"No Bad Builds" a failure in practice?
Shadenuat replied to SergioCQH's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Huh, so what is its' thing? Like 4th, but trying to appeal to 3rd fans? It's a "Pathfinder won" edition, at least from reading basic rules. A cleaned and groomed 3d edition. It would have worked well for PoE I think actually, since they fixed many things that people dislike on first glance - there are no "empty" levels (every level you either get a stat, or skill, or a spell), Fighters got pumped a lot (like, +half a dozen of new standard abilities), Rogues became ultimate skill-bots and also got pumped a lot, and so on. -
IGN Article about PoE.

Pale Justice was the better of them I think and had the coolest story. -
Obsidian is known to support their companion personalities with interesting character concepts and various mechanical tweaks (kotor 2, motb), and while sometimes it did make me p. mad, I still had control over their leveling. Plus, Sawyer is all mad about his new cool system where all classes will be useful, where you will be able to play party of 6 rogues, and everyone can wear any items. If that's the case then players would probably be able to fit companions for multiple roles. And munchkins could just go with Hall of Heroes. From all the leaks it also seems like stats actually don't matter that much, like there won't be a difference in stats as big as for STR 10 to STR 18/00.

I don't care for boobs talk since they fixed Cadegund's art and are applying moderation to their style everywhere. Bitching about it more would be petty.- 340 replies

I backed PoE because I know for a fact that Obsidian can write great characters and clever stories, and are consistent in their focus on non linear storytelling and true to tabletop story and sometimes, gameplay design. Their only obligation is to continue to be good at what they have been always good at for years of their studio's existence. If they finally manage to make a game with good combat it would be a plus of course.- 340 replies

Update #77: Art in Alpha

As long as armor looks practical enough, I can forgive some exaggeration to help players distinguish units from one another on the battlefield.- 338 replies

Update #77: Art in Alpha
Shadenuat replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Making funny "roman" straps on hips out of metal seems like a waste of material. They just ask for a spear thrust or an arrow to go there. New areas look fantastic.- 338 replies

Tomes are lame
Shadenuat replied to Mr Moonlight's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Here, my dear magical colleagues, fans of pointy hats, old dusty tomes and scrolls, cauldrons and wands; my fans of Merlin, and Circe, and Medea; carriers of pouches of ingredients, and pentacles and bat **** (never leave home without some bat ****, copper wire and a silver bell), you can see our natural enemy in it's habitat. It's perception of magical was sadly altered by sorcerors, rogues, WoW and it's clones and mr. Freeze from that movie which shouldn't be mentioned. Please study carefully and remember - no matter how many ice bolts those people have, you can always rely on your clever choice of feats and a- 88 replies

What is even a GM sucker punch? Because OP definition can't work since GM probably won't give you second, third and fourth time to beat his encounter. And then it all just escalated to "hard counters again". I assume what Josh wants is to player be able to predict and understand logical consequences for possible tactical mistakes. But to do that you just need a) Symmetrical combat system, where imba abilities happen only rarely from sources like powerful magical creatures; b) Good (ToEE, Knights of the Chalice) level of in-game documentation. Also, turn-based combat would help since it makes players value positioning and reading combat log more, but eh. If we're talking about shocking encounters however, they also have value. As Spoony said in one of his videos, without some suffering and dark parts of adventuring, there can't be a sense of heroics. So it's nice to face something totally overpowering once in a while, die and re-think your strategy. P.S. I'd also like to thank Mr. Magniloquent for his good posts and defending BG magic system.

Update #76: Music in Pillars of Eternity
Shadenuat replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
The pauses between instruments are too many and too long, so it kinda goes nowhere and lacks that solid feel I used to have when listening to music in good RPG's. Maybe environmental effects would help music to stand out more.- 221 replies

Are all undead intelligent then, a-la Torment? How will you be able to raise your own with spells, or you won't?

OP complains that can't handle an RPG because real life, kids and effort Spends hours upon hours of time on writing and reading walls of texts about the same RPG "No spark" indeed. I don't see how your system is much different. If you dump WIS in 3d, you suffer, if you get more, you benefit. And benefits from stats like INT/CHA for non standard classes were a privilege of prestiges in 3d. You got rid of CHA (or rather, added a general combat bonus to it), well, it always was a dump stat in IE, so that's something. But I doubt pumping stat which "adds more time to effects" in your game would make a better fighter than a STR/DEX/CON based one, no?

Update #70: New Year Project Update

While it's fun when setting has some work on it's unique languages, I think it's characters themselves who should speak them, not the interface, unless we never ever know what the name of paladin's order means.- 491 replies

Update #63: Stronghold!
Shadenuat replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Should have placed his face onto The Tarantian newspaper instead "Tim gets his stronghold assaulted looses tactical stock of chocolate bars but his hold remains strong" EXTRA price 2 coins well update is awesome, but it would be good to see some concept art of what are we going to get there. is that a castle, or a tower, or a small hamlet? I am curious.- 455 replies

Strength - fortitude save, physical damage and hit points; Dexterity - dodge, chance to hit, chance to critical for physical attacks, chance to hit with touch and ray based magic, reflex saves; Intelligence - skill points (everyone wants that), chance to critical with any attack, Wisdom/Will - will save, power of spells and soul based magic-like abilities. Something like that I can live with, but no step further into "press power for more power".

RPG Codex Josh Sawyer Q&A
Shadenuat replied to Infinitron's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I am playing a "fighter with wisdom and charisma" now in IWD2, called a paladin. 20 CHA for +5 saves, one of the best builds. And the most broken build in BG2 was fighter/wizard with high STR&INT. All types of characters won if they had high DEX and CON. Even some STR did't hurt for casters like clerics. There's a ton of builds where any stat is useful in 3d edition of D&D. All without "raise power to get +damage for everything".
