Embarrassing question

I just wanted to mention that currently people seem to be developing games with the steam architecture in mind. EG, you HAVE to have steam to run these games (Anything from Valve, FEAR2, DOW2 are the major ones I can think of off the top of my head) and thus I believe that they won't shut down Steam for a long while because they don't want to anger the customers and loose a significant portion of their market.

When have they ever just shut down a server for a major company like that? People worry too much.

I posted two links few posts ago about MS and Sony shutting down their DRM servers, it would be not 1st time when obsolete bussiness was shot down when new one emerged to save money.

Except that those appeared to be in the Music sector rather than the games side of things. You present those and I reverse with Itunes (which is still going strong). The biggest thing about Music micro transactions is that people are putting them on their Ipods mainly, or their computer. The former can only get songs from Itunes (as far as I know, I wouldn't understand why it would take a competitors music) and the latter probably would just pirate the music anyway.

Games are different in that there isn't ONE set unit that is used primarily as your player. Instead all computers can use steam and thus have an ultimately larger market share than either of the servers you posted could probably hope to reach.

I remember Wall-mart shutting down part of its music servers, but that was because they were changing format and they gave plenty of advance notice so users could adapt to the new model. Didn't Sony and MSN run subscription services, where you access the whole music library for a flat monthly fee? It's not surprising that eventually that type of service would end and you would no longer have access to the songs. I'd be pretty sore if I bought individual songs.

But Steam is an entirely different business model, as Calax explained well.

Well, perhaps not.

I've never bought a whole big ol' game online before, and am considering doing it. I'm not as IT literate as you lot, so how does it work? Can I burn a copy so I actually have something tangible? What if the download is interrupted? Etc.

I've got a pretty vanilla wireless broadband internet connection - any issues there?

Please don't move this to the tech forum. It's scary, and full of people who talk in 1's and 0's.

Cheers

MC

Huh, I just decoded that. Imagine my surprise that binary somehow converts to text! Cool. :p

What, you need a translator to read binary? Weak.

I was a long wave radio operator in the army, we had to learn Morse. 80 signs per minute or something like that.. And since some signs can be up to five beeps long, that's an awful lot of beeps in one minute.

Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
