FO:NV: The Return of Gameplay Mechanics Discussion

I didn't hate completely the subway tunnels, but that's mostly because they nailed the look of the actual DC Metro, which I take to work everyday.

But, yeah, if you didn't use fast travel and took them every time you needed to get to a downtown location, they would get old extremely fast.

The big problem was that the quest markers seemed to stop working propperly while in the metro, showing a way ahead where there was none, pointing the wrong way, etc, which meant lots and lots of wading aimlessly about.

I don't think they stopped working; they just didn't always show the best/quickest path.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Bah. I come back and it's nothing but strawman arguments and anti-story pro-larping appologists. Seriously.

Furries may make me kinda uncomfortable, but every larper I've ever come across has been a totally self centered, uncompromising, and unrelenting @$$hole.

I should really stop looking over the fence so much. :E

But for all of us, there will come a point where it does matter, and it's gonna be like having a miniature suit-head shoving sticks up your butt all the time. - Tigranes

Newsbits from the march (don't ask...) issue of PC Gamer UK :

http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.ph...073985&st=0

theres a huge preview in this months PC gamer, just got my subscription copy

loads of screens, look very similar to fallout 3 and uses a lot of the same art...but lots of new art too

features a new optional hardcore mode that addresses many things that were modded in..

need to drink water

ammo has weight

healing isn't instant

normal node is as per fallout 3

storyline involves NCR versus slavers versus new vegas residents

you're not a vault dweller, but you get given a pip boy by someone who is..and seemingly a vault suit since the shots show one

theres an M4 lookalike assault rifle

it mentions special moves for melee weapons in VATS specifically a move for a golf club called "fore" which seems to be a groin shot smile.gif

the hoover dam is in and supplying electricity..hence the city in the trailer

it mentions a quest to rescue a ghoul from some supermutants who can then be a companion

I dont know if the groin shot is back or if its just the special move for that weapon..it doesn;t make it clear

nightkin and geckos are back

most shots are combat...against supermutants, geckos etc...some supermutants look like the fallout 3 models , others are new models , theres a female one with a 50s hairstyle smile.gif who apparently is one of their leaders

a few pics of NPCs..a guy with a beard and straw hat, a ghoul an NCR ranger

new weapons are the golf club, the m4 lookalike and a big gun, which is shown blasting some mutants, is held like a minigun, with a backpack...but its not a minigun

the only pic of new vegas itself is concept art and not a screen

some location shots include a huge model dinosaur advertising a hotel, some satellite dishes, an array of solar panels

a character gen shot(i think) showing a "vigour machine" instead of the skill book...looks like some kind of thing you'd see in a fairground...50s style of course

ceasars legion are the slavers..one of the 3 main factions...

hmmm it mentions a topless revue in a casino in a town called primm....I'll believe that when I see it, lol

thers a supermutant base called black mountain

NCR base is mccarran airport

a town called fremont

the hoover dam

cesars legion are based at the strip

There is a map as well showing the areas which will be in the game. These include Area 51 and the Hoover Damn. I think there will be some reference to Mothership Zeta in Area 51, if not a whole new Alien quest.

It also says your stats get tested by a 'vigour machine', with a picture of it. The best way I can describe it is that it looks like the 'Love Tester'(or something like that), which is in the corner of Moes Tavern in the Simpsons.

There is also a picture of a child stood near a jukebox with a dog next to her. (Dogmeat?)

Luckily just speculation. For now.
the alien, area 51 stuff seems to be speculation...as they say is wasn't in the demo they were shown, but Nevada wouldn't be Nevada without it

Sounds awesome so far. o:)

God I hope Obsidian can do something to companion AI. I don't think it can be any worse than it was in FO3.

But based on this non-confirmed information, I like FO-NV already about ten times more than FO3 o:)

Never played any Fallout, but from what I understand the skills were capped to a score of 100 in Fallout 3 when there was a way higher cap in Fallout and Fallout 2. One big problem with that new system is that a character always ended up with a perfect score in each skill by the end of the game, which destroyed the purpose of character's customization. People here were hoping for changes that would make topping all the skills impossible.

