Mikeymoonshine replied to Sceptenar's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I played a little on a character that did and she said nothing about it in the initial convo. Though Berath and Hylia both reacted to me breaking oaths to them. It's possible it comes up later, I really can't see why they wouldn't aknowledge such a major choice in some way. -
Ofcourse Obsidian want constructive criticism, but that's really not what's going on here. You're being completely tunnelvisioned, and your claims are false. It's not debatable. The consensus on steam, and on metacritic is that 90% of the reviews are very to overwhelmingly positive. An unplayable bugfest as you describe would NEVER get such reviews. Noone is saying, that there isn't any bugs, but it's really a minor issue for the most part. You're grasping at straws to force your false narrative upon this forum, and it's getting so damn old. One thing to consider is how minor the issue is depends on who's playing. I haven't run into any broken quests yet so I can't speak to that but that is going to affect anyone but stuff like the save import feature and even whether or not the relationship system works properly is going to matter more to some people than others. Just from watching LPs and reviews I have noticed this game has attracted a lot of players who either didn't play the last game, didn't complete it or completed it but then kinda forgot about it or whatever. This game is prettier, more open, has full VO and the pacing is a bit faster so it is attracting people who may not have been as interested in the last game. Those people aren't really going to care or even notice the issues with the import, they will just pick a preset and go with it. Most profeshional critics will also be in the camp of not caring about the save imports. Someone like me though it really bothers me when the game is flagging even minor choices i made wrong. I have two friends who are playing this game and neither of them have said anything about imports or bugs they are both really enjoying it.

I don't think anyone is against people being informed about bugs, a couple of people are just annoyed at a specific user because they keep claiming that there is some "general consensus" among players that deadfire is a subpar game and that all the positive reviews are from "fanboys" and don't count or whatever. This is quite obviously a rediculous claim to make and I can see why it's bothering some people but I would suggest they just try to ignore it. That said I am as annoyed as everyone else is about these bugs because for me this makes the game unplayable. I feel like I am wasting my time with my current playthrough because I will just have to start again when they finally fix the bugs and who knows what the patch tomorrow will actually fix.

As I have said several time already there is a specific dislike for the plot, the vast majority of comments even here echo that. I'm not trying to say people are wrong for disliking it or upset that they don't but despite the fact that I did have issues with the plot it didn't seem especially bad to me either. Some of the criticsm I have seen seems somewhat overblown to me. So I was interested to know what people here thought. It's really as simple as that. As someone suggested above maybe it's just that this game is more plot focused than many others, or maybe it's because this is a spiritual successor to games that are known for their plots.

I do kinda hate this notion that we do this "I'M GAY LOOK AT ME" thing tbh. Like I don't talk about it irl much at all, I am still kind of afraid to tbh you never know how a person will react. I don't bring it up at work, I don't with most of the straight people I associate with. I don't even talk about it much around friends and family who know.

More to this point, I think if POE1 hadn't laid it on so thick, it would provoke a lot less negative reactions. Same goes for Torment: Tides of Numenera. I liked POE1's dryness, its plot twist, many of the more polarising companions like Sagani, etc, and even then, I was speedreading half the time because everything is couched in unnecessary purple prose. The first couple hours of Deadfire, I feel the dialogues themselves are much better, but they still needed to delete all the descriptives - not because descriptives are bad per se, but because they are done so badly. *You see Tigranes furrow his brow, as if in deep thought. The shadows extend behind him, flickering in the semi-darkness cast by the Vailian lantern on the porch, which bears an ornate decoration and by the way was given by his grandmother who back in 1978...* Anyone who's done any professional writing - scholarly, fiction, whatever - knows that the first thing most writers have to learn is how to cut. I suspect there is very little systematic oversight for most RPG writing, as you get some guidelines, go and write, then it's so chaotic trying to squeeze it into however the game/level design/quests/etc have changed. I don't disagree although interestingly I love pillars but never completed Torment (I may go back to it). I found the writing in Torment too much in a way I didn't for Pillars but it was really the combat that made me quit, it was just so boring to play. I will try it again though as there is a lot about that game I liked.

The realism argument I don't get but then I am lgbt so I guess I struggle to relate to a "there are too many gays in this piece of media!" kinda thing. Like ok sure lets assume that bisexual people are as rare as in the real world (which is probably not as rare as a lot of straight people seem to think). That doesn't mean that any specific group of people are going to be representative of statistics based on the entirity of society. Four bi people just happening to be on the same boat is not some statistical impossibility. It's unlikely but unlilkely things happen all the time. Apparently all these characters were made bi by their writers and there wasn't any kind of sexuality quota. That's unlikely too but it happened.

I like some of it but I do feel there is a bit much of it and it does make me more inclined to skip a lot of it on a second playthrough.

