Companions location
Yria replied to Majber's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I did her first quest (the one with the stolen gloves) but I don't even have an option to ask her to join. Wonder what I did wrong. Or do I also have to finish the quest with the tablet and Arkemyr? -

Companions and Romance
Yria replied to InsaneCommander's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
This. Also, didn't they say that companions will have preferences regarding the character's gender? But as I understand from various streams, so far both Serafen and Tekehu seem cool with either. Or is it just the ladies (Maia and Xoti) who have strict preferences? -
Portraits II
Yria replied to Amentep's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
This isn't exactly portrait related, but I'm slightly upset about the new godlike models. Didn't Josh say not so long ago that instead of making new portraits, they decided to focus on creating character models more closely resembling the existing portraits? If so, how come the result is three almost identical female fire godlike heads that look nothing like either of the old portraits? Here are the models: https://78.media.tumblr.com/466c7e4db04049ac24b59556a1e3e02f/tumblr_p8d41w5mfD1un2x6xo4_1280.png And the portraits: https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/fl_lossy,q_80/f_auto/v1/gameskinny/ee46abfb58fb3c59d288230e7d41f0ab.jpg Death godlike also look kinda uglier this time (though since they are you know, Death godlike, maybe they are supposed to be ugly). Old: https://venturebeat.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Pillars-of-Eternity-Death-Godlike-heads.jpg?resize=1000%2C1064&strip=all?strip=all New: https://78.media.tumblr.com/9fde8d7623e7e9c2a899469439f35b60/tumblr_p8d41w5mfD1un2x6xo8_1280.png https://78.media.tumblr.com/c284a651376aeec304cc078578b83733/tumblr_p8d41w5mfD1un2x6xo7_1280.png They used to have a lot of black smoke around their heads. Now they just look bald. -

Yeah, I consider the way Kana's endings were handled the best of all of the companions. Even though it can be a real pain to get him the ending you want, it's subtle and real life-like. Each of my playthroughs I arrived at the epilogue slides with the same thought: ok, how will Kana end up this time?. Was never able to completely predict it.

I think all the companions at whom you can just shrug during their personal quest just make a decision based on the previous conversations. Like, if you keep telling Sagani that family is the most important thing and then pick "Listen to your heart!" option with Persoq, she will tell him about his family. Same with Pallegina, and I think with Aloth as well? But if you are not consistent with your replies throughout their conversations, at least with Sagani, trying to shrug at her in the end will cause some really bad results.

Heh, Laura Bailey was exactly who i was thinking of when I wrote the caveat about some of them not getting to exercise their range lately. She actually has a ton of vocal range in older stuff but recently has gotten somewhat type cast and sounds samey. Not her fault. Just gotta hope the voice direction avoids that. Where did you hear Liam O'Brien as Serafen? There are voice samples floating around of these characters? I share your hope. There was this stream just a couple of days ago: https://mixer.com/MaximusRaeke?vod=27848688 Serafen spoke up a few times, and so did Xoti. I share your concern. I submitted the question for the last dev Q&A and they said they’d have to follow up. I suppouse we can always replace the voice files with the old ones from PoE if it comes to that, but it will be tedious.

All the VA's from Critical Role at least have a similarly diverse range as far as I know, even if some of them haven't gotten to use it much lately. I don't know, I was able to spot Laura Bailey every time I heard her, and Liam O'Brien only caught me by surprise in WoW (he does sound differently as Serafen though). But there is no point in worrying about it now. It may depend on whether they plan to do VO work for all of the language releases. But Larian Studios managed full VO for D:OS2 and it doesn't appear to have broken them. Yeah, but the final act of the game was a mess. I'm all for full VO as long as it is high quality (DOS2 had that covered) and doesn't come at the cost of other important parts of the game.

There will be more voicesets on top of those already in the first game, including some new voicesets fashioned after the Critical Role Vox Machina characters as part of the Vox Machina DLC. Actually, as of Beta 4 many of the voice sets have been replaced (i.e. male “Noble” is still there, but it’s a completely different voice) Huh? I wonder what's the reasoning behind that. I don't want my character to suddenly sound like a completely different person. Did you realize that Edér and Aloth are done by the same voice actor? Well, there is one single voiceline in WM1 where Aloth sounds exactly like Eder, I had to check the chat window because I wasn't sure which one of them was talking. But I somehow doubt that every other VA will be Matt's level of awesome in this regard.

Xoti's definitely did (I liked the old face better, but they seem to have fixed her hood), and I think so did Ydwin's. That's how you act when you find yourself in a foreign land where nobody speaks your language! I'm kinda worried about Xoti now, I don't think there ever was a single Laura Bailey's character that I liked. Her voice is fine, but their personalities somehow always annoyed me to no end. Hope this time will be different.

How did you manage to convince him to do that? I saw people complaining that he wouldn't agree even after you finished his quest, and the only way to make him do the spoiler thing is to draw straws and have him lose (which is random and may take a lot of reloads).
-
That part in WM where Maneha says "If you want something truly forgotten you take it to the Abbey", and Eder starts eyeing Durance with a crazy smile on his face, is even better. Nobody likes Durance. Even Grieving Mother drops her aloofness and says something sarcastic when he is killed in a fight.

