Allow buff/debuff stacking
Luckmann replied to durbal's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
One small correction, though: Flank does stack with everything, including Blind. Just another one of those little inconsistencies we'll have to learn to live with. -
Godlike pointless?
Luckmann replied to Judicator's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Death Godlikes also have the ability of having one of the most awesome looking head models :3 Yeah, but that's a rather moot achievement in a game where all head models suck ESPECIALLY those of all other Godlikes, and female Aumaua (anyone check those out? My goodness) -
Sawyer on vacation?

No they're not. Morally obligated, maybe, but that's debatable. One could argue that they're equally morally obligated to be honest when they feel they can't do it properly, and must cut it after all. I could sue you for not giving me a sandwich when I logged onto the forums today. I would lose. But I could. A Kickstarter pitch and stretch goals are not legally binding. Even under the strictest interpretations, you are promised some form of vaguely defined product at some point down the road. There's not a snowball's chance in hell to successfully sue for someone failing to fulfil a stretch goal. I think it was Larian that actually straight-up cut things out because they fessed up and said that, nope, we can't do it, sorry. This. ^ Never negotiate with terrorists. When it comes to the perpetually offended, they will always be offended. There is always another demand, another concession. -

I did too, and it does happen, I can think of at least two distinct times. But.. that's about it, sadly. -
Oh, snap, I forgot about the resting bonuses. Either the one in Dyrford or Twin Elms can give you +2 Might, allowing you to maintain 26-28 Might for most of the game, if you want to try it. Too bad that the highest checks in the game are ~19. They really should've included some really high checks and checks (or less options) for sub-10's.

Cancer decisions
Luckmann replied to InfiniteEternity's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It's a 2m piece of wood. Why would a quarterstaff *not* be melee? Did you confuse them with.. implements? -
IE games and infinite resting and thus infinite spells. Which is why the buffing was broken. If pre-buffing came at the cost of actual spell slots sacrificed for later fights it would be the best system ever. Just like in PnP. This, more or less. Buffing costs time, effort and limited resources. Add to that the fact that durations are much lower and more valuable than in any IE game, and none of the old assumptions as to why pre-buffing is bad holds any water.
-
Afaik, yes, but no. Still, assuming a dwarf (or aumaua), that's a potential 24 Might before taking buffs into effect. Food can add another dependable +2 for 300 secs at a time. I kinda wish that there was a shield that gave +Might now. For the first time ever I kinda want to play a Dwarf Fighter. 26 Might all day every day.

During every fight you would've pre-buffed, you're going to combat buff in PoE. So maybe not every battle, but then again, you wouldn't pre-buff before every battle if the option was there, either. Especially not with the low durations and the loss of per-rest uses. But either way, most (all?) arguments against pre-buffing are based on erroneous assumptions concerning pre-buffing as it worked in the IE games, superimposed over PoE. The issues that made pre-buffing a problem in some of the IE games are simply not present in PoE, such as very-long-term buffs and the necessity of hard counters vs. very specific opponents.

Damage numbers tell nothing.
Luckmann replied to Ferrante's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Exactly, that's why they should show the speed. They show us the calculated damage, they show us the calculated endurance, they show us the calculated AoE of spells... If you must take decisions based in your guts, they could just remove all of this information too. Don't give them any ideas. Much of the system has been made obtuse deliberately, because you're supposed to be able to play it blind, without paying attention to the ongoings of the mechanics. We should be so lucky we get even that information. That graphic is outdated as all hell, though. -
I'd rather have that too, than what we have now, but ultimately I'd like for all Attributes to be good for every class. It's the fact that the non-intuitive builds are also the no-brainer builds that rubs me the wrong way. I don't think there's a valid reason as to why you shouldn't be able to build a good muscle-wizard or a smart barbarian (or a Fighter, for that matter), but the more obvious defaults should absolutely take precedence if a choice is really necessary. I just don't think that it is. We can have both. We can have both the raging low-intellect high-might/constitution aumauan berzerker and the low-might high-perception/dexterity orlan kneestabber. Or the physically fit elven sorcerer and the brittle-boned human lorekeeper. We can have both the resolute kind wayfarer and the intellectual darcozzi paladini. Just.. not in PoE, apparently, for some reason.

It's been said that it's deliberately muddled, so that those that develop stories in other parts of Eora are free to fill things up, without being constrained too much by what has been said. If you all think about it, there's a lot we don't know about even the places that do come up a lot, like the Vailian Republics and the Aedyre Empire. How are they ruled? What are their major cities? There's a lot of freedom for interpretation. I know it feels like a lack of stuff to us, the players, at this time, but this approach is actually very common in PnP RPG:s, except that a lot of the very-most popular ones have been around for so long that all the bits and pieces have been filled out, thrown out, rewritten and filled out again a dozen times over by now.

The multicultural thing isn't really as pronounced as you'd think. I think it's a drum too oft beaten on in the game, but ultimately, the various groups are rather homogeneous. For example, the descriptions for elves plainly state that Eir Glanfath is mostly elves, and the description for Aumaua mention Rauatai as "theirs". And for example the White March is clearly a (fallen) dwarven settlement, despite it being sponsored by the Grand Empire of Vailia (Old Vailia, not to be confused with the Vailian Republics). The only thing that throws it off for me is that South is what is traditionally the North (frozen tundra, colonized, etc) and the North is jungles and stuff, the Living Lands, afaik. I realize it's not hard to imagine on an alien world, but it just.. throws me off. They are tribal, and seem to have their own teritories acording to map on google search, but i think their teritories are considered a part of drywood Maybe by the Dyrwoodans, formally, but it's very clear that they are functionally separate, once you get to Twin Elms, especially if you're doing Pallegina's quest. For all intents and purposes, Eir Glanfath is a separate nation of tribal forest nomads, reaching from south of Twin Elms up to and including parts of White March.

Let's invent some talents!

I like this idea, because it supports more specialized spellcasters, which is cool.- 38 replies

I agree. Well, I disagree. But I also agree. I agree in that I would love it if "PoE 2" would be merged into PoE, and that you could play PoE with everything that PoE2 will offer. But I don't want a direct sequel. On the other hand, if we assume that each expansion adds another 1-2 levels each, we're actually getting pretty high. I would personally prefer it if any sequel in the series would be standalone.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'd be incredibly surprised - Greatswords aren't even Reach weapons. Only Pikes and Quarterstaffs are, afaik.

I saw no such choice and yes. It's really not that odd, choosing to only pray to one deity. Imagine if you are a Priest of Berath (the only Priest Deity you can actually pray to, which is all kinds of ****ing weird); would you offer prayer to the other gods, or would you pick Berath and stick to it? At the end of all their dialogs you either accept the blessing or say something else. It's also how you get the appease all gods achievement, if you're into that stuff. Besides, you don't actually get to have a real conversation with any of them until you do "their" quest. How is he the only one you can pray to? You can pray to all of them in that temple.. But to answer your question, I guess I would stick with Berath. That's the problem, we're talking about the end of the quest, when Hylea actually talks to you (and flips off Pallegina; it's sad that I didn't get to hold a similar conversation with Berath). And it's not the only one you can pray to - you can pray to anyone you want. But you might want to only pray to Berath (to stick to the example). In my case, I chose to pray to Berath because I'm a Deathlike. If I'm a ranger or druid, I might've chosen to only pray to Galawain. My next character, a Barbarian (might remake into Ranger) from The White That Wends will pray to Galawain and Rymrgand. I mean, Hylea? Who cares about Hylea. Do I look like a feathered midwife?