Here's a summary of all the info so far (I keep updating it):

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Au...agazines_emerge

* There is an optional hardcore mode, the character needs to drink water, ammo has weight, healing isn't instant etc. Normal mode is more similar to Fallout 3 gameplay.

* The storyline is focused on the New California Republic vs. Caesar's Legion vs. New Vegas residents.

* You are not a vault dweller but are given a Pip-Boy by someone who is one.

* There is a screenshot of a vault suit as well.

* There is an assault rifle looking like the M4, as well as a new big gun with a backpack, held like a minigun.

* There are special moves for melee weapons in VATS - specifically a move for a golf club called "Fore" which seems to be a groin shot.

* The Hoover Dam is in the game and is supplying electricity to the city.

* There is a quest to rescue a ghoul from some super mutants. The ghoul can then become your companion

* The Geckos are back.

* There are both dumb and intelligent super mutants, including the elite Nightkin.

* Some super mutants look similar to the ones in Fallout 3, while others are new. There is e.g. a female super mutant with a 1950s hairstyle who apparently is one of their leaders.

* Screenshots include a guy with a beard and straw hat, a ghoul an NCR Ranger

* The only picture of New Vegas itself is concept art and not a screenshot

* Some location screenshots include a huge model dinosaur advertising a hotel, some satellite dishes, an array of solar panels

* A character generation shot showing a "vigour machine" instead of the skill book

* NCR base is the McCarran Airport, Caesar's Legion is based in the Vegas Strip, while super mutants are based in a place called Black Mountain. There is also a town called Fremont and another called Primm. A topless reuve is mentioned as being in the latter.

* NCR Ranger armor is similar to a brown combat armor with sleeves, there are concept arts of a Ranger

* Skils have a bigger effect on conversation choices. E.g. someone with a high Explosives skill may be able to have a coversation about explosives where appropriate.

* There is a Reputation system in adition to Karma.

-I fight the good fight with explosives

-[Explosives] So you fight the good fight with explosives?

-I see you are a goddamn retard

Okay so my subscriber copy of PC Gamer UK arrived, and they have an eight-page article on New Vegas. Salient points:

- First-person action RPG with the same engine as Fallout 3 (sorry, Van Buren fans).

- Set in the Mojave wastelands. Vegas didn't get many nukes. More intact buildings, as well as desert vegetation. Vegas itself is mostly intact.

- You don't play a Vault Dweller (or descendant of one) but a courier, left for dead and saved by a friendly robot.

- The overarching story is a struggle between the locals, Caesar's Legion (a faction of slavers from the east) and the New Californian Republic. Vegas itself is mostly intact.

- Both karma and reputation are tracked. If I'm reading it right there's separate reputations for each of the settlements, as in 1 and 2.

- All dialogue options are shown to all players, regardless of whether you have the stats to succeed or not, though there's no punishment for failure.

- Bartering is not just lower prices but negotiating for better rewards.

- VATS returns, and melee weapons have special moves in it. The golf club has "Fore!", which is a shot to the golf balls (so to speak) that knocks the opponent down. Weapons also now have knock-back upon death, with shotguns sending mans flying.

- Super Mutants return, but in two varieties - the smarter ones from Fallout 1, and the idiot ones from Fallout 2. On at least one occasion you can convince them to fight amongst themselves.

- New weapons include what appears to be an M4 and a grenade machinegun.

- Followers can be managed through a context-sensitive menu, with orders like "follow", "stay" or "attack".

- Hardcore Mode! In this mode, Stimpacks heal over time (as opposed to instantly), combat is tougher, ammo has weight and you can suffer dehydration, so keep some water on you!

One of the screenshots has a Super Mutant with a blonde wig and pink heart-shaped glasses.
