am not knowing but am suspecting near all chinese satellites is known quantities and US and allies is aware to the second when they will be passing over ___________ or ___________.  the chinese balloons obvious move slower, but is also gonna be more difficult to predict days, weeks and months ahead when and exact where such is gonna be in part 'cause weather baffles even the best soopercomputer models.

Thats a good point. I think I was figuring the satellites are in geosynchronous orbit so they were always hovering above the US, but youre probably right.

fyi, geosynchronous is a misunderstood term. geosynchronous involves an orbit period o' one day and is necessarily at 42 thousand  kilometers from the earth center, or almost 35 thousand km above the earth. geosynchronous is not necessarily gonna remain at a fixed point above the earth unless the satellite is located above the equator which results in geostationary.

example picture o' a geosynchronous orbit path.

1-s2.0-S0094576517307166-gr1.jpg

am suspecting the bigger hurdle for a geosynchronous spy satellite meant to provide useful image data is the +22 thousand miles distant from the surface o' the earth the satellite needs be.  twenty-two thousand miles is a serious distance with all kinda atmospheric interference 'tween the satellite and the target.

again, am talking w/o any real knowledge whatsoever 'bout spy satellites, but am understanding a bit o' the physics and thinking distances for geosynchronous is way beyond the range o' useful images which could be collected. hundreds o' miles? yeah, sure, but 22k miles?

HA! Good Fun!

Even LEO satellites hit a resolution wall. IIRC that's with using 'tricks' like interferometry as well. It's a pretty good resolution limit but you can still get better with something closer that also doesn't have to go through so much atmosphere. That just tends to be less convenient and more prone to being shot down/ being seen as a potential act of war. The other factor is that atmosphere can scatter and absorb some EM emissions, and they tend to weaken exponentially. Being a tenth the distance in a balloon (or drone) --> 100x the signal power if I remember my 6th form physics correctly.

I feel confident that China's reconnaissance satellites have the resolution to watch me type this post. If theyre using balloons as their primary then theyve already lost the next two wars. But I cant think of any reason why they would use this method. We will never find out but I would love to know what the U2 snooped. Bet they werent expecting that!

I didnt realize it but spy balloons do have certain advantages over satellites used for spying. This link highlights it

So local SA political drama, last night was our SONA (state of the nation address ) and the EFF, Economic Freedom Fighters,  tried to storm the stage and they got thrown out. It was classic and even though irritating what the EFF tried to do it provided much entertainment. The EFF are our anti-white, "socialist ",  far  left  revolutionary party and the funniest thing about this was their leader ranting and raving on the street outside while SONA continued

the train derailment were big news... on fox and friends. somehow the accident and the cleanup efforts were all the fault o' pete buttigieg.

other than fox, the accident were covered national and were a top story at cnn and npr when we checked yesterday. can't speak for other sources as we didn't check save for the washington post with didn't give it much attention.

the lack of fatalities (unless you count fish) reduced the impact of the story in a 24/7 news cycle. there was a mass shooting at msu yesterday and following the chinese balloon incident, people are inordinate interested in ufo sightings, particular when the US military is shooting at such objects over kanada .

the indefinite long-term consequences o' the train crash also make it difficult to report useful and lurid info which titillates as the dangers, particular after evacuations, is less immediate life-threatening and more you might die of cancer at some point in the future, maybe

I more surprised they shot a Sidewinder at a balloon, but not that one missed.

Well, cannons might not be effective. RCAF dumped a lot of rounds into one once  and it didn't work.  https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/weather-balloon-canada-china-1.6737831

Sidewinder is just the cost effective example, I guess

am realizing the tounge-in-cheek, but snoopy in a sopwith camel is unlikely to be able to reach anywhere near the 60k feet the chinese balloons were encountered. would be shocked if the camel could exceed 20k feet.

more important, your post gives us an excuse to link the following:
