India criminalizes gay sex

Seriously WTF :aiee:

The Indian supreme court has now passed a law that criminalizes consensual same sex. They have based it on a 150 year old colonial law that states

" a same-sex relationship is an "unnatural offence" and punishable by a 10-year jail term"

I hope the Indian parliament overturns this as I think this an egregious violation of the humans rights and dignity of India's gay population. The Indian supreme court should be embarrassed and ashamed by this ruling

IMO it demonstrates more Homophobia than what the Russians did recently with there anti-homophobic laws

I misread it as Indiana criminalizes same-sex. I need sleep.

So they're going to lock up gay people on a single sex institution for years and hope that they reform?

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

That was very clever and an absolutely astute observation, nice one :)

Are they going to deploy a team of highly specialized police officers in every city, eagerily inspecting every suspective anus-activity? Yeah, sounds totally reasonable.

Blame the Brits.

Don't look at me. I interpret our cultural dislike of sex to include any interest in where other people want their junk to go, provided both parties are consenting.

Technically India undecriminalised gay sex rather than banned it, since they ruled that the old colonial era law was still in force, and courts cannot make law.

Now awaiting people pouring Indonesian curries (mmm Rendang) down the drain in protest in NYC instead of Latvian vodka.

Well, this thread was a wash.

Oh yeah, primitive third worlders (what you gonna do 'bout it, Hindustan? Well? Yeah, that's what I thought.) are primitive and morally/ethically bankrupt and all that jazz.

Shh. We don't want them to know how stupid they look.

India needs a hobby.

They have plenty of hobbies. They make more movies than anyone else in the world. Though I guess making the same movie 900 times in a year might leave you needing a hobby... Maybe they'll come up with a new plot for their movies. Something that isn't a musical love story... Nah, that'd be crazy.

A proud day to be Indian indeed.

Guys one more important point from me on this topic. I agree with the sentiment from some that they won't actually enforce this law or be able to police it but that's not the point. This law will lead to discrimination against the gay community in India from homophobic people as a certain perspective has now been legalised that "your lifestyle is unnatural". That's the biggest risk. We really need all societies in our modern world to respect the rights and dignity of all minority groups

What disappointments me the most is the lack of empathy from groups of people that were victims of historical discrimination and are now quite happy to pass laws that discriminate against other minority groups. We also see this in certain African countries that have criminalised homosexuality

Kinda ironic that the Archbishop of Mumbai essentially stated that being homosexual is not a sin. The Catholic Church being the progressive voice here.

That is interesting. As I mentioned before what is also important to note about this Indian development is this legal decision is not the view of the Indian government but rather judges in the supreme court. So I'm hopeful that this will be overturned, its the only humane and reasonable thing to do

In this case, legislated, not overturned. /stickler

I don't get this lawyer talk Nep ;(

What is it called if a decision by a supreme court gets nullified by the sitting government?

I think, local forum members don't known too how racist they look.

As if normal Indian wear that sort of thing all the time.

You don't turn up to an anti-gay rally wearing what appears to be an embroidered shirt with pearls on it.

I've never really understood why people get so upset about where other people stick their bits. OK, if the other person is screaming "No" and hitting me, then I can understood third parties getting all prissy and judgemental over it. If, on the other hand, the other person is being welcoming, or at least not actively resisting, then I can't really see what the problem is. It's not like I'm doing it the street. Well, not always.

I guess in some ways it's lucky that there are people who're so concerned over my morality that they're willing to march up and down a street with a placard, but I'll admit that it leaves me somewhat bemused. Surely we should be more concerned that people aren't getting my bits put in them without their consent rather than what bits that person owns?

I dunno, I just can't help but think people might have their priorities wrong. I don't really understand why that chap with the orange turban and the FABULOUS shirt is so concerned over the fact that Deepak down the street gets drunk sometimes and puts his bits in Sanjay instead of Sunitha. Nobody's telling Mr Orange Turban that he has to put his bits in Sanjay too, if he doesn't want to.

Remember: Argue the point, not the person. Remain polite and constructive. Friendly forums have friendly debate. There's no shame in being wrong. If you don't have something to add, don't post for the sake of it. And don't be afraid to post thoughts you are uncertain about, that's what discussion is for.
