Question: Temple of Eothas
DCParry replied to DCParry's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
There are shadows and shades in there. Shades are the tougher ones and can summon one shadow. Ah, thank ye both. I guess I will head off and come back. With fire. -
Question: Temple of Eothas
DCParry posted a topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
So, I am wandering through the Temple with my party of three on Hard (probably a tough proposition, but I have been fine for the most part). I have made it to level 2, I find a room, 3 shadows, I begin picking them off even through they have crepuscular chubbies for Aloth. I get to a point where two teleport, and I see they are using the spell Mass Teleport in the combat window. Instead of teleporting, they seem to duplicate. That is, they stay in the same place, but two appear spontaneously next to Aloth. Is this intended or a bug? -
Any streamer up already?

Wait, isn't the future tense, but its very nature, imperfect? I suppose then it would be redundant. His phrasing had more if a future perfect vibe to me. I want to experience PoE in more of an Aorist sense, a timeless moment that holds true for all cases. -
After you finish a game or two, I suggest picking up the Long War mod, adds a lot of depth, changes the game from a couple days to a couple weeks. I wouldn't say it is inherently better, but it does add a nice fresh twist to game. EDIT - Haha, I am a Johnny Come Lately on the comment there after Darkpriest.

Update #89: Backer Rewards
DCParry replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
There should have been a place to fill out your address in the backer portal when you were selecting all of your options (even if all you are getting is the thank you card). You have a silver badge, so I assume you did it. If you need help, contact support on the backer site to check with us about your address on file. So Adam, no word on if there will be a digital version of the collector's book available for purchase? Or, dare I say it, a kindle edition! ;-)- 95 replies

Update #89: Backer Rewards
DCParry replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Quick question - Is there ever going to be a digital only version of the Collector's Book from Dark Horse? I normally would definitely buy the physical version, but living in Singapore both delivery and (more importantly) long term storage of books can be an issue (as my poor, barely avoiding mildew, Lewis and Short can attest). I will probably go ahead get a physical copy if that is the only option. EDIT - More specific, not talking about the "edition" but the super awesome Collector's Guide Book.- 95 replies

Actually you are attributing high level reasoning to monsters here, and it make no sense. I doubt a creature would continue chewing on my unconscious body while the monk is pummeling on its head. Also, immersion argument in a CRPG is the last bastion of the desperate. If you think it is lame, just remove any character that drops unconscious. Problem solved and your immersion is preserved.

My wife and I recently had the good fortune of having our twins (one boy and one girl) born very healthy and happy. As anyone with newborns know, this can cut into your gaming time, and I wanted to give PoE two huge kudos. First, I can play it one handed! After the freaking train wreck of DAI, I have renewed respect and love for the control scheme of PoE. Second, the current build, for me, is SUPER STABLE. I left it running for like 18 hours (feedings, some spit up, some actual sleep, and I kinda forgot I was fighting the spider queen), paused, in the middle of combat, and I picked up right away with no glitches. I am no technical wiz, but this sort of stability seems rare today, and I applaud those who were working under the hood to make this happen.

