I just don't think that Star Trek lends itself very well to the RPG genre. I don't know, but I guess it's mainly because I can't figure out how they'd throw obsticals in your path when Starfleet seems to be the type where "If you need it you can get it" rather than "Well you gotta jump through these hoops or do something for me". It's hard to explain but basically I feel like if you did do an RPG you'd have to do it rather than as a single party, you were a ship, your HP would be your health etc. Because you wouldn't have to work against internal politics and there aren't many third parties in any war that starts up besides the ferangi. I mean if you look at most of the wars that have popped up in the series, it's usually "Feds + allies vs. Everything else within range". Of course I'm sure they could come up with something that's third party, but *shrugs* I just think there wouldn't be enough conflict for the series to work (given most of the shows plotlines revolve around disasters rather than conflicts and always ends up being a single guy with special tech rather than a large empire or conspiracy.)

you mentioned MMO's that was a link to an MMO. However a standard RPG doesn't fit as well as an MMO because you can't earn money in a similar vein and you have to have MUCH less repetition than in an MMO.

well from previews AC2 looks like it's going to be SIGNIFICANTLY improved over it's predecessor.

See, this is what I don't understand. I think people are thinking way too small. There's a ton of races, political intrigue, and all sorts of **** in just the movies I've seen. I never watched a lot of the series, but I am just shocked that everyone seems to assume that a Star Trek MMO means you're going to be a part of Star Fleet. Like you say, you'd rather be a Klingon. I think the game would drop the ball if it didn't let you be a part of the major races in the Universe. http://startrekonline.com/ ?

no, but I don't think people would react well if we WEREN'T federation.

but that's the thing, every impression I've gotten of latinum is that it's like gold (which doesn't make sense to lug around a heavy valuable material when you're in the future)

A Star Trek RPG similar to Mass Effect could easily be made. There's enough races that could be used as antagonists threatening the known galaxy -- the Borg, Tholian Assembly, Breen but most interesting would be Species 8472. The player character could be some 'veteran' or 'newbie' Starfleet officer sent off in a ship travelling around several planets looking for allies & clues on how to fight the 'evil'. I can see this... kind of, but you'd have to have a one heck of a work around for the main character not having money.

the most recent dream I remember was one where I was somehow taken back into the navy and was doing everything in my power to prevent being tossed out again... weirdest part about that was I literally kept asking myself "why am I back here? This *****in sucks!" then the petty officers would go onto nice mean binges and then I woke up... hating myself for wanting to go back there for whatever reason.

I think the reason DS9 was loved was because it wasn't mainly finding new life and making peace. the Federation got into a war with another group during several of the seasons and showed a more military side to the feds. I don't think Trek would make a very good RPG because you don't exactly have true free agents running around in the TNG era. Well you do but non in the sense of "heavily armed" agents. The standards of RPGs (western and japanese) just don't conform very well to Trek because there is no morality or rag tag group of well meaning adventerurs who save the day... everything is done for the states benefit, so it wouldn't make sense to limit a player about what equipment he could requisition, and you couldn't very well have morality play any form of role because there's only "Us" and "them" really...

Is there another Star Wars Universe-type Forum out there?

So I take it that it would be hard to carry on a discussion before it gets drown out by new posts? maybe... the best example to look at would be the official warcraft forums (or newsarama.com) because they've got SO MANY posters that if there is no interest the thing is on page three in an hour. -

He's actually got it mostly right, there were one or two choices that were hard because there was a SIGNIFICANT benefit to doing the evil effect, but usually it was just "Minor inconvenience or ease?"

I haven't been up to day, but I could see this happening... what with them enacting a kill order on the Sinestro Corps during the Corps war. And with ganthet being tossed out for having emotion (yay blue lanterns!)

It's an MMO that was free. So everyone could be male or female.

people percieve US jails as soft because we hear tales about how they get 3 square meals, TV's, privacy, etc and it gets to sound more like we're running a hotel of sorts for those who commit crimes rather than an actual prison. Is it really like that? Partially, I'd prefer to be in prison than homeless, but I wouldn't prefer it to what I've got now. probably the only place people are liking right now is a prison in Arizona where the prison system official uses old surplus army tents to increase capacity, and took away things like cigs and coffee, and the guys only eat balogna sandwiches etc. Oh and they've gotta ware pink underwear, they brought back the chain gang and prison stripes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Arpaio#Tent_City read most of that about his way of working the prison system.
