Magena
Did anyone else see this on G4? I hadn't realized what the history was of sex in games... or for that matter how much sex really has been in games.
EnderAndrew
There is sex on the Simpsons and no one cares, but we should care there is sex in video games? Every music video on MTV is about sex. Magena
One thing that they talked about in the show is that there is sex in movies and that is acceptable, but it isn't in computer games. They also went on to talk about if the rating system was acceptable. - and it was pointed out that "not for children" is listed on GTA -- also that the people who are up in arms about GTA:SA should have started making noise when it was realized in GTA that you could hire a prostitute, then beat her up and get your money back. EnderAndrew
The game got a Mature rating, which means you should be 17 to play it. If you are 17 you can see Sin City, but you can't play GTA:SA?

If you are 17 you can see Sin City, but you can't play GTA:SA? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No. I don't actually think that was the argument... close, but it had more to do with the fact that although there is a rating system in place, the stores that sell the games apparently aren't responsible for implementing the system. - When I worked in a game store, we always carded, and if it looked like a parent was picking up the game, we let them know what they were actually picking up instead of leaving it to the kids to tell their parents how great the game is, and how much they needed it. The bottom line was if the game industry should be regulated from within or from outside. It was interesting to see how far Leisure Suit Larry has gone from his initial game to the latest. Magena
Sex sells. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Always! I still think it is funny that we can blow people up and that is ok, but introduce phsyical contact in a suggestive way, and ya'd think people were going to die from being blinded. - of course, most of the people I see doing this I know have had sex, because they have children. Lucius
I second that, blowing people up, committing genocide and what not is just friggin fine, but showing a little skin (ok, maybe a bit more than that) is DAMAGING, it's a NONO!. I don't know if people obey rules of censor and ratings in the UK/US, but here nothing is censored, nor rated as such, except for a few cinema flicks which noone cares to check up on anyhow. DENMARK! It appears that I have not yet found a sig to replace the one about me not being banned... interesting.

Child of Flame
HAWT! But in all seriousness, the new Sketcher's ads are worse than anything I've ever seen in a videogame (Hentai excluded, though I haven't played those, just read the SA reviews ). Child of Flame
I don't think so. Basically: Scantily clad lady in catsuit looking string bikini, straddling adonis looking male, grinding her crotch on his and embracing. That's pretty extreme as American ads go. Guest Fishboot
Sex sells. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Does it really, though? AFAIK games that trade on strong sexualization like Bloodrayne or whatever that non-Al Lowe LSL game was called didn't fly off the shelves. I think sex doesn't really sell video games in a conventional sense. That article that someone posted went on about the sexualized Dark Elves in WoW, but really I barely noticed when I played - the game wasn't wall to wall with people stripping down and doing dance emotes, and in fact I think that kind of thing was stigmatized as infantile (insofar as anything can be infantile on an MMORPG scale). Some people want to keep their amusement and their pornography as polar opposites, and don't ken socially acceptable erotica. And I think a Venn diagram would show that a lot of those people are gamers. Call it puritanism if you like.
Kaftan Barlast
That sex sells is one of the biggest myths of our society, it is completely false. As Fishboot says, noone will buy a game just because it has voluptuous women on the cover or in it. It is of course true of all types of products and advertising. I have to admit I look a little longer at an ad that has a gorgeous woman on it but it doesnt in the least make me want to purchase the product. In fact, Ive learnt to automaticly ignore advertising. Its just background noise. And of course we have exhibit A- the sales figures of such excellent movies as "Barb Wire" or those other quality films Ive since long ereased from my memory :D DISCLAIMER: Do not take what I write seriously unless it is clearly and in no uncertain terms, declared by me to be meant in a serious and non-humoristic manner. metadigital
There is sex on the Simpsons and no one cares, but we should care there is sex in video games? Every music video on MTV is about sex. We market 15 year old girls are sex symbols. People are just hyprocritical when it comes to sex. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This is so true. Turn on a music broadcast station; if it's playing a rap album there will be young women gleefully portraying submissive sexual acts and objectifying themselves with the message that women are shallow and will give favours commensurate with the material reward given ... ... And people are on a crusade against games? I agree that video games seem to be the fixation for this generation ("X", or is it the Baby-boomers in control of the media "talkback" and "opinion polls") who are now hypocritically in total-puritanical mode. This is the current parents love-to-hate teenage trend: like rap and even Elvis before. It'll blow over, but not before some people's reputations are shot. Cathryn
I can't stand G4 so I don't know anything specifically about that show, but I think that Wal-Mart won't carry video games with strong sexual content and that has a lot to do with how far games take sexual themes. I read that companies are trying now to corner the 'elusive' female gamer market, and given what the men making video games seem think women want to see, this may be bad (The Sims...ugh). The only thing I personally find offensive is the idea that I'm supposed to be offended by a certain type of content. Slap a warning sticker on it and let me choose whether or not I want to see it, thanks. That article about avatars was amusing. I laugh when people talk about how over-sexualized female avatars in every video game are...the male ones are just as overdone!
Child of Flame
Well yeah Cathryn, but the male ones are missing the critical element to make them over sexualized. The boobs. There can be no over sexualization, or nay, even any attractiveness without boobs. Moobs? Perish the thought. This message brought to you courtesy of Zap Brannigan.
