  1. I love islands, while the games themselves weren't the best I did love "Age of Pirates" kind of games where you can sail among such locations, I also liked Risen 2 although it was weird how tech and magic changed (disappeared) since Risen 1
  2. not really, 2 weeks ago an atheist burned an old catholic church in a village here down, I do actually see the increased hostility against religion in RL mirroring on what happened in the medieval era (or even today in the muslim world) and people started to avoid talking about what they believe in, or even lie that they follow any faith it isn't the norm yet, but I worry it will be, in the past there were witch-hunts, there might be in a hundred years one against believers of some higher power, hope it won't come to that though.
  3. no need to connect a fantasy world to RL (any era), LOTR doesn't have to be read with commies, nazis, or allies in mind trying to imagine which faction the Fellowship or somesuch is It is obvious the developers intended to create an unique cultural landscape for this game, with also blending some RL pieces into it, concept art shows as example that many clothes and structures resemble asian ones (mixed with European or "Petran" design) so RL oriental gear is quite appropiate for the setting. edit: besides, whatever Obsidian places in the game it won't be out of place, exactly becvause they define what "is supposed to be in that place" to begin with, I wouldn't mind a white rabbit in a cave myself
  4. That's true for all fantasy (and gaming in general) though. I think there is room for trying to reach adult players even though there are orcs and dragons around I am not sure if that was a serious remark, to me it looks like a trolling attempt against religions and philosophers. Kinda ironic from someone with the name Sacred_Path Can't quite follow you there, I was simply remarking that "my fantasy is less escapist than your fantasy" is kind of a silly idea. I meant "all this soul stuff and rebirth and philosophy" are basically the core for RL philosopy and religions too (especially Buddhism) Sorry if I misunderstood you, but it seems to be "trendy" these days that everyone bashes religions and I thought you just joined their ranks.

  6. "she looks like a mix of native-american and viking, both of which I'm not overly fond of" It is good then that here are no native-americans (or America to begin with) and vikings, nor Europe or anything you can call an European Medieval Era. Just because there were roads made by the Inca no one would have a silly right to complain and bash it because there was also roman roads in Europe. This setting is not RL Earth, I myself had also issues getting used to the "viking" theme of Skyrim but the story and background made this celtic-viking culture fit into the world setting well. I don't know why she or other characters look like they do, but most probably they have good reasons to look as they do, and maybe their cultural background is explained as well as the Dornish is in ASoIaF. Simply hating on them because they look indian or viking or whatever is just childish. Especially as these are just char concepts and who knows how in the end they weill appear as in the final game.
  7. There's a difference, though, between inspired by Medieval Europe and being Medieval Europe. The advantage in a situation like Project Eternity (over, say D&D) is that they can build the monk class history into the setting from the beginning and thus show how / why it developed organically in the campaign setting (which isn't Europe). That's not really the problem. The problem here, IMO, is not that there are Asian style monk orders, but that they dress in a way that looks so out of place. Unless they've recently migrated to... w/e the PE continent is called, they should dress more in accordance with the culture of that continent. But it's not really a big deal. clothes could just as well be part of some religious code of how to dress, to take a fantasy example see the Red Priests in A Song of Ice and Fire (as seen in books or the recent RPG Game of Thrones) In this case no matter what culture the people originate from, they would still follow the original dress code more than not, even if it looks out of place some religions dictate how to dress, others dictate how NOT to (and some do both), maybe some in this setting require you to wear monk-like clothes, or ban the ownership and wearing of any kind of symbols or idolry (who knows what else there may be)
  8. heh, sometimes I find it amusing when a moderator is trolling
  9. hm, the first armor reminds me of drow leather armors, the second reminds me of Byzantine or slavic or Hungarian ones.
  10. They should be dead languages like Latin that aren't spoken by anyone but wizards, like how Latin is a dead language spoken only by the Catholic church and Latin teachers. and the Vatican as a state. Honestly, people should stop saying latin is a dead language, not just that a nation and religion uses it, but also by knightly orders and it is also heavily used in education and medicine.
  11. in most recent variants of D&D, especially Pathfinder is what I can relate to, you get as many free known languages at start as your modifier from a positive Int score (or, in some cases so much bonus languages as you have points over 10 in Int)
  12. I don't have an issue with the original concept of the char, but I do hope we get the ability to help him get out of thedrug addiction or somesuch (or the opposite, and get him killed somehow, maybe an overdose)
  13. I would say the monk that is most known in RPG can be described as " martial artist philosopher"
  14. I want an encounter with 100+ poisionous 1 HP tiny spiders, for the awesome horde/zerg effect
  15. Oh Kotor, funny times. My main character was called Raven, didn't read any spoilers/background before starting the game at all, and there was much joy and grinning when people had their "oooh Raven is Revan!" moments
  16. I say its fun if something like this happens once or twice, just because yo uare powerful it won't be known to everyone in the world. I do agree it shouldn't be the situation in every single bandit raid
  17. this blue dragon will bite the kneecap of the next 3 people who either derail the topic further, point out other posts derailing it, or quote posts requesting to return to the topic
  18. mmo-s don't count, most of the time they barely if at all pass for an RPG to begin with and as for D&D games, I do admit there are some strong powers later on, but as you said not in the early stage As for stacking spellcasters, I wouldn't consider that proving anything, even the Zulu almost won against the UK overwhelming redcoats with "stacked" spearmen I just want to point out that mages in western RPGs (especially D&D) barely have any -if at all- spells that give them equal might in damage dealing compared to a warrior with a sword. Even less so if you try to focus that list of spells on close combat/melee related powers. Mages seem to always have to hire bodyguards to hide behind not to die from a single swing of a sword, and there is no scene with mages laughing insanely as they cut through enemies with their powers (in various spellusing combat forms) which one would actually expect them to be able from books and legends and movies. Nope, they often attack from afar, hiding from enemies, and if they remain alone they run away. Nothing close to the idea of a melee mage. How about no. Magic is stupidly overpowered in every Infinity Engine game. Ever hear of creeping doom, power word kill, maze, a million and one spells that equal you cant hurt me, time stop, do I need to go on? In BG2 my party only had two people in it who couldn't cast some type of spell, there was a reason for that. and just how many of the spells you listed are early/easily accessable damage spells to mages, and are melee/close combat relevant? I do admit Time Stop is perhaps the "most awesomest" ever spell, but it isn't even near this definition.
  19. if this would include the ability for the player to decide quality, resources used, and appearance of item I would sign this crafting yourself is fun too though (well it can be) , but I see no reason the two options couldn't co-exist
  20. I am all for a single humanoid (familiar/humunculus like in Shadow of Memories, so something easily blending in among humans, and having a proper personality of its own) whom you can ingame customize and name, even help it along its way of self-determination, but renaming everyone you met up with would be just too much
  21. ... examples? Except in Dragon Age I don't recall really strong mages/spells, especially on low levels At the opposite you find strong warriors and rogues slashing/knifing their way past hordes even as "beginners" everywhere
