Respectful discussion
LadyCrimson replied to Ralewyn's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah, my experience has often been that the most interesting topics can occur when the forum pace is slower. But my guess is that it'll pick up pretty heavily again as it gets close to actual release (and after, of course). So enjoy the relative slow period/calm while you can.- 37 replies

Emotional Impact
LadyCrimson replied to Felithvian's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
*watches video* ...well, without any context behind it (haven't played the game) all I can say is that it looks and sounds like soap opera melodrama. I'm not really hearing the awesome, emotional voice acting. That said, I can understand how, if there's a lot of set-up behind that scene that one is into already, the scene itself might have some impact. But the voice of the woman, for me, actually ruins the scene on its own. Overdone for my tastes. "Emotional impact" is going to vary wildly from person to person, in terms of subject matter, visual and tonal appeal, writing/backstory etc. Not something one can pin down or give examples of "this is the best!" or "this is the worst!". I could make a list of the (very few) times I was highly emotionally impacted by a game, and some might agree, while others would go "oh rly?" But Obsidian is, currently, pretty much the one company that makes/writes RPG characters that I do latch onto very strongly (I am, btw, much more into characters than main plots). So ... that's where my tastes run, I guess..and obviously, it's why I'm here. -
Armor Slots and Clothing
LadyCrimson replied to Xaratas's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I never really understood the need for tons of gear slots (outside of just wanting to play visual dress up, which is sometimes fun on its own)...to me, gameplay wise, tons of spots just means "more slots to put on kewl enchanted magical gear so I can feel more powerful." Which is fine of itself, but then you often may end up with less interesting/less strong enchantments to balance out the fact you can wear so many things. eg, I think one can also make a system that gives that sort of satisfaction (powerful) without needing earrings of seduction, leg warmers of protection, socks of thievery, scarf of charm, overcoat of debauchery, added on top etc. The more complicated the gear/clothing setup becomes, the more likely I'm personally going to eventually become annoyed/weary of thinking about/sorting all that gear when I just want to play the game. That's just me tho. So l'll go with the standard "helm/torso/pants/feet/gloves + 2 rings and 1 necklace" response. A belt or cape slot might be fine too, but I also won't mind if they're not there. -
I totally read this in a completely wrong, non-contextual way. I occasionally wonder if the forum blog-feature was active for members, here, if I'd put my ramblings in that, instead. Then I think, nah, this thread is much more fun.

Seen 5 episodes now I think. At this point the flashbacks are almost more interesting than the present timeline, simply because it leaves you wondering what went on there. I don't think he always kills the security guys...probably just disables them off-screen. But if they're shooting at him, then yeah, he kills them or at least maims them a whole lot. Self-defense and all, what are you gonna do. I think it's a tad more "realistic" then how some superheroes seem to be able to magically avoid killing anyone and everything except the one true baddie. And some of those goons, at least, probably know what their bosses are up to....yet don't quit/try to find a new client. That said, I'm sure the aghast "you're just a murderer" angle will be a part of the show's morality subplots again and again.

It's all about the phat loot, yo.

I'd have finished Torchlight2 with one character by now, if I wasn't such a collector of unique/sets/useful items and thus keep getting distracted by making new mule chrs. I hate inadequate aRPG inventories. And then I start playing the mules a little, so they can wear more gear, distracting me further.... But at least it means that for me, TL2 definitely got the items right. Well, mostly. In some ways, my fave item concept is still Diablo1...altho this is probably partly from nostalgia from all those weeks/months of hunting for that perfect Zodiac ring, King's Sword of Haste, random shrines to make that 1 durability Thinking Cap usable, etc. Sockets, legendaries, 50 different item sets are great and all, but sometimes, keeping it basic & simple works very well too. -
Needed new shower curtain. Bought one. Led to....side of tub was a little dirty from the old curtain, cleaned it. Standing on edge of tub to install curtain, noticed top of tile, walls, shower curtain rod/rings were dusty, cleaned. Led to mad frenzied "omg is that a speck" cleaning of whole bathroom. 2.5 hours later, new shower curtain installed. I'm not task-obsessive, nope. ...it is funny tho, how because I'm so short, despite some of my obsessive cleaning streaks, I can often forget about stuff like dust on top of high places until I stand on a stool and suddenly notice.

