Luckily great danes and saint bernards aren't seen as a cool macho status symbol so you get less idiots raising and encouraging their dogs to be aggressive

I think this is one of those nature vs nuture things. You're going to hate me for saying this, but I really can't agree. You had an out of control dog, you have a trained police officer. I wouldn't scrap the officer's life, or their utility to the city for the sake of one damn dog. Enforcing standards of conduct is partly about having a sense of proportion. It was probably more dangerous to fire 5 shots in such close proximity to other people with little regard to surroundings The officers were also not trained to deal with dogs but that has since been partially rectified as now all officers have to undergo training I would not ask to have his life or career ruined but there wasn't even a reprimand for shooting a dog trying to flee and that's what gets me. If he panicked and shot a twice tasered and collared dog I don't have much faith in how he would acquit himself in an actual life or death situation

The dog was tasered, collared, and trying to get away when the cop shot it 5 times The argument was that he didn't need to shoot it the dog when he could have assisted the female animal control officer who was struggling to control it. The dog was moving away from the woman when he shot it the first time and continued to shoot it 4 more times. Most people weren't asking that he go to jail but it was expected that at least he would get an official reprimand and at most lose his job. Ideology aside the usual argument against copy and pasting the health care system from some other country is that none of the countries have anything close to the numbers that we are dealing with. We have cities with more people than some of these countries. Personally, I would love if we could get some kind of UHC here but I don't think its ever going to happen in my life time unless the US breaks up into smaller countries
