Kaftan Barlast Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I don't see Crysis graphics being surpassed for a long time, and it's going to be sad seeing games in 2010 still not looking as good as a game released in 2007 It's already been surpassed by Gears of War 2. It's art is much more striking than the ever boring jungle-military-camp stuff that Crysis displayed. The strength of CryEngine2 is the way it can render very large and good looking outdoor forrest areas, whereas Unreal3.x is unsurpassed when it comes to smaller indoor and streetlike levels. But U3 has outrun CryEngine2 a bit lately with its sweet cinematic effects, animation and physics system. Realtime ambient occlusion, can you even imagine just how friggin' cool that is? But ID Software's Tech5 is definently going to be a killer aswell, itll be able to render these huge and very detailed landscapes with no loading times at all. Not like FO3 for example, wher you can clearly see the game swapping between different LODs and stutter a bit as new content is loaded. *YAWN* EGO is where it's at! EGO smells. Calax Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 (edited) WoW, and Left 4 Dead. here's something weird, Fallout 2 Dungeon Siege 2 Heros of might and magic V and Boiling point (for windows XP) are all rated AO on Amazon. and that's just RPG's, just hitting the AO button for PC games brings up some REALLY interesting games that specifically say M on the box shown but are called adults only on amazon. WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Damn, combat is getting tough in PoP. Not because of less damage or more varied attacks or anything, but the game starts to focus on lots of quick time events for no good reason. "Alright, I've been thinking. Maria Caliban Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 (edited) i've really been trying to persevere with it, but something like 8 frickin hours of the same satyrs/maenads/jackelmen is getting really really frickin boring Amen and pass the rolls. I believe the art director of DIII said they wanted to place the player in a different environment every 15 minutes and show them something completely new every 45 minutes. EGO really is in my opinion the best of both worlds, as a framework to build upon, it's dynamic, and extremely modular, it also easy to use. In terms of technology, it's the best I have ever seen. I came up with Crate 3.0 technology. Crate 4.0 - we shall just have to wait and see.Down and out on the Solomani RimNow the Spinward Marches don't look so GRIM!
Hurlshort Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I rather liked the 'real world setting' (the Great Wall of China is surrounded by an impenetrable mountain range?!) and even as they mangled the mythology, they managed to convey the various cultures and religious philosophies well. Actually, there are sections of the Great Wall that are built on rather high mountain tops. It gives credence to the theories that the Wall really wasn't built only for defensive means.
Azure79 Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 I was the luckiest guy this Christmas as I scored a Wii and a PS3 from my girlfriend and family respectively. So naturally I've been playing some PS3 and Wii games. I played through Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and thoroughly enjoyed it. It felt like Tomb Raider done right, with some entertaining combat, characters that grew on you, simple yet entertaining puzzles, a fun story and great platforming(hardly no camera issues at all). Definitely worth the rental. I also went and played through Metal Gear Solid 4. I'm a pretty big fan of the series as it brings back fond memories of playing as Solid Snake on the NES. I also like the overly complicated, hard to follow and entirely too convoluted story that doesn't really seem to make much sense. Its over the top and preachy and there's pretty much nothing else like it. I was a little dissapointed in 4 though. It basically felt like MGS3 except prettier. The combat was clunky. The maps were pretty flat. Snake still can't jump. And the combat was really clunky. Gods, the combat is clunky. It may be that I'm not used to using controllers to aim in first person view, it seems to take forever for Snake to turn while aiming and I increased the sensitivity and turn rate to the max. Also why couldn't Kojima and team implement some kind of fluid cover system that would be handy while sneaking and combat? I understand that its primarily a stealth game, but there are parts where combat is unavoidable and Snake controls horribly. I felt myself missing the control options I had when I played Uncharted. A simple button press to press up against some cover. Another button press to lean or peak out from cover and another button to fire. Another quick button press to instantly jump to other available cover if I got flanked. MGS4 seemed a lot more cumbersome. But I did enjoy it. I found the stealth portions really fun like trying to using the octo-camo to completely blend in to the surroundings. Sneaking up on people and knocking them unconscious. Shooting them in the head with tranquilizer darts or rocket launcher while hidden... all good stuff. There was also a lot of stuff for people who played previous games and I felt good old nostalgia washing over me throughout the game. Also the last fight is awesome. Also great boss battles, especially the latter ones. It was frustrating then extremely fun figuring out how to fight some of the bosses. Overall a cool game that I'll most likely replay. I'll probably play some Force Unleashed if its ever in the rental store.
