EB Games

I went in to my local EB games in Gilroy, CA to pick up an Xbox360 game. Actually it's not my local store, but it is my favorite gaming store as the manager really knows a great deal about the latest PC games. Unfortunately he was not at the store this evening, and I was attended to by a salesperson named Andrew.

 

He rang me up, and I commented on how disappointing it was that the Xbox360 games were still selling for $60. He said that will not change anytime soon. I responded by saying that Nintendo64 games also sold very high when that system was first released. Rather than agreeing to disagree, he very rudely said "No, they were $50." I stated an example I remembered buying for $60, and again he responded with the same answer. I don't mind being disagreed with, but his tone was dripping with derision.

 

I was very close to simply returning my purchase simply because of his rude tone. I went home, not very happy. I decided to look up on the internet what the prices really were. I figured maybe I was wrong. It wouldn't excuse his attitude towards me, but it's nice to know. I found numerous mentions on the internet to back up my claim. So I called the store and asked to speak with Andrew. I explained to him that I had looked up the answer on the internet. He hung up very quickly.

 

It seemed like pretty bad customer service. This game I just bought can easily be found at the Best Buy next door, and I'm still a bit tempted to return it, but I figure that means little to someone who makes no commision. So I felt that he should be reported, not necessarily for being ill-informed about gaming history, but for being ill-mannered towards a regular customer. I sent this entire write up into their reporting software.

 

Anyways, felt I should share my lousy experience with y'all. Oh, the game I bought was Crackdown.

I refuse to shop at Gamestop/EB. And you are right about N64 games. I remember the predecessor to those stores, Funcoland, trying to pawn off a used Mario Kart 64 for $80 on me, because of the high demand.

I remember Star Wars Rogue Squadron for the 64 being approx. $80 up here in Canada back then. I have an EB near me that I will go to on occasion because like you I know the one manager and he's an awesome guy. He's responsible for the PC games section at that store not being any smaller than it already is. About half of the employees at the store currently are actually quite knowledgeable about the games they sell and are generally nice people. There are a few though that aren't so hot. On top of that they actually have a Wii set up that you can play! The EB at the mall has one setup, but you have to leave your credit card and driver's license with the guy at the desk before they give you the remote. <_<

I can find really good deals and marked down prices at CompUSA or Best Buy. They have a wider selection of PC games too. The CompUSA near my location always has Manager's Specials where I can snag good games for cheap.

Its a shame really. I used to buy all of my games there. They had wall to wall pc games, collectors editions, and other goodies. Now they ain't ****. Best Buy is my friend.

I used to go because it felt like I was helping the game industry shopping as game speciality shops. Then, it became too often me coming in, them asking if I had a pre-order, me saying no, them saying too bad. So, I went to Best Buy where they would have a stack of the game. Eventually I just cut out the extra steps.

 

Then there was that whole "trying to sell me already opened games as new" thing they did 2 or 3 times.

I've bought three games in EB games this life (Victoria: An Empire under the Sun, Tombraider Legends and NWN2)... and that only because the other game pusher (like, the good guys where I bought my BG2 boxed set on dvd and stuff) in town closed shop :'(

 

I just hate having to climb mountains of school bags and kids dragging their ignorant parents around to see if they have anything worthy getting out the credit card for. Which they don't most of the time

You realize that almost everyone thats on posted here has done all of these except #4 at least once even if they never set foot in the store?

I never get that angry with folks like that. On the rare exception, I'm not talking to the employee anymore. I'm talking to the boss. Still, he was just a yutz. That's just how it is. Some folks are like that. The next time I went into the store, I would probably ignore the guy. Maybe, just maybe, I might mention it to him when the prices drop on 360 games. Even then, I'd probably not even mention it. In fact, I'd likely avoid the subject altogether because I know, having been that yutz once or twice in my life, he's feeling pretty damned stupid for acting how he did in the first place. Of course, I usually try charm first thing, so we'd probably have been laughing over the game industry and the nature of consoles. :Cant's tongue in cheek grin icon:

 

Oh, and EB and Gamestop are not only overpriced, but often unfriendly. I almost always order online. The internet is NEVER rude to me. hahahahaha

Dude when I buy a game. I get it, and get the hell out as fast as I can. People are generally retarded so I can't be wasting my time talking to some chump who makes 6 dollars an hour who for the most part thinks he actually has some kind of knowledge of any subject relating to anything. Not to mention I must have d*** stamped on my face because people rarely ever try to start small talk with me even though I'm always polite saying thank you and such. But w/e I guess I'm just a bitter schmuck.

I carry a CD marked 'Porn' in all my vehicles for maggots like this. It actually has Darik's Nukem <something or another> on it. It is an self-executing ISO file that when dropped into a drive, sends an F-Disk command to all recognisable drives. When treated exeedingly poorly by some jerk-off, I wonder off. Said J-O finds the CD marked 'Porn' that was conveniently left behind and drops it into his system ( after looking over his shoulder of course! ) and then screams when all his company drives get reformatted. Slack-jawed, wingless, dung-eating offspring of flies deserve this sort of thing.

Still, he was just a yutz. That's just how it is. Some folks are like that.

All the more reason to make sure that he's eating out of a dumpster the next day for being a 'yutz'. I see more and more of these morons having a job simply because they have a pulse and, like any organ-grinding monkey, they can punch buttons.

 

Employment standards have definitely taken a downward turn.

Similar...I went there a lot largely because they were the best option close to home, w/the most games. I don't personally have anything against their service; I usually run in and out so fast, without talking, I never notice. Most of the guys in the one by our house were polite enough, but again, I don't talk much when I buy, so...The past few years, since I don't have a console to buy for, they've lost my interest completely.

 

I go to Fry's these days even tho it's a further drive and more hassle overall. Best Buy is ok, but the ones close to us don't have a lot of games either - their DVD section is pretty big tho, and we bought our TV there.

I think somewhere I lost the notion that customer service during the buying process should be good in most retail cases. As long as they're polite when I get to the counter (which it sounds like the guy definitely wasn't in Hurlshot's case) and respect my "go away I don't need help right now" responses I'm cool. It is different when I actually have a problem w/the merchandise tho - that's when I want the better service.

The stores around here generally suck. Best Buy is the better of them all. If I really need something, I'll get it from Amazon.

I still go to EB on a regular basis.

 

They sell used games in better shape than video rental stores(I'm looking at you Blockbuster!) and they often have specials that are well worth the visit, which Best Buy doesn't have.

I never really pay any attention to clerks. I'm always polite but for me, their only purpose is to exchange a product for money and the very rare "do you have X product in the back by any chance?"

 

I used to go to Compucenter here as well but everything is overpriced. I don't know how or why they're still in business. Greatest Hits PS2 games are sold 39.99$ there instead of 29.99$.

 

Go figure.

We have Gamestop here in Ames and I go there all the time. A good chunk of them are not just console/computer gamers but also PnPers and we discuss all sorts of games. They are good people. They also allow me to return "defective" PC games after I open and installed them, realizing that they are crap, in which I return them for my money back or for a new game.
