A book that talks about the Ancient Obsidian Order and its many members throughout the ages, then goes on to catalogue stupid ways that some of them died from. Though, modding tools are not in my priority wish list, perhaps we can add something like this, if third party programs allow it close after launch.

There could be for example a fatique system and on low fatique you are hindered (you move slower or you don't hit as well) on combat but not as useless what you would be if your combat skill resources were null. That's what I was thinking as well. The reason I brought the subject up, is that we don't know yet if there will be a fatigue, or similar, system.

The only problem I see, and would like more explanation on, is what Tim Cain said about what non-combat skills would cost to use. He gave an example with Mana and mining, as in mining not costing any mana. But shouldn't generally there be a penalty for using a skill that should tire a person and then entering combat without some "rest"? We don't yet know the full details of how non-combat, combat, and stats and feats will play out yet of course, so I might worry about nothing, but I would like to learn how that would work.

Tropes vs Women
kenup replied to Qorem's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah, bring Anita Sarkesian here. We really had need for a stereotypical feminist(that even other gamer feminists and other females dislike) that finds fault where there isn't. -
But you could be even better at fitness if you never took the time away from physical training to go learn physics. There are some teenaged girls somewhere who are really good at calculus. There are also some teenaged girls who are Olympic gymnasts. I'm fairly confident that those two groups don't overlap; the gymnasts don't have time to excel at calculus. You can only get so far. And over exerting yourself, will have negative effects. Training physically for too many hours per day, every day, will not help. Dividing that time between keeping yourself fit and your college studies for example will be good for both mind and body. Teen years are not the last years in which you can improve yourself. And what someone wishes to showcase themselves as, or work as, doesn't take away other skills/talents. And I like how you ignored the rest of my post about still getting faster at the top or better at something, if you solely focus on that. But a police man, doesn't have to forget how to write poetry(non-combat) as his hobby in order to learn to shoot straight(combat).

That's really masohistic. I mean, I do not like being a master of all, but what you describe is pretty much a warrior or mage only class choice. Perhaps Rogue too at most. Even in real life, you can be good at more than one thing. Especially if one has to do with fitness(weapon skills ingame) and the other with, say physics or programming(mental skills). I'm sure base attributes will also matter on how much versatility you can have. Not to mention, focusing on one combat and one non-combat thing, will still get you faster or further at that one thing.

Completely agree with the OP. The TES way of leveling up is very, very broken. I "lost" ten levels because Alchemy was leveling me up and didn't have the equipment to much the new level scaled creatures; that only in Skyrim. But the real problem is that to be balanced or max the skills you want, you have to grind a lot(on top of min-maxing all the time). It doesn't support alternate play styles.

Story vs Choice
kenup replied to slopesandsam's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Thie "problem" with choices vs story can easily be fixed. Most choices big or small, should take effect within the story, some instantly, some later and only the most important take effect on the over arching plot and ending(s). After that, the problem comes if you want a story that expands through multiple games; due to variables pilling up. At that point you have to choose which ones are important enough to show up and at what extent. I personally like fixed characters(Nameless One, Mike Thorton, Gerald), thus giving more focus on the story and meaningfull choices(if few) within the plot, as long as the writters and game designers are up to it. But I like creating my own characters as well, though that seems to drop the quality of the plot and choices in the later years, NV excluded, and hopefully/thankfully that won't be the case with PE. And going half way(Shepard, Hawke) with the current technology doesn't seem to be a good Idea. -
Urgency: Please Have It
kenup replied to Zombra's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
This. I don't understand why people want to take their time with everything and use roleplaying as a reason. Isn't roleplaying about choices and consequences? You are a mage with high intelligence and low strength? you can cast spells, but can't pick up that warhammer and run around like a boss caring it. The opposite is true for the big dump fighter character. Shouldn't the same apply to quests? Wasn't that enough of a problem with skyrim(and previous Elder Scrolls games)? So after the first TG quest you learn that the bad guy plans to take a certain treasure. But nothing happens if you wait for even years(so to speak I didn't wait that much) in game. And even near the end, where your allies tell you that they will wait for you at the place you go to confront the guy. They will wait and wait and wait, even if you completely forgot about them. And the most annoying guy in the fighters guild will wait for you to become a warewolf indefinitely. He or his assistant never go out of that 10 square meter cave for a drink or food or even just to take a walk! And these are only a few examples. Story telling and common sense might tell you that it's urgent to do something. But shouldn't the same storytelling principle show you why it is/was urgent to do something? Lastly don't go saying that you won't be able to do everything in a game. Nobody said you have to finish the MQ in 5 hours. If the main plot has cases where it needs you to be quick on your toes, I'm sure it will give us a reasonable amount of things that we will HAVE TO DO during that limited time. And there will certainly be cases in which you can relax and take your time. And no clocks need to show up. Just the log pre-failure: "You have to do this and that bla bla bla. (You have a limited amount of time)/(You got to be quick)". And after that just a "You didn't get there in time". No timers no nothing. -
Voiced NPCs
kenup replied to Gezzas's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
No voice acting! Unless the main hero is fixed, like Gerald or Mike Thorton. I hate always hearing "You that!" and "You this" or whatever. Going half way is never good, unless obsidian hides some futuristic text to voice programme that can replace voice actors and recognize custom text/names.- 91 replies

Gameplay Mechanics of Armor
kenup replied to Chunkyman's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Damage Threshold worked well, so that's cool. Armour requirements should only when it makes absolute sense i.e. no robes(or whatever) restricted by faction(replacing alignment) or class. On the other hand heavy armour should require some strength and maybe feat(s), while a strongly enchanted armour or clothing may or may not require some mental/spiritual/mana/feat(s) stat. And 100% behind multi-piece armour. -
It's too obvious. If someone gets trolled by this..... well I don't know what to say. Unless the trolling the author wants, occurs when someone points out that it's obvious. In which case I just got trolled!

A fallen "good" god or relative to one(without them being in god mode since the're fallen), that you can guide either to the right path, which might not even be the god's path, or get them further down the devil's highway. IF they have knowledge that the mortals shouldn't possess, they don't share it until they think you are ready or other sources give it to you. By fallen, I don't mean EVIL, though they might have a tendency to see mortals as pathetic and be a jerk to them, just that he did something that disgraced him/her to the others of his kind, and was stripped of his/her place. (S)He might be something like an anti-villain, which can be guided either way(with actions and words) or stay the same. On the other hand a (Arch-)devil/demon might also work. Similar to the above, except he is like a dark anti-hero, and still far from "good" when you might them. They are just too compassionate for the other of his/her kind. And definitely not Always Chaotic Evil.

Killing companions
kenup replied to Sarog's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
From what I gather, the only alignment that would outright kill a companion for being "evil" is Lawful Good Stupid. Neutral good might try to redeem them and chaotic might not care as long as it doesn't hinder them doing good(the chaotic way), unless there is no other way to resolve a situation, or outright betray them. No "good" companion would approve of just killing someone who assists you, regardless of alignment. -
Random stats or Bought Stats?
kenup replied to PsychoBlonde's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Point buy. I like tinkering stats, but random rolls will make it way too time consuming.