Slowtrain Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Just bought FO3 and STALKER:CS. Clear Sky was only 30 USD. Not quite the bargain bin I was hoping for, but close enough. It's supposed to snow all a lot this weekend so maybe I can get some gaming in. Unless the power goes out of course. WHich would suck. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.
Kaftan Barlast Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 I just had a racegasm from playing CTDP's Formula One 2006 mod for Rfactor http://www.ctdp.net/f1-2006.html I havent been this blown away by a game in.. I dont know, maybe ever. They're using this sweet physicsmod called RealFeel aswell that lets you feel every force and effect working on the car. Its amazing. WOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEHH!!!! this is what I look like playing this game... in my mind. Calax Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Played some left 4 dead with Tale. we got our heads handed to us 2 times before managing to finish the finale, and even then Tale (the token black guy ironically) got left behind because he was taken down at the bottom of the rescue ramp. Of course that run didn't get off to a good start because we got hit with a smoker hunter and tank within about 2 minutes right outside the safe zone. We also had a eastern european newbie who would do stupid stuff like get way apart from the group, or leave the house during the finale. He also didn't shut off his light around a witch. He also didn't shut off his light around a witch. He was German, he's in Munich. Said so earlier. He was doing that THE ENTIRE TIME! The very first map we were yelling at him to turn off the flashlight and he wouldn't do it. If my German were better maybe that would have had better luck. What was funniest about the guy is whenever he went down he'd start yelling "HELP ME, NOOBS!" I made my own share of mistakes in the game, of course. I startled a witch once because I didn't look around well enough before jumping into that field. And one of our failure times I jumped out of the house to try to rescue those two as they died when I should have just left them there. Sounds like the perfect time to put a bullet or two in him. Maybe next time he'll keep a better lookout. I just finished a game with Calax and Zombie Hunter (Deadly_Nightshade right?) that took us over 2 hours. We started out on expert, but dropped it down to Advanced after a couple failed attempts at the subway. We had a couple total party kills after that, but not many until we got to the finale where we died 3 or 4 times in a row. Mainly because we kept splitting up. "Guys! The closet!" "No! The little corner tower thingy!" "Damnit just pick a spot people!" *everyone goes their own way* Finally our 4th member quit out on us and somehow we did better without him. We made it through the first tank with no issues. By the time the second one arrived I was still being helped up by Calax. I quickly healed myself while the two of them fought the tank. Calax went down quickly because he was almost dead already and couldn't outrun the tank. Zombie was the next to be targeted, but I managed to run up behind the tank and crack him over the head with the butt of my assault rifle to lure him away before he could kill ZH. I helped up ZH, but I could see a hunter stalking me, I was sure that it was going to pounce before I could get ZH back on her (Zoey's) feet, but luckily it stayed away. I got boomered just after that happened. I'm not sure how ZH got up on the helipad, but I rifle butted my way to the end of the ramp and back up it with the green goo all over me. The helicopter came in to rescue us and I jumped in while ZH covered my escape. ZH actually went to jump into the copter but got literally snagged out of mid air by a smoker and was incapped before I could do anything so the copter took off with just me inside. Calax Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Did another left for dead game. Did some vs earlier today, and am now puzzleing out how I got the "Outbreak" achievement. Either a player/dev boomer puked on me, or I got puked on, pushed the guy back and then blew him up without him hitting the other members of my group. given I usually don't bash boomers (well maybe I did, it's hard to tell) I think it was a the former.
