I would agree with KotOR being better than any RPG I've ever played on the PS2. Jade Empire on the other hand.. I've played lots of RPG's on the PS2 that I would call better.

Well, obviously Gothic is the game that defines good exploration for me. The only thing stopping you from exploring the entire world right off the bat in Gothic is your own skill. Since the combat is of the action type (with swings and blocks), you can survive as long as your own skill takes you. For the normal casual player, this means the world opens up in the same rate as the levels stack up on your character. The drive to explore is always there though, if not only because you want to see more of the interesting setting, then because of Gothic's extremely long view distance. If you're not curious after seeing a ruined castle on a mountain top a few kilometers away, then you're just not the explorer type. Gothic also manages to strike that balance between tedious and rewarding very well. The rewards are pretty far between, but just as you're beginning to feel bored by the exploration, something new pops up in the distance, or your search is rewarded in some other way. Often it's just a hidden corpse complete with gear behind a bush. Other times (and this is my most proud moment in Gothic) it's something intricate as a hollow rock in a river that you must dive down under to find the entrance to. Then there are forgotten cemeteries, old ruins, crypts, secret passages under churches, drowned villages, all these interesting places that are not connected to the main story in any way. A big part of Gothic's great exploration feel is that the game lacks loading times. No matter if you enter a cave or a building or just walk around the massive landmass, you're never disrupted by anything loading. You can simply just immerse yourself completely in the game as you strive to survive and find new locations.

I really tried playing this game, as it came out in the backwater of Gothic (sort of), but I could never really get into it. I think I still have the CD's lying around somewhere. I'm in a gaming slump myself right now (except for the review games I have to play) and Arx Fatalis should suit my tastes. I think.

No, they don't. Want to know why? Because it is a preview, not a review. The journalists are giving most everything the benefit of a doubt until the developer turns in the finished product. Trust me, I write this stuff myself. There's no point reviewing the game before it is finished. But only a moron would actually swallow the entire load the previews shoots out.. Nope. But noone does. Peter Molyneaux is the king of hype. That doesn't stop Bethesda trying to make their product sound better than it actually is. Hype is when you mention you have 3000 unique NPC's but forget to mention they are walking encyclopedia's. That's the difference between information and hype, which you still have to learn. Sigh. See above, clueless one. Maybe we should have a public vote about this? ) Oh yeah, as a games news journalist I don't follow news updates. I write them.

I have no idea what Kovalchuk is planning to do, but what irks me is how the Northamerican media is portraying him (or anyone else not Northamerican): like a greedy bastard with no heart that only plays for money. ANY player (except perhaps Stevie Y) wants as much as he can get, even if it involves switching teams. Just look at Scott Niedermeyer. And it would be really ridiculous to see Lecavalier (who is a great player in his own right) get paid more than Kovalchuk. I don't like how players are always milking more money out of their clubs, but I absolutely hate how the Northamerican media is trying to make it sound like every foreign player is a greedy bastard while every homegrown boy is playing for the love of the game. And yes, I'm going to be this grumpy until Sundin comes back.

I haven't been too interested in this, but from what you can see (and hear) about the game, it really sounds as if they might pull this one off. I can also imagine the myriads of add-ons Lionhead can release for this title. More sets, more actors and more manuscripts! Let's hope it's as good as it looks and sounds.

That's not quite true either. I am more of an explorer type of player, I like to immerse myself in strange, new worlds and be free enough to walk around at my own leisure. Morrowind let me do all those things, but after exploring the umpteenth generic dungeon without a real purpose, it became painfully clear that the game had not gotten enough love from its developers. Instead of making a few special places, Morrowind is full of pointless little places that are not worth exploring. In fact, the entire gigantic island that Morrowind plays out on is made that way, and exploring is only fun if you have the prospect of finding something interesting or unique every once in a while. The Gothic games are a perfect example of this delicate balance. If there are too many goodies hidden in the game, you become spoiled and don't appreciate what you find and exploring becomes uninteresting. If you have too few surprises, it's not worth going through hundreds of generic dungeons to find that one special cave. Gothic has a decent amount of hidden stuff for the explorer types among us, but it never feels cheap or not worth it.

Yeah, I never understood why they removed the horses when they made Morrowind. I mean Daggerfall had horses, and I had plenty of fun with them too! Riding around inside stores going 100 MPH is always a blast.

I think World of Warcraft is a really, really good game. It's just the genre (MMORPG) that doesn't tickle my onion.

Haha, the guy who's vividly talking about features in a game that's not been released yet and noone has played is actually accusing someone who's using at least something real (experience with Morrowind) as grounds for his statements, for "spouting off at the mouth". Self insight.. Epiphany, as usual you have swallowed the entire hype machine surrounding whatever it is you're interested in at the moment and talk about this hype as if it's facts. Newsflash: it's not! It's called HYPING, and you really need to learn the meaning of that word soon, because you're making a fool of yourself everytime you post on these boards.

I pre-ordered Morrowind from the US when it was released. It is still the most expensive game I ever bought. Ever since I played Daggerfall I had been longing for the follow-up, and in the previews everything looked fantastic, albeit a little brown. Then I got the game, and the start was awesome, as you created your character in-game and I also loved how I was a prisoner on a boat (kind of like Gothic). Then I started playing the game and for a few hours I kept playing with the feeling of "when is it going to fulfill its promises". I think it took me 30 hours to realize that what I was getting was all the game had to offer. It would never fulfill the promises it made and the monotonous gameplay was there to stay. I've been a bitter enemy of Morrowind ever since. But I do love Daggerfall.

Nice to see Fire Emblem on the Gamecube! Now all I have to do is convince my friend who has a Gamecube to buy it so I can leech from him. I did play the original Fire Emblem on the GBA. During the course of the game I managed to get half of my game companions killed so when I finally reached the last battle it was impossible to complete. That annoyed me.
