Why Pistol is two hand?
Karkarov replied to djphong's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Come now, surely you realize that amulet would be completely gaudy paired with that necklace, and the luxurious fur trim of your cloak would simply get snagged on both and cover them up anyway. You must consider the fashion in these things. -
IEMod fork, new modding framework
Karkarov replied to Springwight's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Modding (Spoiler Warning!)
I extend my sincere condolences. Point is well made though, lets have some patience people! Burn out on this project is a real thing so lets let those working on it pace themselves and take their time. -
Truth is all weapons are good and can be super effective if put in the hands of a character with the right build to use them. That said.... uh yeah that ^. Estocs are great overall weapons due to their strong DR bypass and the piercing damage type which can snake by a lot of DR out there from the get go. Most of the time if you think about enemies logically though it is clear what will work well. For forest lurkers... well they are big mounds of walking plant. So kill it with fire, or in a pinch slashing weapons. Even better.... slashing weapons with fire enchants.

Why Pistol is two hand?
Karkarov replied to djphong's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Uh to answer what the other guys aren't actually saying clearly.... Eternity guns are still low tech, which means they are hand loaded flintlock style guns that have to have powder and iron ball bullet loaded by hand for every shot. Even for a pistol this takes two hands, thus pistols are two handed weapons. -
Pillars of balancing
Karkarov replied to brindle88's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah I seriously hope the "if" in this sentence is just a red herring. I would love to see a Pillars 2 and if it needs to go to kickstarter for funding you just shoot me the link the day it goes live. I and many others will be happy to put our money where our mouth is once more. -
Personally I don't really agree with much of what Vicarius has posted but I have to chime in here. "The Art of War" has nothing to do with martial skill, or swords. If you strip it down to what it is, it is a set of rules and strategies that define how best to use the resources at your disposal to achieve success. Whether those resources are a mob of guys with swords, an MMA fighter going for a title win, or a team of lawyers trying to win a court case the rules can still apply. So Sun Tzu was not "teaching you how to swing a sword" he was simply teaching "how to win" regardless of the actual form of the battle.

Hmmm my two cents. Eder is the closest thing this game has to a Carth Onasi from KotOR or a Allister (minus the Mary Sue) from DA:O. That should tell you everything you need to know, but of all the NPC companions he is really the only must have in my opinion. He is the "right hand man" character. Aloth is goofy as hell but a nice guy. I never felt he was aloof just a little socially awkward, he is sort of like a wannbe Eder only he casts spells. He also ties well into the story and gets along okay with everyone except the two people no one gets along with ;p Sagani is basically the "mother" character who only cares about duty, taking care of others, and doing whats right. She is a nice person and gets a long well with most. Like most companions her best moments are tied to Eder. Pallegina is getting a bad wrap in this thread for some reason? She is a little haughty (she is a paladin ???) and stand offish with those who offend her or her morals. That said she is loyal to a fault, gets on fine with most, and is never rude or insulting to the main character. She isn't "super warm" but she is polite and as friendly as someone in her position is ever going to be. She also never bosses you around beyond asking you to assist her with one task. Grieving Mother.... uh well. She is boring as hell and basically one dimensional. She has almost no personality at all, doesn't really get a long with anyone, and most of the time the other party members barely even notice her there. She is not a jerk or a bad person, she is even loyal to you to a fault, but she is never friendly, never warm, and party interaction wise may as well not even be there for various reasons I won't discuss. Kana Rua.... Kana is a nice enough guy with a sense of humor I suppose... but he is also really naive, thinks he is smarter than he actually is, basically he is a slightly less annoying Aerie from BG2 only not female. He isn't a bad guy or anything but I never found his banter that interesting and he is sort of annoying. Then there is the other guys.... Durance is a jerk. There is no way of saying anything else. He will intentionally offend, insult, and demean just about everyone including you. He hates pretty much everyone including his god and himself and he isn't insane but I would liken him to a mafia hitman in moral view. Yes he has some funny banters, but only cause he is the butt of someone elses joke. None of the companions actually likes him for good reason. Don't buy the nonsense others posted either, there is no alignment system in this game but if there was Durance would DEFINITELY fall in the evil spectrum. Hiravias.... well.... he isn't a "bad" person, but he is crude, offensive, and sort of a douche. Basically in real life terms imagine a neckbeard fedora wearer who thinks Laura Croft is a great female character because she has big ****. If that sounds like something you would like hanging out with bring him along, honestly I left him in the stronghold and never looked back.

