Purkake Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 (edited) While I don't agree with Slowtrain's limp wristed complaints, I can't help but feel that this is exactly the Bioshock 1 formula repeated again. You have a new philosophy - jingoism, a new setting for crazy isolated city - sky, new splicers, new big daddy replacements and of course the ever popular magic on one trigger, gun on the other. The only thing that they seem to have added is the AI companion. Edited September 22, 2010 by Purkake
Rostere Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 "Gun in one hand, magic in the other" was a good formula in Undying and I don't see why it suddenly shouldn't work. But of course then there are other things in Bioshock you could complain about. "Well, overkill is my middle name. And my last name. And all of my other names as well!"
Slowtrain Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 (edited) Bioshock is a financially successful franchise, Daikatana isn't. A crying shame! John Romero deserved better. Edited September 22, 2010 by Slowtrain Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.
Slowtrain Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 It does look pretty cool though, the whole floating city thing. Your totally fab, Hurlie, but someday I'm going to fall out of my chair when I see a negative "this game looks like ****" post from you. Don't keep me waiting! Slowtrain Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Bioshock is a financially successful franchise, Daikatana isn't. A crying shame! John Romero deserved better. No he didn't, you make a crappy dated game, you suffer the consequences. Well, to be fair, the only reason the game was dated was because it took him about 10 years to complete it. That's what happens when you're a perfectionist making a sophisticated shooter around a time-traveling sword. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. Purkake Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 None of that changes what I said. At some point you have to peek out of the crazy fantasy world of infinite development time and face the real world.
Tigranes Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Because we're all mad, maaaaaaaad and Purkake is our Lonk the Sane. What was so bad about Daikatana anyway, from anyone that's actually played it? I sort of missed the initial furore around it, at the time I didn't really give a rat's butt about shooters (and still don't...) Let's Play: Icewind Dale Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Icewind Dale II Ironman (Complete) Let's Play: Divinity II (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG1 (Complete) Let's Play: Baldur's Gate Trilogy Ironman - BG2 (In Progress)
Nepenthe Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Rumor: Bioware Montreal working on military shooter (German) I read the source, which refers to EA Montreal... Which are two different studios? :/ In fact, according to this: http://www.techvibes.com/blog/bioware-to-e...r-mass-effect-3 Bio Montreal has basically a skeleton crew. vs. EA Montreal Nope, the source clearly states Bio Montreal. They're hiring those people and you can read it on the Bio website. If by source, you mean the German article you linked to, I agree. If by source, you mean the (apparently now removed) cghub listings, I didn't see Bioware mentioned there either. I'm now looking at the postings on the Bioware page, and all I'm seeing are a bunch of Mass Effect related openings (just like yesterday). There's obviously some incredibly obvious site/page I'm missing, because this still doesn't seem to make an iota of sense to me. You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that? Reapercussions

Niten_Ryu Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 "Gun in one hand, magic in the other" Bioshock 2 have that system and it worked great IMO. It was great to have telekinesis (especially tier 3 ) and shotgun at the same time. I liked Bioshock 2 more then original Bioshock, especially since combat mechanics were better. I bet I like Bioshock Infinite(s) too as I love extreme views of some philosophy as main villain. Both Andrew Ryan (objectivism) and Sophia Lamb (utilitarianism) were good villains. Bishock infinite(s) will probably be exceptionalism and nationalism - "It is our Holy Duty to guard against the foreign hordes". I love it Let's play Alpha Protocol My misadventures on youtube.
Purkake Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 The ideas are good, but the execution on Lamb was extremely bad. It feels like a waste of good ideas to me.
HoonDing Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 A crying shame! John Romero deserved better. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.
WorstUsernameEver Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Details about the Devil May Cry reboot.
Slowtrain Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 What was so bad about Daikatana anyway, from anyone that's actually played it? I sort of missed the initial furore around it, at the time I didn't really give a rat's butt about shooters (and still don't...) It really wasn't a bad game. The problem was that it took so long to complete and ROmero was making such high promises about it that it became kind of a running joke, similar to DNF. When it was finally released, or as some might say, when Romero finally gave up on it, and it wasnt the greatest game ever after all, everyone piled on Romero. The idea for the time was actually pretty complex and it was one of the first shooters to have AI companions. SO it did have it plus points. If it had taken 2 years to develop instead of 5 (or whatever) it probably would have been considered in a much more positive light. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. Ok, now I'm thinking of a freaky collaboration between Peter Molyneux and Jon Romero. Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.
Hurlshort Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 (edited) It does look pretty cool though, the whole floating city thing. Your totally fab, Hurlie, but someday I'm going to fall out of my chair when I see a negative "this game looks like ****" post from you. Don't keep me waiting! I took that stance on Dante's Inferno. It still bothers me that they pillaged an epic of classical literature. People complain about what Bethesda did to Fallout, but I have a hard time putting that in the same class as the abomination that is a hack and slash version of the Divine Comedy. Tel Aviv Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Well, I'm pleased as punch Stephen Russell is voicing Booker DeWitt. It's silly, but that alone makes me excited for the game.
entrerix Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 i loved system shock 2, i really really like bioshock, and I kinda liked bioshock 2. if things continue on this path then i will tolerate bioshock 3, dislike bioshock 4, and hate bioshock 5. lets hope something turns this all around system shock 3? A new IP? cmon levine, i know you've got it in you! Killing is kind of like playin' a basketball game. I am there. and the other player is there. and it's just the two of us. and I put the other player's body in my van. and I am the winner. - Nice Pete.
Majek Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 The second Vanquish demo looks even more fun that the first. Hopefully the game will live up to expectations so i can buy it. 1.13 killed off Ja2.
Morgoth Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 Played the Vanquish demo but didn't like it at all. Gonna wait for the Castlevania demo next week. Rain makes everything better.
