Karkarov replied to Brimsurfer's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Wow, wow, wow! I don't know where you are from, but i can tell you're using some particular point of view as a general argument. As a french guy i can't let this slip lol. I've several good friends, and there is no one i could ever bring to Mc Donald's. And the people i know i can, are actually more interested in the "convenient" side of McDonalds. What all the people i know really want here is "good, gourmet food", not ****ty Mc Donald's... People actually desire hamburgers? Well, sometimes it's true. But McDonald's? No. McDonald's is a default choice. We have many alternatives here (even for hamburgers). Last time i ate burgers, it was "foie gras, fig jam, steak", all handmade by proper crafstmen of my hometown. As i said, Mc Do is only the convenient option young people usually chose. Not the one people crave for. Definitely. And it may be the same about writting. I didn't like the writting style of Tolkienn, but i quite like the story he told in his books. Thanks for your response. I let it go because I didn't want to open the door on taking the thread totally off topic but I can't stand aside and not go "Yeah pretty much". There are hundreds of industries where the dominant seller is not a quality product, it is just the cheaper one and often times also more convenient. -

Not sure what authors you mean there, also don't confuse popularity with quality. For example Deadpool is breaking all sorts of records as a movie.... However, if someone told me it was a better movie than say last years Revenant, which it clearly outsold already, I would call them an idiot. Because they would be one. Or do you think McDonalds is the greatest restaurant in the world? I mean it sells more than almost any other so it must be the best .... right? -

I only like your post cause well, this sentence I quoted is correct. In modern writing, especially in the professional world, concise writing is stressed to an extreme extent. Maybe a little too much, but it is what it is. Obsidian definitely does not subscribe to the idea of concise writing though, whether that is a bad thing or not in the world of fictional fantasy game writing is a matter of opinion. -

I would agree Durance gets a little heavy. I don't think Grieving Mother is that bad but nothing she has to say is particularly gripping. They both share one major problem and that is they love to reiterate things they previously said, or tweak some basic point they made before and just restate it in a minutely different way. It can get pretty redundant, especially with GM. -

Eternity has fewer written lines than BG2 or PST, pretty sure Obsidian has confirmed this. Thank god too, you can't go to the toilet in Torment without getting a 3 paragraph description of what the door knob you had to open to get in the bathroom looks like. -
Fairly confident Larian built their own engine or highly modified an existing one. Not sure they would even be willing to share it from the get go. Also guys, engines are just design tools really. Think of it like chess, your engine says you can move your bishop like this but not like that. It doesn't dictate what your Bishop has to look like. Obsidian could have gotten similar graphics to what you see in Divinity Original Sin with Unity 5 no problem, the graphics are what they are because that is the style Obsidian chose.

You realize this is the no spoiler forum right? -
Ask and ye shall receive. I can't tell you how to extract the images from the game files themselves but a quick trigger finger, knowing how the menu's work, and good capture software can get it done in a pinch. It won't be animated, but the bg's of eternity are not animated to begin with. The snow is just a in game effect.

Third Expansion
Karkarov replied to cwi87's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Dragons (lol especially in D&D) were never of one power level. I remember one campaign where we killed dragons here and there and we were all level 10ish or so. All of them aren't made equal though and there was one dragon in that campaign we actually fled from more than once because we knew we couldn't beat that one. So there could be plenty of dragons far nastier out there than the Adra Dragon. It isn't like there isn't "dragon hunters" in Eternity or anything guys, killing dragons is obviously not that insane a concept in this world. As for legendary wizards with spells named after them. Having a spell named after you doesn't mean you are a total bad ass, it just means you are really good at inventing spells that people like. Again look at the Forgotten Realms from D&D. There were plenty of mages in that world who were not level 20 + / gods were afraid of them bad asses that had spells named after them. Also I argue that no the things you do in Eternity are not that big a deal, much more similar to BG1 than 2. You are involved tangentially in some political intrigue, but you are not the center of it or the force driving it. Yes your actions when you take out Thaos have a big effect on the Dyrwood itself... but are you really comparing that to the possible "...and then you became a god" ending from Throne of Bhaal? Those two things don't really seem in the same league. Remember Dyrwood is a backwater country, it is considered frontier, and only recently won it's Independence. Nothing you did in Eternity "changed the course of world history". All that aside, do I think level 20 will be some "middle level", no not really. But there is certainly room to push max level to 30 without stretching anything unreasonably. -
Quoting for the truth!!! TRUTH!!! Seriously you guys are over stating this. If you care about story and lore, go with the story companions. People have SOLOD path of the damned, you can certainly clear it with a party of companion characters regardless of your ability to change their stats or make Kana not summon skeletons. If you care more about total party control and min maxing.... just hire adventurers at the inn. That is literally what they are there for.

IEMod fork, new modding framework
Karkarov replied to Springwight's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Modding (Spoiler Warning!)
Bester abandoned the IE mod a long time ago, he never even played the commercial non beta release of Eternity. Springwight is the most recent person working on the mod so best bet is trying to contact him. -
Prisoners still escape?
Karkarov replied to bmardiney's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
LOL I guess I have gotten really lucky in my games. Even in the original release I have never had a prisoner escape, or even try to. -
Don't get me wrong, the default Eternity UI is solid, and more than functional. It's problem is it is a little... plain I guess for some, has sort of a wishy washy color/highlight on characters, at high res like 4k you can't hide the chat box, the top of the UI gets lighter which makes it blend with the background in many cases, and so on. Just niggling things nothing crazy.
-
As probably the only person who was involved in it that is actually still active on this forum I have to ask.... What did you dislike about it so much? It was very modular, you could use as many, or as few, of it it's features as you wanted. All I used was the autosave functions, the fast sneak, and the UI (go fig).
-
Don't worry, with all those changes you listed, you'll basically be throwing an unlimited number of spells around every milisecond, so it's pretty hard to die anyway! Anyway, from memory, IE does let you disable camping supplies, and to turn all per-rests into per-encs, but I don't think 3) and 4) are possible. Someone who's actually used those features may have more accurate information. Hey there is story time mode now! You won't have to worry about camping supplies cause the game is so easy you never need to rest anyway!

Yeah these days I play on a 4k monitor and there are stand out obvious problems with the UI at 4k. Also I really like that IE Mod UI, I wonder why.......? So I am the rare guy that doesn't care about any aspect of the IE Mod other than the UI itself. I don't have any issues playing the game by it's normal mechanics and don't think the absence of a walking mode or npc selection circles is a really big deal.

Third Expansion
Karkarov replied to cwi87's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I would also like to add here that this isn't D&D, level 16 doesn't necessarily have to be "high level" in the world of Eternity it could be 20 is a "middle" level if Obsidian designs it right. -
Well I won't give you my "unfiltered" opinion of Planescape: Torment. I will sum it up by saying it was not faithful to the source material it was based on (the Planescape campaign setting), many of it's design decisions seemed to be based on being "witty" and "anti trope" not on actually being good design decisions, and the overall way the game was played was skewed to force a specific stat, class, and playstyle and if you didn't follow that skew you got sub optimal game experience all the way around. Also the sword comment is there for a specific reason. There are literally no swords in Planescape: Torment. Or there are, you just aren't allowed to buy, loot, or use them. Why? Because the dev's thought it would be cute apparently. This is my classic example of stupid design decisions in Planescape:Torment that made no sense.

Yeap. There are no current plans for any more Eternity 1 DLC. But you would have to be crazy to believe they are not at work on Eternity 2.
