The one where it blocks your progress to the second floor? Thank you.- 23 replies

Gary Gygax described role-playing as a group, cooperative experience. Single player CRPGs are at best a sub par, perhaps even mediocre simulation of that interaction. Most of what has been debated is the relative effectiveness of that simulation. "When AI approximates Machine Intelligence, then many online and computer-run RPGs will move toward actual RPG activity. Nonetheless, that will not replace the experience of 'being there,' any more than seeing a theatrical motion picture can replace the stage play." -- Gygax.

I like what I've seen thus far, and I'm looking forward to the release. Naysayers => ignored.

The modern education system creates a type of class-based approach just from the fact that it takes 4-7 years to get really good at a subject. That type of dependency should be enough to differentiate sci-fi characters, while still allowing some crossover skills that don't require lengthy training to reach a suitable level of proficiency. After that it's mostly a matter of getting rid of the word 'class', and replacing it with, say, 'career'.

It might be interesting to use an Avatar-like approach; start with a diverse team of body pilots with various sci-fi like skills, then stealthily interact with the universe through remotely-controlled bodies. This would allow you to operate in a diverse range of locales as well as allowing you to pass yourself off a natives. As the game goes along, you can acquire new technology that allows you to build and equip better avatars. The goal becomes not to avoid getting killed, but to succeed in your missions even in the face of avatar losses. As long as just one avatar survives to achieve the mission purpose, then you succeed.
