Update #52: Monk!
Monte Carlo replied to Darren Monahan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
@ Sawyer, the monk strikes me as simply a quasi-spiritual martial arts master. Although obviously Christians had warrior-monks, the whole unarmed fighter thing (for me at least) is redolent of the Chinese warrior-monk tradition. Personally, I'm one of the hell-it's-fantasy-don't-like-it-then-don't-play-it crowd, but I find the cultural influences interesting. I can imagine I'll end up solo-ing the game with one for a laugh, after I've exhausted all the Valarian costume combos.- 242 replies

Balkenkreuz. And while I agree Dishonored is a beautiful thing to look at, I disagree that Wolfenstein looks like "any other FPS out there". CoD/Battlefield/Killzone/MoH etc, now that's where you should take a closer look at. And then try to distinguish them. Good luck. nvm

Update #52: Monk!
Monte Carlo replied to Darren Monahan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I am beginning to think the word 'Monk' in of itself is almost pejorative, laden as it is with either Eastern or Western cultural significance... * looks up synonyms for Monk * Recluse / Cenobite / Mendicant / Pilgrim Am rather tickled by Mendicant... ... but, personally, I prefer the idea of a 'Kinky Gimp' class with an enchanted Ball-Gag but that's enough about my weekend.- 242 replies

Update #52: Monk!
Monte Carlo replied to Darren Monahan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I kind of want to dig up that one satire about World War II being badly written I saw once, but I can't find it... My grasp of history is impeccable, as is my prose. * flounces off *- 242 replies

Update #52: Monk!
Monte Carlo replied to Darren Monahan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Er, when the Conquistadors arrived in South America (in fast, hi-tech galleons) with plate armour, groovy hats and velvet codpieces (not to mention cannons), the locals were wearing feathers and had failed to develop even basic metallurgy.- 242 replies

Update #52: Monk!

I agree that the inclusion of the letter 'X' is heresy and a fantasy no-no, right up there with egregious use of apostrophes instead of vowels.- 242 replies

BDSM monks are kewl. The Valian hats are even cooler. You could have a sado-masochist monk in a plumed hat. This game, seriously, is going to be cooler than Frank Sinatra drinking Martini on a yacht.- 242 replies

I really want to like it but it... looks like any other FPS. I don't know what's going on with art direction nowadays, but think of all the sheer fun you could have with Nazi 1960's tech. Instead they've got robots with a Balkankreuze that could be robots in any FPS. I know Dishonored and Bioshock 3 had great art direction, so there are folks out there getting it right.

I was so annoyed by the game not working for me that I forgot it had micro-transactions. Are they ones that affect actual gameplay/character ability (pay to win), or are they non-ability related, like Path of Exile's decorative and stash space options? I'm not sure LC, check out the review in Rock, Paper, Shotgun he tries to explain it there. Edit: IIRC one box contained a mount / pet

Space Marines dry-humping. Bejaysus this thread is heading downhill even faster than I anticipated. Next, our Ork LI crosses the romantic divide with a Chaos Marine. In a tank.
-
Bwahaahhahaha micro-transactional bait. It will cost you a couple of bucks to open those. Edit: The dude playing it on RPS mentioned it, about UK sterling 1.30.
-
I played Path of Exile. It's insane. I like it but yeah, the skill trees are just too big and after a while I got tired of *every item* being socket-able.
-
^ Bio could work with that. It's like forbidden lurve, both mentally and physically. The Space Marines, having discovered lurve through the power of the Dialogue Wheel, would... improvise. * Imagines ideas posted to Bioware Forums * * shudders *

Judge Hades Character
Monte Carlo replied to Hurlshort's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I will choose to remember him as the dude with the mad grin! RIP Visc / Hades. -
True but it's not just that, it's the art direction. I like bewbs as much as the next guy but that armour is crap.

It's an even better conspiracy if they show you the fake

I'd love to sell the corpses of the unicorns, fairies, sprites and pixies at the bottom of my garden. Sadly, the claymore mines eviscerate them into a fine paste, thus rendering them unsuitable for trading purposes. -
^ that is extraordinarily ugly. I'm sure you've got it revved up to the max, and it still sucks.

Chris Roberts' interview about crowdfunding, with numbers
Monte Carlo replied to Cultist's topic in Computer and Console
I didn't mean that Triple A games would cease to exist. There will always be market for them. What I mean is that games developers will be able to make a healthy profit from more focussed titles that *don't need* to be Triple A and can tell publishers where to get off. @ Volourn: I've had you on ignore for three years, poppet. Don't bother. -
Chris Roberts' interview about crowdfunding, with numbers
Monte Carlo replied to Cultist's topic in Computer and Console
69% of backers are over 25 89% of backers game on a desktop 66% of backers wanted to support a game made specifically for the PC Translation = stop making games for kids. The future is a healthy niche, cottage PC gaming industry free from the dead hand of 'triple A.' -
Im curious, what is your particular reason for being against always online? It's not anything other than (a) what if my internet connection fails and (b) why on earth should I pay for a product that doesn't *really* need online connection only to feed the convenience of the producer? I'm the customer, FFS, it should be about *my* convenience, not Microsoft's.
-
^ Very simple - I was planning on getting my son one of these for his birthday later this year. If it has an always-online requirement then I won't buy it. I'm sure I'm not alone.