No Lady Webbs this time, please
Yria replied to PugPug's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
That's what I thought about Lady Webb, too. That, along with Thaos' reaction to the Watcher in the Sanitarium, did make him appear more human and showed that sometimes even he can leave loose ends. Also, it's not just Hiravias, I definitely saw Kana argue with Iovara once as well. -
Baby on Board
Yria replied to ThatUndeadLegacy's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Well, to be fair the only place where Aerie could leave her baby was the Throne of Bhaal which doesn't sound like a great alternative to her backpack, what with that crazy imp enchanter, Cyric coming over to say hi and whatnot. Caed Nua, on the other hand, is perfectly safe! Save for the constant bandit invasions. And the Leaden Key finding their way into our basement like it's no big deal. And the xaurips. And the fampyr if you didn't kill him. And, as we now know, the walking adra statue. But otherwise perfectly safe. -
Baby on Board
Yria replied to ThatUndeadLegacy's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I'm trying to justify kidnapping her on one of my playthroughs simply to see the banter in Deadfire, and I just can't. I guess I could think of some... pretty ridiculous... reasons to take her from her adopted brother, like "He probably only wants her strong soul for himself", or "Glanfathans are crazy, she's better off with me", or "Can't have my own kids 'cause godlike, imma kidnap the orlan", or something. But I fail each time because after kidnapping her the MC also takes her to Sun in Shadow to fight Thaos. Like... wut? They set off on what may very well be a one way trip, not knowing if they are even going to survive the jump, and they take an infant with them? Couldn't even be bothered to leave her in safety at Caed Nua? 10/10 responsible parent, would totally let them adopt a child. -
She couldn't leave the island herself, true, but someone could go down there and talk to her. Which is exactly what happened in the end. And since we descended into the pit with the help of the gods themselves (surely they remembered that Iovara was still down there and able to talk?) they probably weren't all that worried about her potentially spreading the truth. At least not as much as they were about Woedica gaining power. Her punishment looks more like Thaos' personal vendetta to me, the gods really don't seem to care much. And I doubt they would care about her soul getting destroyed either.
-
Which is something I'm really curious about. If the godlike are a direct creation of the gods or a byproduct of their existence, it means they didn't even exist until about two thousand years ago. Then, around the time the Engwythan missionaries bring the news about the "true" gods to the heathens, boom. People start giving birth to creepy looking babies of all kinds. There ought to be some theological texts about that in Eora, some sort of explanation, perhaps made up by the Engwythans, or at least some speculation as to why they began to appear when they did. Sure, two thousand years is a long time, but it is a very unusual phenomenon, I doubt the people of Eora could have forgotten that the godlike hadn't always been around.

Tbh I never really understood why destroying her soul is considered some kind of rebellion agaisnt the tyrannical gods. It's a rebellion against the natural order of things, if anything. She says it herself that the Wheel existed well before the gods, it's not their creation, so not being a cog in the Wheel system =/= giving the gods middle finger. It's not even their system. Her soul being erased from existence is way more convinient for them (at least for those of them who are worried about the kith finding out their secret).
-
I recently replayed the ending section of POE - there was no option to return Iovara to the wheel, just destroy her soul, thus releasing her from the wheel entirely. There is such an option, I think I even used it in one of my playtroughs. But to access it you first need to choose something like "So it's all your fault that I'm going crazy now". Then a dialogue option will appear to "punish" her by sending her to the Wheel against her will. I guess it's considered a [Cruel] option because she really, really doesn't want to go there since it would make her forget the truth about the gods.
-
He is always sent to the Wheel upon death. It's just that he Awakens in his teens each time (thanks to his goddess) and gets back to whatever he was doing in his previous life. At least that's what Lady Webb says. Which brings the question, who's to stop Woedica from simply Awakening him again even if you erase his memories? Or do we somehow perma-erase them, so there is nothing to remember at all? I never condired this possiblity, but now I think I'm going to destroy his soul from now on just to be on the safe side.

What affects Kana Rua's ending?
Yria replied to Sleazebag's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
In short? It's hella complicated, more so than for any other companion in the game. If I remember it correctly, there are actually a few (5?) variables like "Kana inspired", "Kana's faith in Engwytans lost/reaffirmed", "Kana something something", and you can gain or lose points for each during the game through your conversations with him. It's not just what you say during his quest in the Endless Paths. When he expresses his shock about the things you see in the Sanitarium, or asks for your opinion on the animancy, or other stuff like that, the replies you pick affect the count. The final result comes from the combination of these variables: "Kana inspired < 2, Kana depressed > 4" => ending number one, "Kana this > 3, Kana that < 5" => ending number two, etc. So it is quite possible that you picked a couple of answers that differed from your first playtrough and got a completely different ending. That said, it could just as easily be a bug. Unfortunately, I don't know the exact variables and what conversation choices affect them, but you should be able to dig them up in the game files if you know where to look (which I don't). I myself was only ever able to get that one ending where he is not recognised by the traditional scholar community but gains popularity among the less narrow minded crowd, and I finished the game three times picking different replies during his quest.- 1 reply
