Reading about the horror of playing for 40 hours to unlock a character in a game....while I'm looking at a 28 DAY cool down before I can learn my last flame staff recipe in eso...

You just need to wait for that, not grind for it. Kind of a bonkers cool down though
Which is worse to a video game player, Waiting or grinding?

That it is lol

Waiting isn't so bad, you can do something else, after all :p  Luckily my only experience with grinding was the vanilla WoW PvP grind.  Which was pretty tame all things considered

Think of it this way: you can put those 28 days towards something productive, such as unlocking a bunch of heroes in Battlefront 2.

The whole review bombing thing is a pity, because by all accounts it's a solid game and genuinely fun to play. Oh well...

Someone just did the math (article), to unlock everything you have to play for 4,528 hours or fork up, on average (again because of the chance based system), 2100$

So even getting to 1/3 of the heroes will require almost 1000 hours worth of play or ~700$ up front on top of the retail price.

This is not a direction we'll want games to take imo..

That's 27 weeks or 51% of your year playing non-stop with no breaks.

Which means it is economically more prudent just to shill out the $2100 USD.

This is how they get you.

The backlash was more than deserved.

Nowadays, for me it is grinding :-P I still have no problem to grind for stuff, but I need to have some carrot, and have to see a reward in the end. I spent 750 hours in Star Ocean grinding for gear to be able to kill Ethereal Queen in 10 minutes and get the hardest battletrophies and Platinum. But some people were able to get it under 300 hours. Because they got better skills. And no MTs in the game.

It took me more than 5 years to achieve that. So if by some stupid decision I would start to play this game, I would be able to unlock all content without paying for lootboxes in 4 to 5 years. Bit knowing EA. The servers will be gone in 2 years. So people like me, will never unlock all the content.

On the other hand, there is nice saying. "If you starts to think about paying to skip the content of the game, instead of experiencing it, the content is ****."

But what is the reason/incentive to pay for ****ty content?

Well with my luck, I would have to fork out probably about 6300 EUR to unlock all the content. Well, compared to this ****, the For Honor 700EUR to unlock all the stuff, sounds like ****ing awesome deal...

Remember Watchdogs.

Trust no one.

Oh trust me, I don't trust them. :p

It's just that I always set my expectations low when it comes to Ubi games.

The only redeeming factor I am looking forward to when it comes to Far Cry 5 is some open world shooting and driving. Far Cry 2 had an awful story but my god do I still love that fictional African setting. I could just roam around, look at the scenery and do nothing else. Far Cry 5 looks like the perfect Southern U.S hiking simulator and I haven't played a game with a similar setting.

P.S: Far Cry 6 should be set in the barren wastelands of Antarctica...seriously, they had that in mind at some point.

There used to be a signature here, a really cool one...and now it's gone.

The AMA for Star Wars Battlefront is going on, if anyone's interested.

https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsBattlefront/comments/7d4qft/star_wars_battlefront_ii_dice_developer_ama/

There's a lot of vague "we're analyzing data" responses. Which probably don't mean anything to the typical user. This includes the concerns about Pay 2 Win, balance, and how long it takes for progression.

I'm personally really enthusiastic that the Associate Design Director (promoted recently to Design Director according to LinkedIN), Dennis Brannvall, says they're looking to change progression so that it's clearer and loot crates aren't a forced part of progression. Dennis has been very responsive with the community even through Battlefront 2015, so I'm very optimistic. And it's probably my biggest complaint.

Sadly, I don't see similar commitments to looking into fixing the balance concerns of the upgrade system. Instead they're going to focus on matchmaking right now to solve that.

I enjoyed it but I'm easy

Nice post but people should really stop posting essays on Twatter. It's annoying. ;(

I'm sure the guy had some interesting things to say, but I simply can't stand the formatting. Sorry, dev-dude. I'd really like to read it too -- he worked on the SWTOR F2P transition. He even has a link to his personal blog... but apparently cba to post this there.

"I've been working on Free-To-Play games for  years and lootboxes are pretty crucial to that business model working."

Load of bull. League of Legends made F2P work and popularized it and they didn't add lootboxes until a year ago - and even then the boxes are mainly earned through playing the game and while buying them is an option, the devs themselves discouraged it. Buying is useful if you lack either boxes or the keys needed to open them and don't want to wait for one or the other, but if you want something specific, buying it normally is the sensible choice.

Sure, not everything will be as popular as League, but that doesn't make lootboxes necessary. Didn't those things become the rage suddenly after Overwatch? I don't remember them being a thing before. GW2 had black lion chests, but those weren't the main attraction for the real money store either.

That Battletech stuff looks great. I too always forget about this game, though... probably because news are coming in so slow, dunno.

Just read starting from the top and down to the bottom. It's straightforward as heck.

Gee, why didn't I think of that?

I just mean the formatting isn't that bad, and reading it is straightforward.

Different strokes, I guess. To me it completely breaks the flow of reading by randomly breaking up the text into paragraphs that aren't immediately adjacent. It's great at preventing diagonal reading, too.

According to one article, which I am unable to find out, there was before Overwatch in 7 years about 17 "AAA" games with some sort of lootboxes. After Overwatch in about a year, there is already 22 "AAA" games with lootboxes. The culprit of this **** is pretty well visible.