Are you sure? Oo Because if you look at steam revievs I think you'll find that every fifth or them or so says that Divinity OS plot is the worst part of the game Even the positive ones It has the same problems actually but just... on another level. Makes all POE story problems look small in comparison x) Sure but lets take for example this video Which argues that a sequal should not have been made because of the problems with the plot. I have not heard anyone say such a thing about Divinity OS and if they did they are an idiiot because divinity OS 2 is a brilliant game. So I kinda feel like people do in fact pick on the plot of this series more and maybe that's just my personal experience but I have read and watched a lot of discussion on both games and I rarely see the story of either divinity game recieving this kind of criticism.

I know I am arguing with a lot of people here but I do really appreciate these responses and can understand many of them so don't get me wrong.

I know someone who complains all the time about bugs in every game he plays, including doing bugs list and sending them to the developers, and he's actually praising Deadfire because he haven't encountered many bugs so far (20+ hours in). He use a preset legacy. So stop complaining about having to wait months, make your own preset that match your save and enjoy a very stable game. I imported my save and at least two major choiced imported wrong, I made my own preset and at least two major choices imported wrong. Eder is flagged wrong no matter what I do. No the game isn't full of bugs and it has been perfectly stable but I am a bit peeved that I am going to have to restart after they finally patch this.

There was no promise but it could happen. Zahua was planned for the first pillars game but cut and added in the white march dlc. So it's possible that if they have plans to add more companions in dlc they will add Ydwin as there were already plans to make her a full companion. Wouldn't get your hopes up though.

You go to see maerwald to get answers on the whole watcher thing and it's on the way to defiance bay which is the most reasonable place to go next as staying in gilded vale isn't an option. Once u have seen maerwald you learn about the whole losing your mind thing and there you have your reason. This is just about as reasonable a motivation as any other RPG of this type but for some reason people defend other games and act like it's a big problem here.

Sure but it's not like you have much on an idea how to start tracking Theos in pillars either. Just a few leads. Deadfire isn't as much of an urgent thing for one thing your task is kind of updated as u go along.

I am a few hours into Deadfire and can confirm that, the pacing just feels wrong at the start. One day, you watch the gods discussing and get the feeling that this is an important matter. The next day (actually a week later, since you travel by ship) you start running errands in a really huge city. Eder even makes a comment about losing track. Also you have a lot of stuff to micromanage, especially your ship, but also companions, factions and your personal fame. You have to make a lot of choices, like distributing skills on a borderline overwhelming skill tree, but can't really judge their outcome, since combat is very rare. And select a ship crew out of lots of NPCs, which all have different skills and character traits. And spend money you don't have on ship stuff you can't judge what it does. And hey, your cook broke her hand and morale goes down, since you don't have beer on board, manage that! Also there are several factions you can side with or not, but don't really get an idea how and why that matters and what consequences this will have in the future. There is one larger dungeon (a mansion of some kind), but the reason to enter it seems miniscule and also requires to take a side between two factions, where you can only talk to one of them. All other fights are simple brawls, a lot of buildings and persons have no meaning (yet). I feel very lost and without a red thread. I know sooner or later everything will be pieced together, but the start is really rough. First you are drawn in, then you are let go. Everything you do feels pointless compared to your really important main quest. It's still a good game, don't get me wrong Isn't this just the same as bg2 thouh? The begining sets up the plot and then you are dumped into athkatla where u then do a whole bunch of unrelated side quests and explore the city/surrounding area. For the most part the plot doesn't pick up again until about halfway through the game. Despite the fact that there is definitely a sense of urgency there too.

I do agree with the general issues with the plot. For example the other stuff going on in gilded vale is more interesting than what is going on with the main plot. The main plot doesn't really get interesting until defiance bay and then lady Webb kind of ruins it by just telling you everything. Like I kinda worked out the big reveal at the end of pillars before the end but they could have dropped a few more hints I guess. The stuff in the white march dlc is a bit better for that but that came out after the game so many players including myself played that after they had already finished the game. On the other hand I appreciate what they were going for with the story. There are aspects of it that are very interesting and in general the writing is good. The slow start helps push you to explore and learn about the world. So I don't really see that as much of a problem. The info dumps are a little irritating I agree but it's not exactly a new thing either.

I guess, as I said I am not saying their aren't issues with this story and I get having problems with the way it's presented too. I just find issues in so many games it sometimes seems like Pillars is singled out a little. Like the point about urgency (it makes no sense fot you to be doing side quests while *insert plot* is happening). That can be applied to so many rpgs I honestly roll my eyes when it comes up. I get that it's a problem but it exists in so many games as people expect side quests in rpgs and ,many rpgs have some level of urgency to their main quest so it can be all epic and save the worldy.
