  1. Stamina perfectly describes what they're doing with the mechanic. Why would you use vitality for this and not the health aspect instead?
  2. Why? Do you think that every person who likes these styles of RPGs is exactly like you, or fits into a nice, neat little package that you can point at and say "Yep, that's a roleplayer." ??? I'm a former college athlete, and also a certified genius. I don't look like what you'd expect the stereotypical roleplayer to look like, nor do I act like it. However, I've played RPGs for about 20 years. I enjoy them. And earlier in life, I enjoyed more difficult games. But I have a job, a house, car payments, etc. I don't have as much time to dedicate to gaming as I used to. I don't mind more challenging aspects being available, but gaming isn't just something children with no responsibilities do these days. There are plenty of people with more demands on their time who enjoy playing games. Options. Options is where it's at. Let players customize their experience to the difficulty level they feel is appropriate. And for the record, adding "No offense" to the beginning of a sentence does nothing to mitigate an offensive comment. For example: "No offense, but you're a moron. No offense, but you're a fat, ugly slob who lives in his mother's basement." You see? It makes no difference. If anything, it makes it worse. Your comment leads me to believe that you think you know what people should play what games, and that certain people simply -shouldn't- play them. But the fact is, companies make games because they want people to play them. They want a LOT of people to play them. And while the jumpstarter project has allowed them to create a game that is not wholly constricted by the projected financial earnings of the evil empire's accountants, I assure you that they still want to make money. So telling people, or insinuating to people that they -should not- play this game because they don't share the same opinions as you is not only short-sighted, but likely unwelcome by the devs themselves. I doubt you're a genius, just some kind of narcissist.
  3. Except then you will have no idea whether it is utter stupidity or an extreme insight on the character's part. So they should indicated that some answer is due to high intelligence or wisdom or spot skill or what have you either by markers or by additional narrative in the dialogue box. Same goes for bluff. You can be sincere about your threat to rip off someone's face and eat it for breakfast or you can just say it for scaring them away. PST had lots of dialogue where you could be truthful or lying/bluffing and it seemed very fitting. Eh, no. If you're not intelligent enough to figure it out on your own you shouldn't be playing at all.
  4. It's not combat oriented, but that's not exactly what I was talking about. I was just referring to the story part.
  5. Yes, cliches are used a lot because they are familiar and it's easier for people to follow stories. That doesn't mean they are "good" or "bad". It's just nice to see people try new things from time to time.
  6. They will make a profit even if they do a game almost exactly like PST so that's out the window.
  7. Not everything that is new is better than something that is old, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try new things.
  8. You people don't really get why they went to kickstarter to pitch this game do you? Quit appealing to mass market trends for your arguments, you're going to ruin this game with that ****. What does how many units PST sold have to do with anything?
  9. Also, proximity to the equator or things like that doesn't necessarily mean you'll have a jungle there. You don't know the history of the planet and you don't know whether there have been some catastrophes or other events that can change the climate. I mean, hell, Arrakis is a desert planet in Dune. Are you saying that's implausible?
  10. How do you know what the climates of PE are? Have you studied them? Do you know the makeup of thrir solar system? Maybe It's not even in a solar system as we know it. I mean Jesus.
  11. Yea, having the game play the boring fights for you. How is that a "far cry" from having the AI do everything? In the case of those fights you're on autopilot and might as well watch a movie.
  12. Mhmm. Once you set it up, the hope is that you will have to make the minimum amount of input in any given fight. I don't get that mentality.
  13. I honestly don't get the point of playing the game if you're going to have the AI do everything....
  14. Final Fantasy XII had a similar system. Actually DA:O's tactics system pretty much ripped off the gambit system wholesale it seems to me. I never liked it because it never seemed like it worked correctly and I'd just end up inputting the commands myself anyways.

  16. Meh, I like micromanaging all of my characters' actions.
  17. Given the fact that this game is set in a Renaissance-equivalent period, (i.e. the time of Mercantilism, the last gasps of Feudalism,) that doesn't make much sense. An adventurer is already highly analogous to the roving merchants that inspired Mercantilism (who were typically urbane in their retirement.) It's not set on Earth, therefore Earth history =/ PE history.
  18. It's just a quick example. Did you expect him to lay out an entire epic quest for his example? In his example he is suggesting that it is a good mechanic for you to have to write down information that is explicitly given to you. This is not a good mechanic, this is not an interesting mechanic. It's busy work. It's busy work just like killing 10 rats to get 1 Tooth for a quest where you need 10 Teeth is busy work. They could just make you need 100 Rat Teeth and make them a 100% drop rate, but they know if the player understands just how poorly designed and implemented the quest is that it's horrific game design. Just like a Journal that requires you to write down, "Shady guy with Hens went west" or whatever random bs that needs to be entered. The game can easily facilitate that for you, it isn't a matter of player skill, and as long as the person playing isn't a blithering idiot it amounts to busy work. This is bad game design. An example of a good Journal would be the Witcher 2, written as portrayed by a companion of a character doing the quests, it adds lore and dialogue that you won't see unless you read it, meaning it isn't just a note of what's happened thus far, it's all interesting from a story perspective. This is good game design. If you need the journal to tell you to go east when the guy just told you, then you're kind of dumb.

  22. @lordcrash I kind of like the idea of there being notes in the margins that the player can write such as, "did this", or "need to find this", etc.
  23. Sorry but the game shouldn't be made lesser because of different languages. It is going to be translated anyways so the riddles would be rewritten in whatever language in a way that would make sense for those languages.
  24. I don't want a journal where things get randomly deleted, otherwise that looks neat.
