see, the thing is, just as kp's history is wonky, most americans don't know what is fascism, or communism or even socialism. is a fail o' education which is gonna require decades to fix. fascism is bad, every american knows that. so if Bob is an avid fox viewer and tucker carlson is telling him 'bout the benefits o' testicle tanning, the righteousness o' a war on wokeism and how fantasmagorical is orban's hungary, then maybe Bob is less able to recognize the warning signs o' fascism, yes?

as is so often the case, the solution starts with education. 'course the hard right conservatives is the folks fighting tooth and nail in local school boards across the country to change how kids is being taught. unlike most western nations, local level politics is far more relevant when it comes to education, which is why southerner history textbooks will baffle a minnesota or illinois reader.

HA! Good Fun!

While Umberto Eco's Ur-fascism concept is often used as the starting point in recognising fascism, I would go further in recommending Roger Griffin's <<The Nature of Fascism>>, in which the term he uses to describe it, "palingenetic ultranationalism," probably does a better job in elaborating how uniquely dangerous fascism is even in comparison to run-of-the-mill populist far-right (and sometimes ethno-nationalist) regimes of Orban's Hungary and Putin's Russia.

“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

-Jonathan Littell <<Les Bienveillantes>>
Quote

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

given the pervasive but understandable ignorance regarding the history and attributes o' fascism, there is a tendency to misuse the term. being a racist redneck don't necessarily make a person a fascist. likewise, so-called libertarians and far right conservatives screaming, "fascist," whenever oppressive laws such as mask-mandates-during-a-pandemic is enacted fails for being similar misguided. here in the US, all too often people believe fascism were initially a uniquely european problem which contributed to ww2 and then took hold amongst white nationalists in the US in the 50s. is disturbing rare to encounter people with more than the most cursory grasp o' fascism beyond a certainty that nazis deserve the fascism appellation.

Supposedly tomorrow is the deadline for the Serbs to remove the roadblocks in to Kosovska Mitrovica. The ultimatum was given by some western Ambassador, otherwise the Albanian militia will remove them by force. On the other side Serbia is deploying long range artillery and prepping the army.

So the Serbs will lift the barricades after a promise from the west to not allow "Kosovo" (Albanian) security forces to go in to north. The big issue is the definition, meaning the Western interpretation where Security Forces = Military or the Serbian definition where Security forces = Heavily armed personnel... Not very optimistic.

What's the root of this new conflict/escalation? Old grievances? I believe that I've said before that I don't know much about the old war that isn't basic Wikipedia. Trying to recall anything about it from when it was actually going on but I think it was presented to us as super straightforward good guys vs bad guys but I didn't follow politics or world events as a kid and now that I'm older I know things are almost never so clear cut.

The Albanians want complete control and to expel the Serbian population from the north like they did everywhere else. The Serbian population in the north wants autonomy. There was an agreement reached (Brussels agreement) where the EU was the guarantor and since then the Serbian side has honored all points in it while the Albanian side refused to honor any of their obligation, this causes a lot of friction since the Albanians want more and the Serbs don't want to budge until they get their part of the agreement.

There is always that, going back to the Ottoman empire and the First and Second WW and to the more resent history.

Ignoring any of the information you would get from either side, you can take a look at the demographic map before 1990 and after 2000. That should tell you how straight forward it is...

Out of curiosity, what exactly is it that Bolsonaro has done for those people? Did he actually improve their lives or did he just do the usual "x is bad"-shtick while destroying the amazonas?

Basically, he is right wing, conservative and claims to fight against the left's corruption. So these people flock to him.

I don't like Lula and his corrupt friends (that are all back in power as his ministers) but that doesn't make me feel any sympathy to Bolsonaro and his despicable family. So perhaps these people are also stupid.

At least now we have someone concerned with the environment as the Minister of the Environment.
