Why are you making POE in 2D? I saw your screenshots and the latest videos, POE graphics look extremely dated, like it's from 2001 or something.

No, no you're a "fan of this genre" yet. Son, your penitence is: Go play Ultima 4 (it's free!). Until you discover what makes it a classic RPG, you're not allowed to call yourself a fan.

Also, "like it's from 2001" will be taken as a compliment by a lot of the Kickstarter backers, including me.

Ultima 4? Good lord, what am I even looking at.  Okay, I'll keep trying to get into CRPG's then.  At least Divinity Original Sin got my foot in the door.  I guess I'll try to look past the graphics then.

Well, it was sold to the backers as a 2d isometric game with a somewhat nostalgic trip back to the older games like Icewind Dale and Baldurs gate series.  Including the graphics. So yeah, that's the whole point of the game.

Hope you enjoy the graphics cause it ain't going to change now :dancing:

"So they play that on their fascist banjos, eh?"

Actually I wouldn't even bother with Ultima at this stage. If you are interested, have a look at  baldurs gate 2 or Icewind dale 1&2. Ultima had a huge influence, no doubt but it's probably not going to be that enjoyable for most people at this stage, whereas the other games are still very playable. There are also some enhanced editions floating around with some minor tweaks. Beamdog is the company responsible.

D:OS is a strange choice in this regard - because this and PoE present themselves very similarly. D:OS works in 3D internally, as well, but the effect on screen often is very similar to the Infinity look. PoE basically tries to hide that it uses rendered graphics as source material, while D:OS tries its best to tell the player that it's not a 2D background, but they come from very similar starting points.

Whether you prefer the painted look of PoE or the rendered look of D:OS, is a question of taste, and PoE was expressly created to cater to people in favour of the former.

So we get the joy of playing on beautiful painted backgrounds.

Here I read the title, and was planning to comment "congratulations"... thread loaded, read OP... ouch.

I love D:OS too, but PoE blows it graphically out-of-the-sky. If it does gameplaywise as well we're all in for a massive treat.

Why are you making POE in 2D?

1) Because they promised to do so in the Kickstarter campaign that got the game funded.

2) Because pre-rendered background are much more beautiful than live 3D rendered ones made with the same budget.

3) Because pre-rendered background are in some ways more beautiful than what is even technically possible with live 3D rendering at this point.

4) Because pre-rendered backgrounds look the same on all graphics cards; people who have normal PCs

(rather than high-end gaming rigs) don't have to miss out on seeing the landscapes in their full glory.

5) Because the games to which this is supposed to be a spiritual successor, used isometric pre-rendered backgrounds too.

I put graphic on first place when talking about videogames and i missed a lot of games (expecially indies on steam) that i could enjoy only cause of that.

beaside of that, i think that POE looks awesome tho, and i don't really know in such an isometric game how 3d would improve the visual over 2d

Well its 3d in some parts to some degree such as when you pull the menu up. All isometric games are 2d but with some 3d aspects. Graphics are better than previous isometric games but that all depends due to art style personally I like what they have and BG2 was my second favorite due to the fact that it's more hand done than say using 3ds max sure that was used but not as much as most games. 3D is typically a world where it's three dimensional to where you can rotate the camera. Due to it being isometric the camera angles won't matter at all. Isometric are 2D for the most part anyways aside from a few aspects of some part of the game. Sorry for the rant sure nothing was probably useful lol.

I don't think you understand what 2D means. The models are 3D.

Just like Divinity.

In a design-fashion sense it sure looks dated (which is the point of making this game), but I think that PoE looks way better than divinity graphically.

Having just started playing Divinity: Original Sin (I had been avoiding it until recently, because it looked like a plain ol' ARPG and the previous Divinity games have been sorta meh) and I can't agree on this more.

This is not a jab at D:OS, it's a great game, and the graphics are good, and using DO:S format, they just couldn't have done the same thing as PoE, but if we're discussing which is more aesthetically pleasing, PoE wins hands down, all rounds.

I think that they should have made this game in 4D:

Actually I think D:OS looks fantastic. Better looking than many old IE games maps. But those are not the type of games that you play for the graphics.

Better than the IE games? Maybe, maybe; honestly most of for example BG2 isn't all that amazing, with some exceptions. I'd argue that IWD looks the best. But either way, better than (what we've seen) of PoE? No way, no how.

Alright, so, I haven't gotten that far in D:OS (I keep restarting and I really want to play this with my GF, but she doesn't have a compooter) so I'm just judging based on my experience so far.

There are some areas in BG2 that  were especially beautiful, mainly the underwater city and some areas in the Astral plane.  I agree with you about IWD and its' dungeons ,but D:OS areas have a  generally more bright and epic look to them and I prefer  this look over the dark medieval look of some of the older games areas.

About POE , I will wait to see it live on my screen, but it seems like the creature animations and the areas snapshots are amazing.

Cruel.

It was revolutionary for taking the cRPG genre beyond just murder-porn (though there is still a lot of that), but the game mechanics were pretty dreadful, even for the time.

Also D:OS graphics are rather meh... but who cares when you can kill enemies by electructing the water under them?

2D can still look good and be enjoyable.

From newer games I definitely recommend Shadowrun: Dragonfall Director's Cut. Very nice lil piece of game tbh.

Wasteland 2 is not a 2d but also very nice rpg.

From older definitely Planescape: Torment for story part. If Baldur's Gate then start with BG2. There are also Fallout 1 & 2 but I recommend 2.

From more recent but "very old styled" games Avernum: Escape From the Pit is also decent.

Also POE looks very very nice because it's 2D done the way it is.

I wanted to play Dragonfall but it's a shame it was english only, considering that Returns was translated  ;(

I missed that masterpiece cause of that

Man, you'll be missing out big time, then. They're not doing localization because it's not worth it any more, so they're not doing it for Shadowrun: Hong Kong, either.

When the first Shadowrun Returns game came out, I thought it was decidingly meh. Shadowrun: Dragonfall was quite 'alright', but Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut is just amazing.

They are really displaying that iterative, evolutionary approach I so very much love when it comes to games, expansions and sequels. I can't wait for Shadowrun: Hong Kong. They "only" raised 1,2 mil on Kickstarter, but seeing as how they were already working on the game, that should be a tremendous boost and it's looking even better than Dragonfall Director's Cut.

Your English isn't utterly terrible, man, you shouldn't have a big problem with Shadowrun, really. If nothing else, see it as practice.
