Monte Carlo Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 I run a fairly chunky gaming machine with two Nvidia 9 series video cards. It's in a nice big box with two fans and it only gets noticably noisy when I run very high end games with all the bells and whistles. Most of the games I play I can't even hear the PC, although it can be a bit F15 when it's booting up. Obviously, most gaming rigs are designed with cooling and noise reduction in mind anyway, well the decent ones are.

Monte Carlo Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 ^ the entire charm of these threads is the rambling pages of off-topic rambling about medieval medicine and console game noise reduction. On-topic, the weapons skill trees look OK, am wondering how potent they are if you choose to mix and match rather than specialise in one route, maybe alanschu can elaborate? The news that only fighters can carry shields is a bit laden with WTF tablets, but there you go. I like combat-orientated rogues and was hoping to make a melee orientated thief type character, this review makes that look a bit difficult, the rogue looks like a strictly flanking / sneak attack combatant to complement tank fighters. As for archery, not really my bag but it looks interesting, hopefully theres an NPC archer you can develop into the team mage-killer. Cheers MC
fastpunk Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Up to this point, the hype campaign for DA:O has had way too much pointless PR regurgitation (plus the embarrassing 'new s**t' trailers). Thank God for the Gamebanshee article, else I wouldn't even consider this game. It's a thorough piece, very few previews are like that (wish they did one like that on AP as well). Seriously, good job Gamebanshee! "We do not quit playing because we grow old, we grow old because we quit playing." - Oliver Wendell Holmes
Monte Carlo Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 ^Yep, one of the interesting things about this title is how, apres-release, will the marketing look retrospectively? Will console players hoover it up in their gazillions because the marketing was aimed so squarely at them? Will they ever use Marilyn Manson ever again? Am prepared to bet five gold pieces and a +1 Mace that the DA2 marekting will be more, er, traditional. I'm sure that the game will be a tremendous commercial success, but on what platform(s)? Cheers MC
Oner Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 The news that only fighters can carry shields is a bit laden with WTF tablets, but there you go. I saw a shield talent tree for rouges on the DA wiki. http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Rogue By the way Giveaway list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DgyQFpOJvyNASt8A12ipyV_iwpLXg_yltGG5mffvSwo/edit?usp=sharing What is glass but tortured sand?Never forget! Monte Carlo Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 ^ Mebbe I read it wrong, alternatively the shield combat skill tree could be warrior only. I know I'm not playing D&D, but when I make combat-orientated rogues I like a shield in the inventory for when it's time to tank. Cheers MC
Guest Slinky Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 TenTonHammers interview with Dragon Age's Lead Designer Mike Laidlaw here Ten Ton Hammer: What drove you to make this game so much darker than Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate? They were D&D based products and you were constrained a bit by the license, but why did you decide to make it so much darker? Laidlaw: To be quite frank, what we're seeing - and what we recognized in ourselves - is a maturation of the gamer. As a company, we've gone from a bunch of young bucks working in a garage to a group of adults in their 30s with kids. With that in mind, I think there's a shift in thinking where people want something a bit more mature to chew on. They want something challenging in both the gaming and decision-making sense. So our initial decision was to make this more mature game, but then our next decision was to hone that choice. We wanted something a little more realistic, a little grittier, than just having gore for gore's sake. While there's still magic - and that's not "real" - at the same time it's got themes of betrayal that you might not explore in a happier game. There's so much rich drama there, why should we back away from it? That ultimately made us challenge ourselves. We wanted to know if we could do it in a respectful and contextual way. We didn't want it to be the arbitrary inclusion of sex and violence; obviously people procreate and obviously people die in wars. I hope bio will pull that through, but I believe it when I see it.
Morgoth Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 I totally don't care about Dragon Age news anymore. I don't read previews, or watch new screenshots anymore, because I'm already 100% certain that I'll buy it. Rain makes everything better.

Monte Carlo Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Ok, I've looked at what we know about the NPCs and predictably my heart sinks when Dave says "I based this character on 'X' from Buffy. Buffy. FFS. So it's me, the Dog and the comedy dwarf. Was ever thus.

Buffy. FFS. So it's me, the Dog and the comedy dwarf. Was ever thus. Who's based on who in Buffy? And FYI Buffy is awesome, if you haven't seen it, don't dare say a single bad word about it.
Purkake Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Maybe you don't have any taste or a soul or maybe you just haven't seen it?
Monte Carlo Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Taste - Check Soul - Debatable Seen it? - Sadly, once or twice. Then again, it ain't aimed at me and I don't think Dragon Age is either.
Morgoth Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 I agree Buffy is the typical US kacke. Rain makes everything better.
Bos_hybrid Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Who's based on who in Buffy? Zevran and he's supposedly loosely based on Spike.
Purkake Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 (edited) Oh well. You're missing out, though. EDIT: Badass Spike or neutered Spike? Edited September 9, 2009 by Purkake
Oner Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 After Vampire the Masquerade and Hellsing (the manga), every other vampire story/setting just can't reach the bar. Purkake Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 (edited) Buffy is hardly a "vampire story". It's a comedy/drama that happens to have vampires along with robots, witches, demons of several varieties and whatever else you could imagine. Edited September 9, 2009 by Purkake
Bos_hybrid Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Oh well. EDIT: Badass Spike or neutered Spike? That was never made clear, but I'll have a guess at neutered.

I'm not seeing a bright future for a James Marsters-less Spike, but it will be funny to see what Bio did with it. Same, but I also think Mal(firefly) was mentioned in describing him or was that Alistair....
