BruceVC
If the campaign doesn't reach its target, they still get the money; and there's no legal obligation to refund anybody who donates if their attempt fails. Besides, I'm more than a little certain that you'd need a pretty solid studio to develop an actual Homeworld game; a mobile-app developer? Yeah... who in his right mind would even pledge to that? Okay but they do do desktop application development as well. Isn't a PC game just another application? I am not saying there credentials are fantastic but they aren't complete dunces when it comes to development "Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss” John Milton "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” - George Bernard Shaw "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. AwesomeOcelot
Game development is specialized as is much of application development, you couldn't just swap the people who work at Autodesk for the people work at Adobe, or the people who work on MS Office for the people who work on Windows. Some of them could work on both, others could if given enough time although they wouldn't necessarily be as good as an experienced developer, but some would not be able to. Someone writing database software isn't going to just be able to jump right into writing shaders.
cyberarmy
Call of Duty: Aliens preview Knew it would be another uninspiring Gearbox game. I was worried till i read this part, "That's a big problem - and makes it all the more of a tough sell given that it's being released within a week of Dead Space 3, the third instalment in a series that has consistently ticked all the boxes for gaming sci-fi horror fans" Dead Space 3 is far from it, its just Gears of War with different guns and enemies. Just played its demo and its sadly following Resident Evils path to action, instead survival&horror elements. Plus EAs microtranstations and game being a direct port without any real PC thingy i don't really think it's going to cast any shadow over Aliens. So im waiting more serious previews or reviews before jumping off the train. Nothing is true, everything is permited.
Hurlshort
Omerta - City of Gangsters Demo is out It looks intriguing. I like that people keep comparing the combat to Xcom, although it sounds like it isn't on the same level. I'll give it a whirl when I get home. Eh, after playing the demo, my attention has waned. The combat is super clunky.

The combat is super clunky. Damn, thats not good. I wanted to like this game. Do you think the bad combat is due to the fact its a demo? Or is this as the full version is going to be "Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss” John Milton "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” - George Bernard Shaw "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. Hurlshort
The combat is not going to get better with the full version, the whole system is awkward. The game as a whole is just not that appealing. It might be a decent bargain bin pickup down the road.
Malcador
Will have to try it and see what makes it so clunky and awkward. who in his right mind would even pledge to that? Good question, seems like a good way for them to pocket that cash at least, heh. Wonder if the Relicnews folks could scrounge up some to buy it and give it to Relic or something Why has elegance found so little following? Elegance has the disadvantage that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra
Mamoulian War
One more game from OE which I will be not buying now Eh, you wouldn't have been buying it anyway since it is/was steamworks. Might end up buying it if the steamworks gets nuked since I couldn't care less about Uplay so long as it isn't the always online variety, else won't, but that's status quo ante. Did not knew it was Steamworks only before ... *sighs* Sent from my Stone Tablet, using Chisel-a-Talk 2000BC. Mamoulian War
Folks, you need to get your priorities in order. Is it really more important to you to see Ubisoft fail than it is to see Obsidian succeed? Because you refusing to buy South Park because of the publisher is going to hit the developer a heck of a lot harder than anyone else. I dislike Ubisoft's DRM policies as much as many of you, but I'm not willing to throw Obsidian under the bus to make my point. Hurlshot you never cease to amaze me with your irrefutable logic. Once again I find myself agreeing with you. Whats more important, letting Obsidians reputation and revenue suffer due to an issue with Ubisofts DRM policy or buying the game that will only be good for Obsidians continued financial longevity. This should be a no-brainer for anyone who actually supports Obsidian and projects like PE. Finally I would support Ubisoft anyway as I like the studio. There DRM policy has given me very few issues, and the few I experienced were not insurmountable. I think the worst was where I couldn't logon for 2 hours. It was no big deal. I paid 140 USD for PE, and I will not pay a single cent to UbiSoft... And I have every single OE game ever created and every single game OE guys worked on before the creation of OE, minus newest Steamworked games... I simply refuse to rent my games... I think I have give more support to Obsidian, than most of the people on this board... Sent from my Stone Tablet, using Chisel-a-Talk 2000BC. Calax
App developer turns to crowdfunding to buy Homeworld IP from THQ Hah, right. Those rights are part of the relic group yeah? TSBasilisk
As I understand it, while Relic developed the games it was Vivendi that owned the actual IP. THQ acquired Relic and Homeworld separately, meaning they are not a package deal. Homeworld and other inactive IPs will be part of another auction. THQ is large enough that it's going to take more than two auctions to finish the gutting the bankruptcy process. You can bring people in for those tasks of course, but unless you're building a whole new team you'll at minimum have potential integration problems. OTOH I'd think that a specialist database software writer could be very useful, as there is a lot of database manipulation and usage in a typical game, for something like Homeworld you'd have lots of ship classes and weapons as examples. alanschu
I'm actually quite surprised how flexible some of our programmers can be, especially the more senior ones. It seems like those guys can be put on pretty much any programming task and be quite proficient at it.
