http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obsidian/project-eternity/comments @Tristan The drops system will be semi-random. What I mean by that is there will be specific loot drop lists for things and that loot with be more made loot and not randomly created items. The loot dropped is then picked from the list. Using loot lists, lets us balance the loot that is dropping in specific parts of the game and with specific encounters without having to bring up every single monster and change their specific loot. Although we can still do that for unique things. Does this mean non-monster enemy NPCs won't drop the equipment they're using and wearing, Obsidian? Because I hate that.

COOLDOWNS CONFIRMED Time to rage http://www.kickstart...ernity/comments Creator Obsidian Entertainment 15 minutes ago @David Holmin What we are moving forward with right now is a system that does not require a pure round system. In the IE games, each person was running their own six second round and spells were based on whether they were memorzied. How we look at it, rather than going with a memorization system for spells, in particular, we can use a cool down system. It's a similar balancing system without requireing the whole resting for spells. As for ablities being on that timer, D&D also had certain abilities that could only be used a certain number of times per day - again we want to mimic that with a cool down system.

Did I say I was expecting D&D? Licensing issues alone ruled that out from the start. In fact, I never said I personally was expecting anything at all. I only defended the idea of expecting certain mechanics - in isolation, not necessarily as part of a greater system.

Metamagic Feats
Infinitron replied to Infinitron's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Not quite what I had in mind. -
These were pretty cool to screw around with in NWN. I'd like to see the concept of applying various modifications to existing spells return in Project Eternity.

Combat log
Infinitron replied to armitage's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
There should be a dual display - both a combat log, and (optionally perhaps) floating text above characters' heads. -
Obviously we don't know the answer to this yet. Wait for a large-scale Kickstarter game to be released first.

And way to zone in on something unimportant and misinterpret it. Yes, you caught me. The crux of my whole argument was on BG2 not being in that picture. The entirety of my post is now wrong! The entirety of your post, which is what? That we shouldn't expect a game inspired by D&D games to share their mechanics because those mechanics aren't specifically mentioned in a one-paragraph introductory pitch? Uh, okay.

Holy crap, Merin. The reason Baldur's Gate isn't in that image because it's Bioware's game, not Black Isle/Troika/Obsidian's.

No, that wouldn't be enough either. We'd still be mad (at least with mana and especially mana potions)

Pathetic maybe, but it might be effective. Remember, Obsidian's pitch for this game is substantially if not entirely based on nostalgia for some old games that played in a certain way. It's entirely natural to hold certain expectations.

Right now there's an Obsidian intern reading this thread and telling his boss "DON'T ANNOUNCE COOLDOWNS UNTIL THE KICKSTARTER ENDS!"

Lohi: D&D magic is meant to support a larger party, in which there is typically only one, maybe two mages at most. It's not bad, you're just doing it wrong. Too many people have become spoiled and gotten used to the Dragon Age/MMO model. It's tragic, really. So...

Uh, but Baldur's Gate 2, probably the most popular of the Infinity Engine games, did have sorcerers. Besides, it's not too much to expect people to have some general knowledge about what they're discussing.

But game gives player an option to go solo. Then if your main character is caster, then you get bored. Solo play in a party-based game is a gimmick for players looking for an extra challenge. Anybody who's going to play solo will accept the price of a little boredom. Besides, I can assure you that surviving an entire game with only a fragile mage is anything but boring.

But Gifted1, the casters aren't "players". You play an entire party, not just one caster. As long as the party as a whole has things to do, the player will not be bored.

Some GREAT posts in this thread arguing in favor of the classic Infinity Engine experience and demonstrating its virtues. Keep it up, guys. We may not have another chance.

Temporary Party Members (6+1)
Infinitron replied to Sarevok's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Nobody mentioned how many temporary party members there could be at a time - it could be more than one. The most famous temporary party member in Obsidian's games is of course poor Shandra Jerro. -
So...Dragon Age combat then. Well that's it. I was trying to decide between the $140 and $250 tiers. Now I won't be contributing at all. An old school game with cooldowns. Nice. Unless MCA or Tim Cain can convince Sawyer of the wrongness of them. I'll wait to see if cooldowns are officially ruled out until the end of the kickstarter, but this game is dead to me now. Enjoy your Biowarian twitch-based popamole kiddies. I'll go back to replaying BG2 and anticipating Wasteland 2. Please, they're called "KOOL downs".

Weapon vs Weapon
Infinitron replied to teknoman2's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The idea isn't bad, but there are probably better ways to integrate it into the game's systems. -
How would you limit spellcasting within a suite? A limited number of casts per spell in the suite like the Vancian system, or maybe something like the D&D Sorcerer class? Or would it be something more conventional?

I don't know if you're aware of this, but the majority of posters on this forum ARE European. OP is incredibly pretentious.