Gairnulf is right. All stats are used at different points for different checks and the "stat based" dialogue checks don't always lead to superior results or even results you couldn't have gotten with the non stat based choices. You are literally stressing about a non issue. This may be your problem. Also this bears repeating.

The Custom Portraits Thread
Karkarov replied to Namutree's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Very nice! The community owes a lot to you and the few other artists out there who have made a real effort to create portraits that are high quality, match the art style of eternity, and fit the cultures of the game. -
White March 2 question
Karkarov replied to maglalosus's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah I am holding off on my new run through as well until the whole White March is there to play not just half of it. Hopefully it won't be too much longer. -
Amegani's Pillars Portraits
Karkarov replied to Amegani's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Modding (Spoiler Warning!)
Actually it really does look a bit like Ares, I thought it pretty much before even reading the post. The hair is a bit much for me, but it is very good portrait and really does fit perfectly with the stock ones as well. Very nice work again, really like the time lapse too. -
Amegani's Pillars Portraits

Good work, slightly different from the style used by the stock Portraits but close enough that it fits okay. More fan made portraits is always cool, especially when original and high quality, kudos! -
Pillars of balancing
Karkarov replied to brindle88's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I am going to have to go with no on this one. For OP I will be a nice guy though and throw something out there. Obsidian has in the past publicly stated how they like to do balancing. Basically they like to overtune things so they are intentionally too strong, then bring them down from there. Why? Because they find for them it just works better this way and leads to a more consistent result. This is why you don't see abilities getting buffed too often because everything started a little stronger than they originally intended to begin with. Also just from my personal experience in "**** loads of games and mmo's tm all rights reserved" buffing is a helluva lot harder to do right than nerfing, and this is why most people do it that way. -
Three things. This sounds sort of like a bug so I suggest posting it in bugs. I am not sure it is the actual bounty target who has the bow and not just a member of their group. Lastly, this is the no spoiler forum so lets try to not tell people who haven't played the game yet or for some reason haven't done the bounty missions where to find cool powerful bows okay?

Torm makes a good point but I think it is mostly to piss off people and start retarted transphobic flame wars in the forums. -
Salty Mast scenes fade to black?
Karkarov replied to luzarius's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Yeah the Gypsy Camp was off just a bit east of the road. North of Trinsinic as I recall (sp). It is totally optional though, you can never talk to them at all or just decline the option. -
Observation....
Karkarov replied to Oralaina's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
There was a poll way back after the kickstarter ended. Of the near 100 or so people who took it most were over 25. Like 80+%. Considering the game has how been out for some time only the die hards still frequent the boards so I imagine the average age is even higher now. -
Salty Mast scenes fade to black?
Karkarov replied to luzarius's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Hate to bust you on this one but the avatar could have sex as early as Ultima 6: The False Prophet. There is a gypsy lady who takes money for that sort of thing. If you have Dupre in the party he will even go on a rant at you over it. Unfortunately for Luzarius.... it was a fade to black -
Question 1: Does it matter who I send? No not really. Question 2: Is the exp awarded to everyone? Yes, all exp awards pretty much go to everyone. People not in your party I think get exp at a percentage though, so obviously those in your party will level faster since they get full exp from everything.

Chris Avellone
Karkarov replied to Anaeme's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Nor should we... Couldn't have said it better myself. Whatever it was it is a private affair between him and his former employers, it is none of our business, and unless he wants to share we will never know. As an aside, a professional like him probably would never want to share that info either as he would know how bad a form it would be to do so. -
Yay! Chris Avellone working on Divinity OS 2
Karkarov replied to rheingold's topic in Computer and Console
Yeah I kinda gotta side with Pole, Kreia was an annoying preachy know it all that spent most of the game talking down to you despite the fact that in many points of the game you bailed her out. She even talks trash about Revan and Malak at multiple points, I figure because they had the balls to face the real sith while she hid in a hole and tried to talk people to death. I wasn't shocked her disciples betrayed her, I sure didn't mind dropping her like a bad habit at the end.
