  1. But it doesn't have a bigger punishment. It's a circumstance that arises all the time in IE games. I'm not sure I understand your response here, Josh. Yes, it doesn't have a bigger punishment. And yes, it happens often. How are those two things related to each other, and how do they refute qstoffe's point?
  2. First of all, let me clarify that I'm not entirely averse to removing the "walk out of the dungeon to rest" experience from the game, but I'll defend it nonetheless. Basically, the answer is atmosphere. That sense that we are excavating deep down into a godforsaken hellhole, and it's so horrible down there that we need to come out for rest and supplies, is a powerful one. I would add that if you are returning back to a town to rest, then the walk-out serves as a good excuse to buy new equipment, sell loot and perhaps discover new quests (if the game designers chose to add any to the game, perhaps for that specific purpose). For example, when cleaning out, say, Dragon's Eye in Icewind Dale, you might need to go back to Kuldahar for "resting and refueling" before you manage to finally reach the bottom and slay Yxunomei. It would have been nice to have some new subquests waiting for you in Kuldahar to fill up that downtime.

  4. No, in Wasteland 2, the sum of Paypal pledges was not automagically added to the number displayed on Kickstarter. I assume the same will be the case here.

  9. ??? Listen, if us "munchkins" hadn't been out in force here today with our complaints, Josh probably would not have stepped into the forum to clarify his position with regards to level scaling. And who knows? It could be that thanks to that, even the slightest possibility of level scaling in this game has now been eliminated. Don't belittle the munchkins. We get things done.

  11. I'm not the person you posted, but for me it's the same reason I post on other gaming forums, or on hockey forums. Not because I think I can sway the developers (or my favorite NHL team's GM) into doing things exactly how I want, but to discuss something I enjoy with people who also enjoy the same thing. Also, I post my ideas/thoughts on features for PE in hopes the devs might see them and say, "you know, that might work". But I don't post with the belief that they *will* react that way. I would say that in a Kickstarter project where there's a direct relation between our happiness and the amount of money Obsidian gets to make their game, the chances of them reacting are much higher.
  12. This is a Kickstarter, man. They owe us everything. We're not investors. We aren't putting money into something to have control over it. We are pledgers. Donators. Because you pledge or donate to NPR you don't get to have a say about the programming. The best you can do is pick when you pledge, showing support for certain shows. The same applies here - the best you can do is pledge to support after a certain feature or update is announced to show an overall like of something, but even that is drowned out in the noise of general pledges (as, too, is the "pledge during a given show" for NPR is.) You are not the publisher. You are not the investor. The only say you have is whether you donate and how much you choose to donate. That's it. You want more control - start your own development team. Tell me, if that's true, then why are you spending time on this forum arguing with me and people like me? Obviously you feel that showing your opinions does matter to the developers. And guess what? THEY DO. You do have control. Our criticism here on this forum can change things in this game.

  14. This is a Kickstarter, man. They owe us everything. And that's the mentality that I came in here with. In fact, I went a set further and was hoping this means of funding could replace publishers so that games gamers want could get made all the time. Someone corrected me then and so I'm trying to pass that along and correct you now. When the kickstarter is over, which believe me will be long before there's a real game to talk about, that money belongs to Obsidian and they can do whatever they want with it. They have no contract with us. They don't need to ever give us another update. We are funding a project due to faith in company, not for returns. We cannot pull funding after the fact. I repeat, they *owe* us nothing. lol, I'm not talking about their legal obligations. There are more important things in life than the letter of the law, you know. If Obsidian go against the expectations of their pledgers, they'll lose fans and they'll find it difficult to do another Kickstarter. I'm sure you don't want that to happen, do you? Now get a backbone and stop brown-nosing. Harsh criticism will make this game better for everybody.

  16. I already have. I am loving Mr. Sawyer more each time he posts on this subject. The man just refuses to be pushed around and it is simply amazing. Bravo again, sir. Oh, stop the brown nosing. You're paying this man money for a product. He owes you, not vice versa. We need more details.
  17. The difference is that beefing up individual monsters encourages lazy design ("LOL LETS JUST PUT THESE MONSTERS HERE, LEVEL SCALING WILL MAKE IT WORK"), while setting up a scalable encounter requires careful thought and planning.
  18. Player skill is high level (strategy, tactics), character skill is low level (hitting bad guys with swords) I'm not sure how you can quantify that.
  19. I don't want existing monsters to magically become tougher based on my party's level. Why not just replace them with different, tougher monsters, or beef up their numbers? For instance, in Baldur's Gate 2, depending on party-level more and/or more powerful enemies got added to certain encounters, probably also depending on difficulty level. For instance, Demogorgon would spawn babaus or glabrezus on normal, but balors and mariliths on higher difficulties, IIRC. With some adjustments, Project Eternity's "level scaling" mechanic could in fact be implemented entirely by the difficulty level based encounter changes which have already been confirmed for the game!
  20. Who needs a glowing aura? It's pretty obvious. Generic no-name bandit? Don't loot. Named miniboss NPC? Loot.
  21. Yeah, the first part of this poll is a bit dumb. It looks more like a game developer popularity contest than a poll on actual combat mechanics. Consider redoing it.

  23. Difference: Heart of Winter was an expansion pack to an existing game. This game doesn't even exist yet. So, no.
  24. Copy pasted from another forum: What I think the classic Vancian system does (ideally, at least) is encourage a roguelike mentality where the players try to survive as long as possible before resting for more spells. That can be pretty challenging and fun.

What I mean by that is there will be specific loot drop lists for things and that loot with be more made loot and not randomly created items. The loot dropped is then picked from the list. Using loot lists, lets us balance the loot that is dropping in specific parts of the game and with specific encounters without having to bring up every single monster and change their specific loot. Although we can still do that for unique things. Does this mean non-monster enemy NPCs won't drop the equipment they're using and wearing, Obsidian? Because I hate that.