A bit concerned about the promise of a patch a week
DCParry replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
The current rate of patches is probably a little bit slow, but I also think that a patch every week might be a bit too quick. inXile promised weekly patches for Wasteland 2 during the beta but were unable to achieve it because the studio/team was simply not built for that quick of a turnover. You guys likely have a larger in house team than they did (I guess?) and have been adding extra programmers over the last few months (nice to hear that Dan Spitzley is on the team ). You guys might be able to handle a patch a week, but is a patch a week worth it ? The beta backers are not on the project full time, and while many people are usually pretty keen on a patch day, it's because the wait for the patch was long and people have been hanging out for it. I have a feeling that a patch a week will kill many people's enthusiasm and result in less overall testing being done, especially when the smaller patches will not be containing 'big' changes like the last few have. Most of the bug reports come in the first week of the new patch, particularly in the first few days, and then bug reports slow down. Suggestions/new threads tend to come after a few days/bit longer as people have had a chance to thoroughly play the new version and formulate an opinion. I think every two weeks would probably be more ideal, it would allow you enough time to get in moderate fixes, it gives more of the backer base time to get to try the build and it at least allows for some anticipation. There are a lot of people that are simply jumping into the new patch for an hour or two and posting about it on the forums, and this is reflected in the hours logged on their steam profile. I don't know if a patch a week gives people enough time to fully test the patch - particularly with stuff like changes to ability and spell mechanics, it's very hard to go through all the classes in a week and respond to the changes, particularly when the changes are not documented (as they were not in the last patch). I think this could end up promoting less 'thorough' testing overall. I might be wrong, but I thought I'd post my concerns anyway. it's not our job to test for them. if we find bugs and report our experiences that should be enough. They also can but -likely wont- change everything in the beta every week. For completionists like you, you can just test the parts that have been changed. That would require the devs to mention what changes they've made. I think one week might be a little ambitious because of the overhead time it takes to upload a patch and obsidian's "need to appease the backers" but a two weeker or a one and a half week per update shouldn't be too bad. Of course, then one wonders what the point of such rapid patches actually is. To me, it feels like any sort of plan that Obsidian had has gone out the window. Hopefully I am wrong. -
Well, we have nothing else to rely on right now. A rational man makes do with what he has, not with what he wants. He ends up getting what he wants as a result. The irrational man however, does the other way round and loses what he had as well. Or, we can understand the context of the backer beta as it was presented to us.

To boil it down, if XP is awarded for the mere act of killing things, then not killing everything you come across is leaving money on the table, and a sub optimal playing style, which leads to greater development difficulties. Do the devs balance for characters who killed every breathing creature in the game, or do they just balance for a lower, arbitrary amount of slaughter? Fpr the former, then it is necessary to seek out all new life, and new civilizations, and spatter their blood/ichor/ooze all over in order to proceed in the game. If they choose the later, then those characters who did in fact depopulate the countryside could very well trivialize the elder game content because they are so far ahead of the learning curve. It is perfectly fine to prefer to kill XP, but it is disingenuous to act like it is a simple easy thing to balance or fix. The whole trash encounter mentality seems to be a product of cooperative online play where the main goal is to maximize the return on your effort (this is my impression, the first time I heard the term was in 1992 I think while playing Dark Castle MUD; also the first time I heard the term chode, which I think needs to be brought back). I still think it is a mistake to relay too heavily on the beta encounter design to extrapolate larger design philosophies. The beta is an extremely small sample that is not even part of the main path.

Ya, more design by committee. Nothing can wrong here!

Hell, why not, they seem to be changing so many things why not change a fundamental design decision as well. I also like how people can't be bothered to do the most cursory search of the forum for topics before they post.

Delayed to early 2015
DCParry replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
And all these things are a surprise? These seems to be a rather extensive list of additions/changes at a state where we were told the game was feature locked quite a bit ago. EDIT - Just read Josh's addendum. I am still quite surprised at the level of change for which you are aiming. I understand, but I am not particularly encouraged at this point. Hopefully I am wrong. -
List of Prios to Fix until the Early 2015 Release
DCParry replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I'm glad they've got their heads down, if the developers answered every open challenge to them they'd never be out of this damn forum. If they actually had their head downs and focused, then I doubt there would have been ANOTHER delay. -
List of Prios to Fix until the Early 2015 Release
DCParry replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I have no idea what exactly they intend to do with this extra time. If the listen to all the suggestions, they will redesign/over-design systems which they had already finished (at least conceptually). If they mismanaged their timetable to such an extent so far, I don't see what good is truly going to emerge at the end of listening to players tread over the exact. same. ground. for an additional 3-6 months (unless they delay it again, which at this point doesn't seem unlikely). My impression of the backer beta (built partly on Obsidian's rationale for its design) is that it is such a minuscule slice that it can barely be called representative of the game. I fail to see how arguing about beetle encounters ad naseum is truly going to help.
