Trustin Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Do you guys think it would be better to pick a starting background or to pick recruit on the first play through? Cause recruit sounds more interesting, but it would be nice to start out with some skills
zkylon Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 I think i'll do a straight freeagent (was it?) and just run and gun the first time through. Just so i've got an incentive to play it a second as stealthy rookie and third time as whatever suits my taste then. If i'm a lame rookie it'll make sneaking harder I'm just doing it that way because i have little interest in playing it like a shooter and if i don't force me to at least try it i'll never know
Trustin Posted May 25, 2010 Author Posted May 25, 2010 That actually sounds like a good idea, I was thinking of doing stealth first, but since Im getting the assault pack with my preorder, why not use it
Oner Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 IMO start with a "normal" background so the goofy stuff doesn't mess up the atmosphere the first time. Zkylon: Freelancer. Trustin Posted May 25, 2010 Author Posted May 25, 2010 so the recruit background is going to have goofy stuff in it? I thought it was just people commenting on your rookie status
Gfted1 Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 I just read somewhere that the recruit background offers more dialog choices. And beating the game and playing on Veteran opens more still. "I'm your biggest fan, Ill follow you until you love me, Papa"
Oner Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Well, I imagine people berating you for your inexperience will be more on the fun side of the scale rather than on the serious. Itkovian Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 I intend to start as a field agent, perhaps freelancer. If I enjoy myself I'd then make a rookie then a veteran. Itkovian
WorstUsernameEver Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Will definitely start as a freelancer with points in stealth, pistol and technical aptitude (I believe that was the name of the hacking/gadget skill), maybe I'll put a couple of points in martial arts as a failsafe. Definitely will try rookie too for one of my playthroughs.
Starwars Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 My first playthrough will be some sort of stealthy guy. Whether it be Field Agent or Freelancer with a build like WorstUserNameEver, I don't know yet... I gotta say the tech specialist sounds pretty fun as well. Shotguns and gadgets, hell yeah. vault_overseer Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 (edited) I had a post somewhere about a Bourne-like character.... EDIT: Found it: http://forums.obsidian.net/index.php?showtopic=54129 Edited May 25, 2010 by vault_overseer
Raithe Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Well technically (just to be a little pedantic), Bourne would be a Soldier with a bunch of Martial Arts added on... "Cuius testiculos habeas, habeas cardia et cerebellum."
vault_overseer Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Well technically (just to be a little pedantic), Bourne would be a Soldier with a bunch of Martial Arts added on... I think he's closer to Field Agent
Oner Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Bourne has 10 points in every skill. Giveaway list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DgyQFpOJvyNASt8A12ipyV_iwpLXg_yltGG5mffvSwo/edit?usp=sharing What is glass but tortured sand?Never forget! '12.01.13.
Orogun01 Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Well technically (just to be a little pedantic), Bourne would be a Soldier with a bunch of Martial Arts added on... Actually it would be a soldier turned super-spy. You actually can do that in AP, any change in career will also reflect on the conversations. I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"* *If you can't tell, it's you.
Raithe Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Film Bourne - Army Officer who gets volunteered into a secret program, and gets trained to blend in and assassinate people. So soldier type, tough, with martial arts and sneaky stuff added to it... Book Bourne - Army Officer (with Academic background), who loses his wife and kids, throws himself into a vietnam special operations group.. then volunteers to go undercover to track down another assassin because he has nothing to live for.. Soldier type with some martial arts, sneaky and a touch more technical.. (And yes dammit, I wanted to see either The Jackal or Medusa turn up in the films at some point..) "Cuius testiculos habeas, habeas cardia et cerebellum."
Alpha Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 i would like to play without AP skill to made the first playthrough last more.
Hell Kitty Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 I plan on playing blindfolded to increase the challenge.
Joseph Bulock Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Well, I imagine people berating you for your inexperience will be more on the fun side of the scale rather than on the serious.Joseph Bullock once said there will be fourth wall breaking, but not if it was in Vet or Rec. The veteran stuff has what will feel more like the director's cut sort of stuff, the goofier stuff, and the VO that was just too distracting or over the top for the first experience. The recruit will mainly funny things where they make fun of you for being a total noob. I'd recommend doing a play through on a "standard" background, then recruit, than veteran, not because of the dialog choices, but because with three playthroughs, you will see a decent chunk of the branching content. Not nearly all of it, but with three playthroughs, you'll see just how big of a game you have with AP. My blood! He punched out all my blood! - Meet the Sandvich
mrmumbles Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 I'd recommend doing a play through on a "standard" background, then recruit, than veteran\\ I like this suggestion, will do.

One other question, (directed towards you or one of the other devs), do the characters comment on your background if you pick one of the standard ones? like if I picked freelance would I hear different lines then my buddy who is picking soldier

I'm probably gonna pick Freelancer all three times unless the other backgrounds have some influence ala Mass Effect. If not, i just feel better allocating points myself.
