Guns kill mages.... mage hunter class?

Recommended Posts

With update 5 we found out that guns>mage shields. I would love to see a whole class or faction that revolves around this concept. It would he really cool to see the guns utilized for a mage hunter class or faction.

I would rather be able to craft a character into a mage-hunter instead of that being an explicit class. It seems a bit restrictive as the title really pigeon holes the personality, skills, abilities, etc...

Grandiose statements, cryptic warnings, blind fanboyisim and an opinion that leaves no room for argument and will never be dissuaded. Welcome to the forums, you'll go far in this place my boy, you'll go far!

I do like the idea of firearms being a mage-killer's weapon while still being crude enough that swords and armour aren't obsolete yet. Gameplay-wise, archers usually end up being your mage killers anyway, and I think the combination of the ranged combat role with this lore that guns are especially good at penetrating magic defenses is a sensible one.

One thing I think was interesting in the Recluce novels was that mages could ignite gunpowder, which made guns essentially useless against mages, until the invention of shells, since mages abilities couldn't penetrate Iron. Something to think about.

The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.

If I recall, firearms in this setting are much closer range than what you I think are suggesting.

I don't mean snipers, if that's what you're suggesting. Archers in RPGs are often your most optimal mage-killers in combat encounters, from the old infinity engine games through to the likes of Dragon Age. I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a firearm to have the same range as a shortbow and fill much the same role in combat.

Depends on the power of the mage in this setting, an assasin specialised in taking out mages makes sense. But best mage-killer would simply be another mage. Exept if we have nation that frowns upon unregulated use of magics and they have like secret police..like Templars in DAO.

If magic is merely the utilization of the power in your soul in PE, wouldn't that make everyone a wizard? Yes, some to a lesser degree than others, but even so...if you accept this as truth, does that not also make everyone a mage-hunter? :p

So, although I do enjoy the way they are carefully and specifically weaving firearms into the world, I don't suspect a clear cut mage-hunter class on the horizons. :)

I guess the idea of the gun is some what more an interrupt method, since its sorta a one shot ordeal. I mean, sure it should hurt, but we shouldn't be killing squishes within a couple of turns when we let them armour up, just because we have a gun.

Moreso though, I'm not sure I like the idea of well defined classes. If I pick warrior, I think it makes more sense that I get benefits learning/using warrior abilities, not that I can't ever learn magic, ever. I'd also think those benifits/negatives assosiated with the classes could be race based. Lets add some weird bard type race that doesn't get any, while humans are better off being pure classes (as an example).

I mean, personally, I think BG was a great game in spite of its limitations around this, not because of. Just my personal opinion though. :)

That depends entirely on a game balance we know nothing about. Mages could have ways of protecting themselves from spells yet no way to protect themselves from gunslingers.

Exactly. I just expressed what is my logical assumption. Mage best knows how mage works. So far nothing prevents mage to use guns. I would like idea of playing a techo-mage. Mage that uses complex-tech to amplify his/her power.