Re-reading the original Blue Adept series by Piers Anthony. I always love the parts about the Game on Proton.

Errands, dinner, cat-hugging session. Watched the rest of the "Arrow" episodes that were available on VOD. I still like it. I suspect it's killing some brain cells, but it's kind of like a guilty pleasure. Now time for a gaming session before snoozing.

That's what I'm doing in Normal, which makes it pretty easy. Plus the gambling guy...so easy to get orange items from him. Noticed that the quest dungeon/caves seem to respawn, don't know what triggers that. Cleared it out, left by the given portal, then went back on foot and re-entered to use an enchanter that was in there, and the non-quest monsters had spawned with the fog of war back. But the overland areas so far never respawn if you stay in the same Act at least. My Outlander looks like a pirate now. Pirate hat. Heh. The Embermage w/dual wands has been fun too. -
Magic Mechanics that annoy you

Totally agree. "Armor 1" - +4 to AC, clvl required, 1 "Armor 2" - +6 to AC, clvl required, 5 "Armor 3" - +8 to AC, clvl required, 8 ....or whatever stats the game uses. Argh. -
Update today?
LadyCrimson replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Darn...I forgot about that. Oh well, probably is best to have a little more time between updates...give them some working/breathing room. I can always paint the living room again in the meantime, or something. -
Go for the Atomic Fuchsia plush shag!

Watched the first episode of CW's "Arrow" series. Green Arrow. Haven't read the comics, nor did I see the Smallville stuff, but I kinda liked this new series. At least the premiere. Can definitely see the Batman influence. The bow skills are impossibly silly, of course, but whatever, it looks cool. At least it's entertaining. Dunno if the later episodes hold up ... and the flashback method as a persistent mystery/story telling thing wears on me these days ... but kinda cool. For, y'know, CW.

Of Magic and Muskets...
LadyCrimson replied to Monte Carlo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
That's so ludicrous and ridiculous! .... it's perfect! I can see something like that being really fun in a game. Altho it's probably more suited to a game outside of P.E. -

I personally never liked the memorization system of spells. As a limiter, it definitely works, just saying it's not my fave thing in the world. In terms of buffs, you could have it cost a lot of power/soul/stamina or whatever, but you can recast it on top of itself as long as you have the resource .... and each recast increases the duration. Not the benefit, just the duration. So if you feel like standing around for 10 minutes regening resource/recasting, you might get that light armor buff to last 15 minutes, but if you don't feel like standing around, you can use it like "usual" (eg, just before combat as a short term benefit) - your choice. Or as mentioned above, the always-on/always taking up resource route. -
Excellent. By the time I really need to switch, the Steam Linux library should be quite acceptable. And Window's has been bloated for a while now. Altho it does depend a little bit, in my limited experience, what kind of stuff you have on it. My HDD Win7 boot time is still quite fast, but that's because I have almost nothing that runs on bootup except the basic required system things.

I heard about that on the news as they were covering the election. Classy, Trump. But it is funny. I picture him with his wig all askew, drink in hand, ranting at office lackeys while posting on twitter.

Y'know the little remote gizmo one uses to lock/unlock a car? The battery in mine finally gave up the ghost. After 14 years or something. Seriously, I haven't changed it since I bought the car. Now that's one hearty little battery.

Oh? So if you go between Acts, they reset? That's interesting, thanks. Altho, like I said, there doesn't seem to be much reason to, outside of missing quests or if you're on the hardest difficulty perhaps (I'm just goofing around in Normal). -

Torchlight2 - once in Act2, starting to feel like the unique (orange) items are too numerous. Since enemies don't respawn (can't "farm") and you get what you get, I can see having them be more numerous for each playthrough. But it's starting to feel a bit Monty-Hallish. Minor nitpick tho...rather have too many then zero, like in D3, haha. Still a fun, light romp of a game. My ferret is all buffed out with xtra health/dmg plus healing, thorns, and summon imp spells and kicks butt on his own. Too cute. I still have to get through the original game. It's pretty fun, but almost too silly for me. -
I have no personal desire to play my PC games on a little tablet, whether in another room across the house or on a train/plane or in a park. There's such a thing as being too plugged in, and possibly, too integrated. I like separation.
