Anyone no what is going on with rangers in deadfire?

I personally would like to see them more of a melee / ranged hybrid instead of a ranged specialist.

If they dumped the pet I would be happy to. It was annoying at level up having a lot of the abilities focused on the pet instead of furthering your own abilities.

They where quite boring to use overall with there " fire and forget " play style.

How dare you sir. no animal companion. :) I didnt find them boring at all i like micromanaging positioning between my pet an ranger in melee. That play style was fun for me.

They have only mentioned one subclass so far and there are two to come. The one they mentioned is this: your animal companionhas died some time in the past but you now have the ability to summon a ghost animal companion or something like that. So a petless ranger with a summon. I personally dont like this because i like the animal companion but i know a lot of people, including you, will because then they can be a ranger without the animal companion. I to hope that one of the subclasses will be melee focused or pet focused instead of ranged. I play mainly melee rangers now in POE1. I had more fun with those.

There is a thread for subclasses that should keep this info up to date fyi.

I don't know what they're doing. What I'd like to see is a movement away from ranged specialization and to animal companion teamwork. Wouldn't break the lore of the class and would make melee rangers better than they are now.

Really hoping the Ghost Heart subclass has more melee components since he wont have a persistent pet.

PoE1 ranger can be pretty good in melee. Stunning Shots, combined with Swift Aim and dual wielding turns you into a stunlock-machine. Marked Prey is very good - and Wounding Shot is nice with two handers (check it out with Firebrand...). Stalker's Link with Stalker's Torc is good for melee, too. You don't need to spend any talent or ability points on your animal companion. Although you'd lose some very nice synergies if you skip it all I'd say.

Since there will be the Ghost Heart Lodge in PoE2 which only has a spirit-like animal companion which you can summon but don't need to, we already have a ranger who's more "self centered". :)

I think it's very likely that one of the other two subclasses goes the opposite way and does invest more into the animal companion(s).

I'd like to see a beastmaster subclass.

Barbarian-ranger, maybe? I would like to see some unique cross-class abilities.

a dual wielding focused ranger would be great with dual wielding level up talents to select

Rangers were one of the classes that was fun but I wished had more actives on the whole. I am more the type who wants no class to be a "set and forget" type class. Really hoping we see a pretty big rework with Rangers

Yes! That would be fantastic--just one or two unique abilities for each duel-class combination would be really great, through probably unlikely.

That would be nice. A bit like the old D&D rangers - Drizzt and stuff.

But I can't think of any plausible talents around dual wielding at the moment (besides two weapon style of course). Maybe more cool Full Attacks would be nice. In PoE things like Wounding Shot (or Strike) are Primary Attacks only - which is lame.

Would be a cool thing to have ranger abilities change depending on whether you were using a ranged or melee weapon. PoE1 ranger had a ton of modals which could easily be changed to active abilities to move him away from only primary attacks.

Wall of blades -- the character creates a whirling wall of blades that have a chance to strike anything along the path of movement. The effect also provides a bonus to deflection against disengagement attacks. However, it requires longer than normal to recover.

Sir, by dumping the pet, or making the ranger more melee-orientated, you take away the very things that make it unique. Rogue more than covers the DPS melee or melee/ranged hybrid front.

Not that I play with rangers much, but if any thing, the remaining subclass should probably be a dedicated archer.

Eh? Why is a melee oriented ranger with an animal companion taking away somethig? You can already do this in PoE1 and it's quite unique because of the "tandem"-mechanics of ranger & pet, flanking an enemy. I made a build for it and it works really well - and is totally different from rogues or fighters or whatever.

Nobody said there should be a subclass that focuses on melee AND have no animal companion.

We willl have one base class and three subclasses by the way.

Ye i agree melee rangers are fun because of  the tandem animal/ranger melee. That is why i generally play that way with rangers now. I think i will want to usually play single class ranger in POE2 but i can see some cool multis:

1. Ranger/Druid - so wolf companion and wolf spirit shift or any animal druid combo plus a few spells. With the new druid subclass that emphasizes spiritshift this should be pretty powerful melee combo.

2. Ranger/Rogue - because animal give you easy access to a flanking status effect.

3. Ranger/Cipher - at least the abilities that buff others in party so you can buff animal or those abilities that bounce off companions but do it to animal and the crushing beam with animal companion.

I really enjoyed the ranger class in POE and hope the other two subclasses adds to either the animal and or melee of ranger.

I'm looking forward to playing a gun ranger/priest of magran. :) Maybe Powder Burns will still be in the game...

Okay, yes, a melee ranger is very viable. Was just saying that archery is one of the points which make them unique as a class, so don't take that away. It's like saying "I want to see more offensive priest spells, so lets move away from healing and support".

*Waits for Boeroer to tell him that offensive priests are awesome*

The druid/ranger combo does indeed sound fun, just for the lols of going into combat as two animals.
